The 6.7L Cummins in the 2025-present Ram 2500 and 3500

For 2025 Ram dropped the two-tier diesel lineup. There is no standard-output and high-output split and no 68RFE or Aisin AS69RC behind the engine: every Cummins pickup gets 430 hp at 2,800 rpm and 1,075 lb-ft at 1,800 rpm, a TorqueFlite HD eight-speed (the ZF PowerLine 8, designation 8AP1075) and a 3.42 rear axle. Ram calls the engine redesigned and the parts list agrees — a new head with the injectors outside the valve cover and external rail lines, larger valves, a higher-pressure fuel system (Diesel Hub identifies a Bosch CP8 rated to 39,000 psi; Ram only says higher-pressure), a Gen II Holset HE300VG variable-geometry turbo that also serves as the two-mode exhaust brake, one glow plug per cylinder instead of the intake grid heater, an engine-mounted diesel oxidation catalyst, and top-load cartridge oil and fuel filters. The body is still the fifth-generation HD; 2025 is a mid-cycle refresh of it. More Cummins coverage sits on the engine hub.

What fails and why

These trucks only started arriving in early 2025, so the record so far is mostly electrical and recall history. The loudest owner-reported pattern is rear wheel-speed sensors on 3500 dual-rear-wheel trucks with the 12-inch AAM rear axle: ABS, automatic emergency braking, stability control, four-wheel drive and cruise drop out together, PRND can flash, the truck may refuse to shift or shut off, and a U1412 code turns up. Some owners report replacement sensors failing again within about 2,000 miles. Recalls so far cover a blank instrument cluster (25V826, 26V225), an inaccurate gear display (25V297), a PCM speed-limiter calibration (26V288) and the occupant restraint controller (25V882) — those are dealer software updates — plus 26V059, which replaces a trailer tow module that can cut trailer lights and brakes. Mechanically, treat the 6.7L family patterns as things to watch rather than 2025 facts: head-gasket leakage under high cylinder pressure, fuel dilution of the oil on idle-heavy duty cycles, and soot and ash sticking the VGT nozzle ring, which usually shows up first as a weak exhaust brake. The front end is older than the engine — Thuren calls the factory track bar the first wear item on 2013-and-up Ram HD and wants it replaced around 20,000 miles.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Early on, this truck mostly needs maintenance done right. Oil is API CK-4 — 10W-30 above 0 degrees F and 5W-40 synthetic below, which is the 2019-on spec, so confirm it in your 2025 manual — through the 2025-2027 cartridge filter (Fleetguard LF16453 or Mopar 68677810AA). The fuel side runs a pair of top-load cartridges (Fleetguard FK11008NN or Mopar 68677800AA), and those filters are the main protection the new high-pressure pump gets. Use the factory organic-acid coolant and do not mix chemistries. The eight-speed takes Mopar AT818 / ZF Lifeguard Hybrid 2 and nothing else. Lubricity-boosting fuel additives are the compliant answer to the lubricity shortfall in US ULSD that Diesel Hub ties to Bosch pump wear. When you upgrade, start where this platform actually benefits: a heavy-duty track bar and a high-pressure steering stabilizer, better shocks, a leveling kit sized to keep the track bar near stock length, rear air helper springs on trucks without factory air, and a gauge or monitor of your own so you can watch EGT, boost, regen and transmission temperature.

What we carry for this truck

Suspension and steering: Bilstein shocks, BDS Suspension lift kits, drop pitman arms, dual steering stabilizer mounting kits and sway-bar disconnects, and Daystar comfort-ride leveling kits. Towing: B&W Trailer Hitches Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts, including MultiPro/MultiFlex tailgate shanks, plus Air Lift air springs and onboard compressors; the rest is on the hitches page. Fluids and chemistry: Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond CK-4 oils, Diesel Extreme and Everyday Diesel Treatment, Lucas Oil oils, and Alliant Power Lubriguard alongside the rest of the fuel additives. Fuel and filtration: FASS water separator and particulate elements, plus fuel-system parts from Exergy Performance and Pacific Performance Engineering. Repair parts: genuine Cummins thermostats, oil cooler and oil pan gaskets, front crank seals, timing gear case gaskets and belt tensioners, plus Dorman exhaust manifold bolts. Wehrli Custom Fabrication lists 2025-2026 pieces — an OEM-placement coolant tank kit and a Stage 1 high-flow intake bundle — along with an AAM 12-inch differential cover and traction bar bushings and heims that span a wider year range, and Mishimoto handles cooling parts and transmission coolers. For gauges, Edge Products Insight CTS3 with EAS EGT and pressure sensor kits; for exhaust work behind the DPF, MBRP 409 stainless mufflers and resonators.

Fitment notes

Order by 2025-plus fitment, not 2019-plus: block, head, pistons, intake manifold, injectors, rails, turbo and filters all changed. There is no grid heater here, so intake horns and grid-heater housings listed for 2019-2024 do not apply. The DOC is engine-mounted, which makes the downpipe and everything between turbo and DPF different, and DPF-back fitment splits by single versus dual rear wheel and by 6-foot-4 versus 8-foot bed. On 3500s, duallies carry the 12-inch AAM rear axle and single-rear-wheel trucks do not, so covers, gears, hubs, rotors and wheel-speed sensors are not interchangeable — and the rear sensors differ left to right. No 68RFE or Aisin pans, filters, fluid or converters fit, and the HEMI's TorqueFlite HD is a different unit (ZF 8HP75) than the diesel's 8AP1075. Chassis cab 3500/4500/5500 trucks share this engine at 360 hp and 800 lb-ft, so calibration-specific parts can differ. Factory rear air suspension on a 2500, or supplemental air on a 3500, rules out most aftermarket air helper kits, and lifts past three inches need track-bar drop brackets. Front fascia, grille and headlights are new for 2025, so front-end accessories have to be year-specific. Check the build sheet or VIN when it matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2025 6.7L Cummins the same engine as the 2019-2024 truck?

No. Ram redesigned the block and head, moved the injectors outside the valve cover with external rail lines, fitted larger valves, a new Gen II Holset HE300VG turbo and a higher-pressure fuel system, and replaced the intake grid heater with glow plugs. Output is a single rating of 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft. Assume engine hard parts do not carry over, and confirm a listing says 2025 or later before you buy.

Do my 2019-2024 oil and fuel filters fit a 2025?

No. Both moved to top-load cartridges: Fleetguard LF16453 or Mopar 68677810AA for oil, and a set of two Fleetguard FK11008NN or Mopar 68677800AA cartridges for fuel. Spin-on filter wrenches and the older fuel filter caps do not fit the new housings either. Quick-service kits that bundle the oil, fuel, air and crankcase-ventilation filters for 2025-2027 Ram HD are the simplest way to buy them.

What transmission is behind it, and what fluid does it take?

Every 2025-and-newer Cummins pickup uses the TorqueFlite HD eight-speed, which is the ZF PowerLine 8 (8AP1075), with its own transmission-mounted cooler. The only approved fluid is Mopar AT818 / ZF Lifeguard Hybrid 2; ATF+4 and Aisin fluid are both wrong for it. Diesel Hub puts fluid and the pan-integrated filter at 60,000 miles or 48 months. No 68RFE or Aisin AS69RC parts apply.

My 3500 dually throws ABS, 4WD and cruise warnings and sometimes will not shift. Where do I start?

Owner reports on 2025-2026 3500 duallies point at the rear wheel-speed sensors on the 12-inch AAM axle, often with a U1412 code, and the same event can leave PRND flashing or the engine running. Replacement sensors have reportedly failed again within about 2,000 miles, and left and right are not the same part. Before chasing wiring, check the truck's open recalls — the cluster and trailer tow module recalls produce overlapping symptoms.

How much will a 2025-2026 Ram diesel tow?

The headline 36,610-lb figure is a 3500 dual-rear-wheel regular cab 4x4 on a gooseneck with the 3.42 axle; a crew cab dually is 33,890 lb and a conventional hitch is 23,000 lb. A 2026 2500 diesel is rated up to 20,000 lb, and a 2025 2500 crew cab 4x4 with the standard bed is listed at 19,890 lb. Match the hitch to your own cab, bed and rear-wheel configuration — dually bed and puck geometry differs from single-rear-wheel. If trailer lights or brakes cut out, check recall 26V059 before blaming the wiring.

Can a 2025 Cummins be tuned?

The engine ships with one factory calibration at 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft. For a street truck the only path we will sell is an emissions-compliant device carrying a CARB EO number that covers 2025-plus Ram 6.7L, so ask us before you order and do not assume 2019-2024 hardware transfers — the engine calibration and the truck's electrical architecture both changed. What we do stock is monitoring: plug-in OBD-II gauges and Edge EAS sensor kits that show EGT, boost, regen status and transmission temperature.
