2020-2024 GMC 1500 3.0L Duramax Parts & Upgrades

Sierra 1500 buyers chose the 3.0L Duramax for range and for a torque curve that is already working at 1,250 rpm. This page gathers parts for the 2020-2024 GMC Sierra 1500 with that inline-six: RPO LM2 through 2022, RPO LZ0 from 2023. Settle which of the two you have before you order, because the 2023 update changed hardware, not just the power rating.

What the LM2/LZ0 3.0L Duramax is built like

Three liters, six cylinders in a row, 24 valves, and chain-driven cams at the back of the block. The case is a sand-cast aluminum deep-skirt block with pressed-in iron liners and an aluminum lower crankcase extension bolted to seven nodular-iron main caps, with a forged crank and forged rods inside it. One Garrett ball-bearing variable-geometry turbo, liquid-cooled and packaged tight to the exhaust manifold, peaks around 28 psi gauge and provides the exhaust brake you feel in Tow/Haul. Charge air passes through a water-to-air cooler with its own variable-speed electric pump rather than a front-mount intercooler. Injection is Denso common rail at up to 2,500 bar with as many as ten events per cycle, on ULSD, B20 maximum. The LM2 rates 277 hp and 460 lb-ft with 95 percent of peak torque on tap at 1,250 rpm, and that low-rpm pull is the reason this engine sells: by 2024 roughly one in five Sierra 1500 buyers was ordering the diesel. Cooling is GM's Active Thermal Management, with an engine-driven pump, two electric pumps, an electrically actuated three-valve coolant control valve, seven coolant temperature sensors and 20.2 quarts of Dex-Cool. The 10L80 ten-speed is the only transmission offered behind it.

2020 through 2024 on a Sierra: the splits that matter

The diesel arrived for 2020, a year behind the T1 body, and AT4 was one of the trims confirmed with it at launch. The 2022 refresh put the 3.0L in Denali Ultimate; AT4X launched that year with the gas V8 and did not get the diesel until 2024. Which of SLE, Elevation, SLT and Denali offered the engine in a given year is not worth guessing at, so read the window sticker or the RPO list on the glovebox label. Two dividing lines run through this range. The engine changes for 2023: LM2 becomes LZ0, eighth VIN digit T becomes 8, output goes to 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, and inside there are steel stepped-bowl pistons at 15.2:1, longer rods, thicker liners and head gasket, a redesigned head with longer intake valves, new injectors, a revised turbo, a larger water pump and oil cooler, a second DEF injector, and an oil-pump belt interval stretched to 200,000 miles. The body changes mid-2022: early Sierra 1500 Limited trucks (RPO J21, twelfth VIN digit 4 or lower) keep the 2019-2021 sheet metal and interior, while refreshed J22 trucks have the new front end and the console shifter on bucket-seat trims.

Where these trucks give trouble

Start with the coolant control valve, because it is the known weak point in this cooling system on both engines. When it fails its own on-board test you get a check-engine light with P1098 or P26BB, cooling fans running after key-off, a long warm-up, weak cabin heat, sometimes a coolant seep at the valve itself. GM special coverage N252508341 lists 2021-2022 LM2 pickups and N252508340 lists 2023 LZ0 pickups, so a dealer VIN check comes before a parts order, and bulletin 25-NA-185 requires the current ECM calibration with every valve or the failure repeats. The ten-speed is next. Diesel 2020-2022 Sierras are covered by recall N242454440, which NHTSA lists as 24V-797, for a control valve that wears; it shows up as a harsh downshift, P0747, or a momentary rear-wheel lock-up out of eighth gear, and the remedy is TCM software that watches for the wear and defaults the transmission to fifth, with special coverage N242454441 for valve-body work. On 2021-2024 trucks, GM 25-NA-255 now repairs that valve body with a steel feed-limit-low valve, a higher-tension spring and a spacer plate instead of replacing it. A steady-speed shudder between 25 and 80 mph has its own bulletin, 25-NA-369, and is frequently engine-side rather than torque-converter shudder. On 2020-2021 LM2 trucks there is the long-crank complaint, chased variously to harnesses, camshaft exciter wheels, fuse-box torque, actuators and fuel pump modules, with an ECM update as GM's first step; a sturdier reluctor arrived by 2022. LM2 engines under serial 21298JDXXX get a camshaft cover under TSB 22-NA-027 for oil consumption. And on LZ0 trucks, GM 25-NA-202 traces turbo failures, meaning an oil leak at the turbo, smoke, power loss and P0299, to the wrong oil or a low oil level.

Repair to stock, or upgrade

That turbo bulletin is the clearest argument for fluid discipline on this truck: seven quarts of 0W-20 dexosD through an ACDelco PF66 filter, and dexosD is the diesel license, not gasoline dexos1. Dex-Cool only in the cooling system. DEXRON ULV in the ten-speed, 75W-85 in the differentials, DEXRON VI in the transfer case. A GM technician interviewed about the rear timing chain runs 5,000-mile oil changes instead of letting the dash stretch toward 7,500; that is one technician's practice rather than a GM interval, but it is cheap insurance on an engine whose chains live behind the transmission. Tow often and the severe schedule applies: differentials and transfer case at 50,000 miles, fuel filters at 20,000 to 25,000 miles, and Tow/Haul selected so the integral exhaust brake carries part of the braking load and the friction brakes last longer. The upgrades worth buying for a Sierra are the ones that handle heat and load. Downstream exhaust, auxiliary transmission cooling, a larger water-to-air charge air cooler, rear air helper springs and a receiver rated for your tongue weight, a monitor for EGT, transmission temperature and DEF level, and a leveling or lift kit picked by trim rather than by year.

What we carry for the Sierra 1500

Towing and hauling parts are the heart of this page. B&W Trailer Hitches supplies receivers and Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts, including shanks sized around the MultiPro tailgate, and Air Lift covers rear air helper springs, onboard compressors and controls; the wider hitches page has more. PPE handles the driveline and cooling side with bar-and-plate transmission coolers, transmission fluid thermal bypass valves, and 10L80 pan filters and gaskets. PPE and MBRP cover downstream exhaust, including DPF-back stainless kits plus mufflers and resonators that bolt on behind the factory aftertreatment. For stance and control there are BDS Suspension leveling kits, upper control arms and Recoil traction-bar mounting kits, Bilstein B8 5100 shocks, and traction-bar bushings and heims from Wehrli Custom Fabrication. Service parts run through ACDelco: air, oil and transmission filters, Dex-Cool, DEXRON ULV, and the LM2 and LZ0 glow plugs. Filtration and fuel care add FASS water separator and particulate filter packs, fuel-system parts from Exergy Performance, cooling parts from Mishimoto, intake and filtration parts from AFE, accessories from Fleece Performance Engineering, and fuel additives from Lucas Oil. Monitors, EGT kits and pressure sensors come from Edge Products, and the rest of the Duramax catalog branches off this page.

Fitment notes

Three questions answer most fitment on a 2020-2024 Sierra diesel: which engine, which body, which axle. The engine is VIN digit eight, T for LM2 and 8 for LZ0, and injectors, glow plugs, turbos and most intake and exhaust listings split there. PPE publishes separate DPF-back kits for 2020-2022 and 2023-2026, while other parts such as its water-to-air cooler and boot kits cover 2020 through 2026. The body is the twelfth digit on 2022 trucks, where a Limited at 4 or lower takes 2019-2021 grilles, bumper covers and headlights. The axle is an RPO on the glovebox label: 9.5-inch SU7 or SU8, or the 9.76-inch G80 or G94 with the automatic locking differential that comes with Max Trailering. Front differentials on 4WD trucks are 8.0-inch or 8.25-inch. Max Trailering was in short supply on 2023 diesels, so take your tow rating off the door and trailering labels. Lift and leveling kits are grouped by trim: AT4 needs the factory-lift variant, and AT4X on its Multimatic DSSV dampers, along with Adaptive Ride Control trucks, is excluded from most kits. The same 3.0L is used in Yukon and Yukon XL, so confirm a listing names the pickup. One more trap: a 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited is the old body, so hitches listed through 2019 do not fit these trucks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell an LM2 Sierra from an LZ0?

Read the eighth character of the VIN. T is the LM2, built 2020 through 2022, rated 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. An 8 is the LZ0, 2023 and 2024, rated 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. The LZ0 also added a second DEF injector and moved glow plug control into the ECM, so it is worth knowing before you buy injectors, glow plugs, a turbo or an exhaust system.

My Sierra's fans keep running after I shut it off. Is that the coolant valve?

It is the classic symptom. The electrically actuated coolant control valve fails its own diagnostic and sets P1098 or P26BB along with fans running after key-off, a long warm-up and poor heat from the vents. Have a dealer check your VIN against special coverage N252508341 for 2021-2022 LM2 pickups or N252508340 for 2023 LZ0 pickups before you pay for anything, and make sure whoever does the job installs the current ECM calibration that bulletin 25-NA-185 requires.

Is my 2021 Sierra 1500 part of the ten-speed recall?

Diesel 2020-2022 Sierra 1500s are in GM recall N242454440, listed by NHTSA as 24V-797, for a 10L80 control valve that wears. Symptoms are a harsh downshift, P0747, and in rare cases a momentary rear lock-up coming out of eighth gear. The remedy is TCM software that detects the wear and holds the transmission in fifth gear with a warning, and special coverage N242454441 covers valve-body repair. Your dealer confirms it by VIN.

Will a leveling kit listed for a 2020 Sierra 1500 fit my AT4X?

Usually not. Most kits for the 2019-and-newer 1500 specifically exclude AT4X and ZR2 trucks on Multimatic DSSV dampers, and they exclude Adaptive Ride Control as well. AT4 trucks already sit on roughly two inches of factory lift, so they take the factory-lift version of a kit rather than the standard one. Owners running 35-inch tires on standard-height trims generally report needing a two-inch level and some trimming, which is owner experience rather than a published fitment.

Which oil does the 3.0L take, and does it actually matter?

Seven quarts of SAE 0W-20 carrying GM's dexosD diesel license, with an ACDelco PF66 filter. It matters more here than on most engines: GM bulletin 25-NA-202 attributes LZ0 turbocharger failures to gasoline-spec dexos1 or unlicensed oil and to low oil level, and it requires replacing the turbo oil feed pipe whenever the turbo is replaced. Check the level on level ground about fifteen minutes after shutdown.
