The 2020 model year changed the Super Duty twice over. The fourth-generation aluminum-body truck got its mid-cycle refresh, and the 6.7L Powerstroke became a third-generation engine. Ford strengthened the block and head castings, switched to forged steel pistons that drop compression from 16.2:1 to 15.8:1, fitted a new crank and rods, and raised injection pressure to 36,000 psi with eight-event piezo injectors. Pickups make 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft. Chassis cabs share the engine at 330 hp and 825 lb-ft with their own turbo and calibration. The lift pump moved into the fuel tank, and the 6-speed 6R140 gave way to the 10R140 10-speed on MERCON ULV fluid.
The layout matters when you shop. The heads are reverse-flow, so the variable-geometry turbo sits in the valley between the banks and doubles as the exhaust brake. Boosted air runs through plastic charge pipes and rubber couplers into an air-to-water intercooler. That intercooler lives on a separate low-temperature coolant loop with the EGR cooler, fuel cooler and transmission cooler, so this engine has two cooling systems to service, not one. Exhaust leaves the turbo for the factory oxidation catalyst, particulate filter and SCR catalyst with DEF dosing.
What fails and why
The CP4.2 pump. This is the known weak point of the platform. Ford recall 24S78 (NHTSA 24V957000) covers 2020-2022 Super Duty diesels because biodiesel deposits can form on the pump's roller components and lead to pump failure. The dealer remedy is PCM and TCM software. When a CP4 does fail, it can contaminate the whole fuel system: injectors, both rails, high-pressure and return lines, the tank and the sending unit. Warning signs include extended cranking, reduced power and rail pressure codes such as P0087 or P0191. Metal flakes in a fuel filter mean stop driving. Water and debris are the other pump killers, because the CP4 is lubricated by the fuel it moves.
Boost leaks and cracked charge pipes. Leaks at the charge-pipe couplers and cracked factory pipes show up on every 6.7L year. Listen for a hiss under boost, look for oily residue at the couplers, and expect low power, high EGTs or a P0299 underboost code. A plastic pipe that ruptures under high boost makes a loud whoosh and drops the truck into limp mode. Oil mist from the crankcase ventilation also coats the inside of the intercooler and cold-side pipe as the miles add up.
Exhaust manifolds. Heat cycling cracks manifolds and loosens hardware on all 6.7L years, especially on high-mileage and hard-towing trucks. The signs are a tick on a cold start that quiets as the engine warms, soot trails at the flanges, slower spool and a burnt smell.
Heat under tow. Coolant leaks at the radiator, hoses, water pump and fittings grow with miles and towing hours. If the temperature climbs only on grades or with a trailer behind you, the usual cause is a plugged cooling stack, restricted airflow or a worn fan clutch. Because the intercooler and EGR cooler share the secondary loop, low coolant there shows up as high intake air temps and EGR temperature codes before the engine ever overheats.
Early 10R140s. Certain 2020 trucks were covered by two transmission recalls: a torque converter damper plate that may fracture and stall the engine (20V365000), and a washer inside the 10R140 that can break up and lodge debris in the Park mechanism (22V256000). TSB 21-2420 covers harsh or delayed shifts on some 2020 trucks from sticking valve body valves. Heat is the big enemy under heavy towing, and Next Gen Diesel estimates 100,000-150,000 miles before major work on an unmodified 10R140, sooner with big tires or heavy towing.
Short trips and idle time. Trucks that idle a lot or rarely see the highway have their own list. DPF regeneration injects extra fuel that can wash past the rings and raise the oil level on the dipstick, interrupted regens bring DPF-load warnings, and soot can stick the turbo's VGT vanes, which shows up as sluggish spool and VGT position codes. Bostech calls turbo failures on 2020-and-up trucks rare when they are maintained properly.
Check your VIN. Beyond the fuel pump, recalls on these years cover the steering column upper shaft on certain 2020-2021 trucks (25V626000), the Dana M275 rear axle housing on certain 2020-2021 F-350s (21V536000) and integrated trailer brake controller software on 2021-2022 trucks (22V193000). Run your VIN before you chase any of those symptoms with parts.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Ford already did the heavy lifting for 2020 with steel pistons, a 36,000 psi fuel system and 475 hp from the factory, so on this truck most of your money is best spent on protection and durability. Fix the air side first: upgraded charge pipes, couplers and clamps keep boost in the system without touching the turbo. On the fuel side there are three levels. The baseline is OE-style filter service on schedule or earlier, with regular water-separator drains. The next step adds filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4 with a lift pump system or an engine-mounted filter assembly. The hardware answer is either an S&S Disaster Prevention Kit, which feeds the pump case clean fuel and filters its return before it goes back to the tank, or an S&S DCR conversion that replaces the CP4.2 outright.
For cracked manifolds, a heavier replacement casting with thicker walls and flanges is the durable fix. A DPF-back exhaust keeps every piece of factory aftertreatment in place; MBRP states its 4-inch DPF-back for 2017-2026 6.7L trucks does not affect emissions and needs no programming. For the 10R140, start with MERCON ULV and an FT-221 filter on the severe schedule if you tow; Next Gen Diesel ranks a valve body upgrade as the most important hardware change, followed by a deep cast-aluminum pan that adds more than a gallon of fluid. If you add an intake or intercooler part, look for a CARB Executive Order number that covers your exact truck and model year.

Fitment notes
Watch the year splits and the options that look alike from the outside.
- 2020 is a hard break from 2017-2019. The 2020-2022 trucks have the lift pump in the tank, the 10R140 on MERCON ULV, and revised pistons, rods, crank, block and heads. Lift pump, tank and sending-unit parts, transmission pans, filters, coolers and fluid, and long blocks or head castings do not cross back to 2017-2019. Intake kits are split at 2020 as well.
- 2023 is a new truck. The fifth-generation Super Duty has a new body and interior, and the 2023-and-up High-Output engine uses stainless manifolds and a different turbo, so 2020-2022 manifolds, up-pipes and long blocks are standard-output parts. Parts sold as 2017-2026 fitments, such as DPF-back exhausts and charge pipes, generally carry over.
- Pickup or chassis cab. Chassis cabs share the engine but use their own calibration and turbo (LC4Z-6K682-A versus the pickup's LC3Z-6K682-A). Engine assemblies and turbos are VIN-specific.
- 2WD or 4x4, SRW or DRW. 4x4 trucks run a Dana Super 60 solid front axle and 2WD trucks use Twin I-Beam, so front axle, hub and steering parts never cross, and most lift and leveling kits are 4x4 only. Confirm single or dual rear wheels on an F-350, and never put F-250/F-350 brake parts on an F-450.
- Tremor trucks. The Tremor package already sits 2 inches higher up front, so a lift kit will not gain its full rated height over stock on a Tremor.
- Rear axle by cover. A 12-bolt cover is the Sterling 10.5 and a 14-bolt cover is the Dana M275. An F-250 can have either depending on the tow package, so count the bolts before you order a differential cover or gears.
- Hitches and air springs. Bed liners cannot go back in once the factory 5th-wheel/gooseneck crossmember is installed. Receivers are 2.5-inch on a base F-250 and 3-inch with a reducer on tow-package and diesel F-350 and dually trucks, so match the ball mount. Some air spring kits do not work with every under-bed hitch; Air Lift's LoadLifter 5000 excludes Una-Goose.
- Filters, tanks and cab size. Ford fuel filter numbers have superseded, so match filters to your VIN, not the year alone. Body mount kits, fuel tanks and some exhaust are specific to cab and bed length.
Frequently asked questions
Is my 2020-2022 F-250 or F-350 covered by the CP4 pump recall?
Ford recall 24S78 (NHTSA 24V957000) covers 2020-2022 F-250 through F-600 Super Duty diesels for biodiesel deposits that can form on the CP4.2's roller components. The remedy is PCM and TCM software at the dealer, not a new pump. Recall 26V158000 (Ford 26S17) re-covers trucks that were repaired incorrectly, so run your VIN even if the first recall shows as done.
How do I protect the CP4.2 beyond the recall?
Keep the fuel clean and dry. Change fuel filters on schedule or sooner, drain the water separator regularly, and consider added filtration and water separation ahead of the pump. A lubricity additive such as Hot Shot's Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment restores lubricity to ultra-low-sulfur diesel, which matters because the CP4 is lubricated by fuel. The hardware options are the S&S Disaster Prevention Kit and the S&S DCR pump conversion.
Will parts for a 2017-2019 Super Duty fit my 2020-2022 truck?
Some do and many do not. The body carries over, but 2020 brought the 10R140 in place of the 6R140, an in-tank lift pump, a revised engine and new intake kits, so transmission, lift pump, engine internals and intake parts are year-specific. Parts listed as 2017-2026, like DPF-back exhausts and charge pipes, generally fit both. Check the year span in each product title, or call and we will check it by VIN.
Why does my 6.7L run hot only when I tow?
That pattern usually points to a plugged cooling stack, restricted airflow or a worn fan clutch. Clean the bugs and debris out from between the intercooler heat exchanger, condenser and radiator and check the fan clutch before you buy anything. If intake air temps run high with EGR temperature codes but the engine itself does not overheat, look at the secondary coolant loop. It has its own degas bottle, and Ford calls for Motorcraft Yellow coolant on 2020-and-up trucks.
What oil does the 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke take?
Ford's spec is WSS-M2C171-F1 10W-30, or 5W-40 for severe duty, with 13 quarts and a Motorcraft FL-2051S filter, changed at 5,000 miles on the severe schedule or when the oil-life monitor calls for it. Whatever brand you pour in, confirm the bottle lists the Ford spec. Short-trip trucks should also watch the dipstick, because regen fuel can raise the oil level.
