How your truck steers depends on what is under the front. A 4x4 F-250, F-350 or F-450 rides on a Dana Super 60 solid front axle, and the steering runs from a recirculating-ball gear to the pitman arm, drag link, tie rods, track bar and a steering linkage damper, which is the factory stabilizer. A 2WD truck uses Ford's Twin I-Beam independent front instead, so its linkage and knuckle parts are a different family. The power steering pump supplies hydraulic assist to the gear. Think of the 4WD linkage as a chain. Every joint hands force to the next one, and a worn joint anywhere lets the front end move in ways the damper then has to soak up.
What fails and why
Start with the recall, because it is the one hard-part steering campaign on this platform. Under NHTSA 25V626 (Ford 25S94), the steering column upper shaft on certain 2020-2021 F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks may detach, which can cause loss of steering control. The warning sign is a column that feels loose or unstable. A Ford dealer inspects the shaft and repairs or replaces it.
The other complaint you will hear about is a violent front-end shimmy after a bump or expansion joint at highway speed, typically above 45 mph, that stops when you slow down. Ford addressed it on certain 2017-2019 trucks with a redesigned steering linkage damper under Customer Satisfaction Program 20N04. Your 2020-2022 truck left the factory with that later damper design and is not covered by 20N04, and shimmy reports on these years are anecdotal. When it does show up, worn linkage joints feed the oscillation. There is no documented failure pattern for the steering gear itself on 2020-2022 trucks.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On a stock-height truck, Ford's own answer to shimmy was a better damper, so a fresh stabilizer is a sensible step once the linkage checks out tight. The Bilstein B8 5100 series stabilizer is a single-damper replacement listed for 2017-2026 4WD trucks. BDS Suspension dual stabilizer kits put two dampers on the linkage and are sold by lift height, one for 0-2 inches and one for 2.5-9 inches.
Lifted trucks are a different job. Raising a 4WD Super Duty moves the axle off center and changes steering geometry, which is why leveling and lift kits add a track bar relocation bracket and caster correction. BDS also sells a 5-inch drop pitman arm for lifted 4WD trucks, used when a lift kit calls for one to bring the drag link angle back in line. A new gearbox or pump is a straight repair part, not an upgrade.
What we carry
This collection covers stabilizers, mounting hardware, a pitman arm, a gearbox, a pump, alignment hardware and fluid. BDS Suspension supplies dual stabilizer kits for 0-2 inch and 2.5-9 inch lifts, a separate dual stabilizer mounting kit for 2.5-9 inch lifts, the 5-inch drop pitman arm, and a dual stabilizer kit with FOX 2.0 performance shocks for 2017-2024 F-450 and F-550 trucks. Bilstein offers the B8 5100 series stabilizer (24-286558). XDP MFG has the XD759 Stock+ power steering gearbox, sold new for 2020-2024 trucks, and the XD729 power steering pump, new with pulley, for 2017-2022. BD Diesel makes the 1032103 cam adjuster kit for 2011-2022 Powerstroke trucks, and Lucas Oil 10823 power steering fluid covers the service side. For engine, fuel and drivetrain parts, start at the Powerstroke hub.
Fitment notes
Drivetrain matters more than anything here. 2WD Twin I-Beam parts such as tie rods and I-beam pivots do not interchange with 4WD solid-axle steering parts, and the Bilstein stabilizer, the BDS lift-height kits and the drop pitman arm are all listed for 4WD. F-450 owners should look twice: the BDS kit with FOX shocks is built for F-450 and F-550, and at least one leveling-kit maker's caster-correction bushing does not work on 10-lug F-450 trucks. Some 2020-2026 trucks also need to keep the factory track bar bracket if the axle shifts off center after a lift. Several listings run past 2022, but 2023 started an all-new Super Duty generation, so read the year range on each product. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker before you order.
Frequently asked questions
My 2021 F-350 shakes hard after a bump at highway speed. Is that the 20N04 problem?
It matches what Ford described for 20N04: sustained steering wheel oscillation after rough pavement or an expansion joint, typically above 45 mph. But 20N04 covered certain 2017-2019 trucks, and your 2021 already left the factory with the redesigned damper. Have the pitman arm, drag link, tie rods and track bar checked for worn joints first, then replace the stabilizer if the linkage is tight.
Is there a steering recall on 2020-2022 Super Duty trucks?
Yes. NHTSA 25V626 (Ford 25S94) covers certain 2020-2021 F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks whose steering column upper shaft may detach. A Ford dealer inspects the shaft and repairs or replaces it. Check your VIN before you buy parts for a loose or unstable column.
Which BDS stabilizer kit fits my truck?
Go by lift height. BDS sells a dual stabilizer kit for 0-2 inches of lift and another for 2.5-9 inches, plus a mounting kit built for the 2.5-9 inch range. F-450 and F-550 owners get their own BDS kit that pairs the dual stabilizer with FOX 2.0 performance shocks.
Can I put 4WD steering parts on my 2WD truck?
No. 2WD Super Duty trucks use Ford's Twin I-Beam front, and its tie rods and pivots do not interchange with the 4WD Dana Super 60 linkage. Most stabilizers and the drop pitman arm here are listed for 4WD, so check the drivetrain in the product title.
Does the XDP power steering pump fit a 2022?
The XD729 is listed for 2017-2022 6.7L Powerstroke trucks and comes new with the pulley. The XD759 gearbox is listed for 2020-2024. Confirm by VIN with the fitment checker before ordering either one.
