Call or Text (352) 722-5295The engine in the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Your truck runs the third-generation 6.7L Powerstroke. It is a 6.7-liter (406 ci) pushrod V8 with a 3.897-inch bore and a 4.251-inch stroke, a compacted graphite iron block, aluminum heads and 32 valves. The heads are reverse-flow, with the exhaust in the valley, and each cylinder is held down by six head bolts. For 2020 Ford strengthened the block and head castings, switched to forged steel short-skirt pistons, dropped compression from 16.2:1 to 15.8:1, and fitted powdered-metal fractured-cap rods and a new medium-carbon steel crank with a revised damper. Injection pressure went up to 36,000 psi. Pickups make 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, and chassis cabs are rated at 330 hp and 825 lb-ft. The engine carries a B10 life rating of 500,000 miles.
What fails and why
The bottom end is not the weak spot on this engine. The problems owners deal with sit around it.
- Fuel in the oil. DPF regeneration injects extra fuel, and some of it can wash past the rings into the crankcase. Short trips and long idle time make it worse. Watch for a rising dipstick level, thin oil or a diesel smell in the oil.
- Exhaust manifolds. Thin castings and constant heat cycling lead to leaks and cracks, mostly on high-mileage and heavy-tow trucks. Listen for a tick on cold start, and look for soot trails at the manifold, slower turbo spool or a burnt smell.
- CP4.2 fuel pump. When the Bosch pump fails it can send metal through the injectors, rails and lines, and the repair can mean a full fuel system. Hard starts, lost power and metal in the fuel filters are the signs. Ford has recall work out on these years, so have a dealer run your VIN.
- Glow plugs. Tip breakage was an early-production problem, mostly on chassis cabs, and is not a 2020-2022 pickup pattern. A failed glow plug still causes long cold-weather cranking and glow plug circuit codes.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For most of these trucks the right move is OE-spec maintenance done on time: a good filter and 13 quarts of 10W-30 that meets Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 spec, changed at 5,000 miles on severe duty or when the oil life monitor calls for it. Gaskets, belts and pans go back stock unless you have a reason to change them. Upgrades make sense when you are already in deep. If the heads are coming off, a head stud kit is the upgrade path over the factory bolts. If a manifold has cracked, a heavier-walled high-silicon ductile iron manifold is the durable fix rather than another thin factory casting. A heavy-duty cast aluminum pan is an option when the lower pan has to come off or is damaged.
What we carry
This collection covers the whole engine. For oil service you will find Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil CK-4 engine oils and oil stabilizers, plus MAHLE and PPE MicroPure XR oil filters. MAHLE also supplies valve cover gasket sets, a lower oil pan gasket, a vacuum pump gasket, valve stem seals, a thrust washer set and a cylinder head bolt set. Dorman covers stock-style valve cover gaskets, a lower oil pan and a clutch fan blade. Dayco serpentine belts and an idler pulley handle the front drive. On the upgrade side, PPE has a head stud kit, a heavy-duty cast aluminum oil pan and a billet oil fill cap, Mag-Hytec has a diesel oil pan, and XDP offers a head stud kit, street performance pushrods, a stock replacement harmonic balancer and an oil pan bolt kit. SPE Motorsport adds a billet drain plug, a billet oil pump gear and an internal CCV catch can, BD Diesel has a high idle control, and Fleece Performance Engineering has a cooling fan pigtail.
Fitment notes
Model year matters on this engine. The 2020-2022 pistons, rods, crank, block and heads are revised from 2011-2019 parts, so short blocks, long blocks and head castings do not cross the 2020 line. They are not 2023 High-Output parts either, since the HO engine runs 15.2:1 compression, stainless manifolds and a water-jacketed compressor housing. Chassis cab 6.7L engines use a different turbo and calibration than the pickups. Bolt-on parts like filters, belts and gaskets often carry wide year spans, but read each listing. Several valve cover gaskets here are listed through 2020 only, and belt choice depends on whether your truck has one alternator or two. That goes for XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited and Tremor trucks alike. Verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke take?
It takes 13.0 quarts with the filter. Ford calls for SAE 10W-30 meeting WSS-M2C171-F1 above 0 F, with 5W-40 for colder use, and the Motorcraft filter is FL-2051S. The 2023 and newer engines take 15 quarts, so do not go by a newer truck's numbers.
Why is the oil level on my dipstick going up?
On this engine a rising level is the classic sign of fuel dilution. DPF regens inject extra fuel that can wash past the rings, and short trips and idling make it worse. Thin oil and a diesel smell back it up. Change the oil on the oil life monitor and engine hours, not just miles.
Can I use 2011-2019 engine parts on my 2020-2022 truck?
Many bolt-on service parts carry over, and plenty of listings here span 2011 through 2023 or later. Core engine parts are different. Ford changed the pistons, rods, crank, block and heads for 2020, so short blocks, long blocks and head castings are not interchangeable across that split.
Is the 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke a durable engine?
It carries a B10 life rating of 500,000 miles, and the rotating assembly is not where trouble shows up. The known weak point is the CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump, and exhaust manifold cracks show up on high-mileage tow rigs. Stay on top of oil service, especially if the truck idles a lot or runs short trips.
Will a 2023 High-Output long block or manifold fit my truck?
No. The 2023 and newer High-Output engine uses 15.2:1 compression, stainless exhaust manifolds and a water-jacketed turbo compressor housing. A 2020-2022 long block or manifold is not an HO part, so do not mix the two when you shop.
