2015-2016 Chevy Duramax LML Parts & Upgrades

Parts for the 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD with the 6.6L Duramax LML. The truck is what changed in 2015, not the engine: the HD line moved to the K2XX cab and bed while the LML and Allison 1000 carried over at 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. The one thing to know about this truck is its Bosch CP4.2 injection pump.

The LML Duramax in the 2015-2016 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD

The LML is the last of the 6.6L Duramax V8s: a deep-skirt cast-iron block with cross-bolted main caps and Isuzu-cast aluminum four-valve heads. Bosch common-rail injection runs up to about 30,000 psi through eight piezoelectric injectors, and a ninth injector in the downpipe raises exhaust temperature so the particulate filter can regenerate, roughly every 600 to 700 miles in steady driving. A single water-cooled Garrett GT3788VA variable-vane turbo sits in the engine valley and doubles as the exhaust brake. Behind it is the Allison 1000 six-speed, the only transmission the LML was offered with, rated at 765 lb-ft of input torque. Every Duramax HD got a 3.73 rear axle and the Eaton G80 locking differential. Output was 397 hp at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm in both years, across WT, LT, LTZ and the High Country that joined the HD line for 2015. What changed for 2015 was the body: the K2XX cab with inlaid doors, a forward-hinged Double Cab replacing the old extended cab, roll-formed beds with CornerStep bumpers, and a larger front bumper opening for the intercooler and radiators. 2016 brought Digital Steering Assist on Crew Cab and Double Cab diesels, a factory fifth-wheel and gooseneck prep package, and SAE J2807 tow ratings. It was also the last LML year.

What fails and why

The CP4.2 is the headline. It is lubricated only by diesel, flows about 20 percent less than the CP3 it replaced, and scuffs at the cam and roller interface when the fuel film thins from water, air or low-lubricity fuel. The debris then seeds the rails, lines and all eight injectors, which is why the repair is never just a pump. Diesel Power Products reports it on roughly 5 to 10 percent of LMLs, documented as early as 30,000 miles and averaging near 100,000, while some pumps pass 700,000. The warning is short: slight power loss, a fuel-filter-change notification, or P0087, P0088, P0191 or P128E, then extended crank and a no-start. A fuel level sending unit that reads the tank high and a flexible supply line near the brake booster that can kink both help the pump find air. The gold multi-layer-steel head gaskets fail unpredictably, and overheating is the number one cause: Schultz Diesel has replaced them at 50,000 km on a stock truck and seen others go past 650,000 km. That is why the cooling side carries so much weight here, from water pump seals around 100,000 miles and radiator seam leaks reported on 2015 trucks to a debris-packed cooling stack and fouled dual EGR coolers on a high-mileage tow rig. The turbo's vanes stick with soot and the actuator can fail, and PCV oil coats the compressor, intercooler and boots until a softened boot slips under boost. On the Allison, the factory converter's thin stator and soft front cover come first, then heat-soaked clutch packs on trucks that pull grades. On the aftertreatment side, the DEF tank heater is the most common DEF repair and both NOx sensors drift as urea precipitate builds. Owners commonly report highway wander near 100,000 miles, and it is usually linkage wear rather than an alignment problem.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

On a stock-power truck, factory-grade parts are usually the right call. Schultz Diesel's position is that the factory head bolts are adequate and that a healthy cooling system protects gaskets better than studs do; ARP studs make sense when the heads are already off a towed or tuned truck, and it is worth checking clearance at the lower valve cover corner nearest the firewall. The fuel-side protections are a frame-mounted lift pump (FASS Titanium Signature units come preset to 8 to 10 psi with 2-micron filtration and air separation), a kit that screens or redirects the pump's case flow so a failure does not reach the injectors, a lubricity additive at every fill, and a CARB Executive Order CP3 conversion where one is available, since the bolt-on EO versions need no ECM tuning. Cooling upgrades are a thicker-core aluminum radiator and a 180-degree thermostat kit, but only after the stack has been cleaned and the system pressure-tested. For towing, the Allison answers are a triple-disc converter with a billet steel cover, a deep pan with filter, an auxiliary cooler, and a flushed and flow-tested cooler circuit. For power, Calibrated Power's EZ Lynk ECM and TCM package holds CARB EO D-845 with five files, from Optimized Stock up to Sport at +135 rwhp and +243 lb-ft, and it runs only with every factory emissions component in place. A leak-free stock turbo on that calibration is roughly a 500 rwhp truck; past that the 11.2 mm turbine vanes are the restriction, and prolonged wide-open throttle with added power is what burns factory converters and clutches.

Fitment notes

Verify by VIN and RPO. For engine parts the engine code is the key, not the body year: 2017 and later L5P trucks share the K2XX cab but not the injection system, intake plumbing, sensors or electronics, and the lower-output LGH van engine shares the LML architecture at 335 hp, so confirm LML versus LGH on long blocks, injectors and turbos. Going backward, the 2015-2016 engine is mechanically the 2011 design, so most engine-bay parts cross to 2011-2014 trucks, but the front fascia and bumper opening changed in 2015, which makes radiators, intercoolers and bumper-mounted pieces body-year specific. Do not assume 2006-2010 LBZ or LMM cold-side, Y-bridge or intercooler pipe kits fit either; the 2011-2016 charge-air layout is its own. Chassis parts are looser: steering linkage, the 14-inch Duralife rotors and the 8 x 180 mm wheel pattern are catalogued across 2011-2019 HD regardless of engine, while 2001-2010 HD wheels do not fit at all. Exhaust length and exit change with cab, bed and single versus dual rear wheel. Gooseneck kits split by year: B&W's GNRK1012 is listed for 2011-2015 with a 30,000 lb gross trailer rating, 2016-2019 trucks take the GNRK1016, and a truck with the factory gooseneck prep package needs the puck-compatible kit. Check the axle tag for a 10.5-inch or 11.5-inch ring gear before ordering a differential cover or gear set, confirm single or dual alternator before buying an alternator or belt, and confirm whether yours is a 2015 or 2016 ECM before ordering a calibration.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace the CP4.2 before it fails?

That is a judgment call and we will talk it through with you. The case for acting early is that a pump failure contaminates the rails, lines and all eight injectors, so the bill is far bigger than the pump itself. The cheaper middle ground is a lift pump with 2-micron filtration and air separation, a case-flow or inlet-screen protection kit, and a lubricity additive at every fill. If you do convert, use a CARB EO-numbered CP3 kit on a road-driven truck, and inspect every filter you pull for metal.

Why is my Silverado counting down to a speed limit over DEF?

The LML watches DEF quality, level and pressure with two NOx sensors and a heated tank, and a fault in any of them starts a derate countdown. The tank heater is the single most common DEF repair on these engines, followed by NOx sensors that drift as urea precipitate builds, and reductant pump or injector faults; one source reports pumps failing from 30,000 to 50,000 miles, though it varies a lot. Fresh fluid from a high-turnover supplier and keeping the 5.3-gallon tank stocked is the cheapest prevention there is.

Will 2011-2014 LML parts fit my 2015?

Engine, fuel and transmission parts generally do, because the LML and the Allison carried over unchanged into the new body. Body and front-end parts generally do not: 2015 brought a different cab, doors, rockers, fascia and bumper opening, so running boards, flares, bumpers and lighting are 2015-2019 pieces. Suspension kits are usually catalogued 2011-2019 and do fit, but verify bumper and body clearance before you order.

How much power will a stock LML and Allison take?

The published roadblocks are the CP4.2's lower flow and the turbo's 11.2 mm turbine vanes, which together put a leak-free stock truck on a compliant calibration near 500 rwhp. The 2011-2016 Allison converter's stronger one-way clutch lets a stock unit tolerate a little over 500 rwhp, but the transmission generally wants upgrades somewhere past 450. The bottom end is credited with holding about 700 rwhp, so the fuel and air sides run out long before the block does.

My water pump leaked again right after it was replaced. What now?

Repeat water pump failures usually mean something is pushing pressure past the surge tank cap, which GM TechLink rates at 15 to 16 psi. The suspects are a failed EGR cooler, a head gasket leaking internally, or a bad cap. We pressure-test the system and check for combustion gases in the coolant before putting a third pump in, and we fill through the surge tank because there is no radiator cap or petcock on this engine.
