Call or Text (352) 722-5295The L5D is the commercial Duramax: the same 6.6L V8 as the pickups, retuned for the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD chassis cabs. These are working trucks that earn their keep, so the parts here lean toward keeping one in service rather than making it quicker.
What the L5D is
GM brought the Silverado medium duty back for 2019, and the L5D came with it. Mechanically it is the Duramax you already know, a 90-degree 6.6L V8 of about 403 cubic inches at 16.0:1 compression, derated from the pickup version for commercial duty cycles. It is rated 350 hp across the board, with 700 lb-ft of torque through the 2023 model year and 750 lb-ft from 2024. Every one of them runs an Allison six-speed automatic, and no manual was offered. The same engine also went into the International CV series, so parts listings for these trucks sometimes read across both.
How it differs from the pickup L5P
The engine family is shared, which is why a good deal of 6.6L hardware carries across: the Denso HP4 high-pressure pump used on the 2017-and-later Duramax is the same part family, and gasket and service kits are frequently listed for the whole 2017 to 2026 range. What does not carry across is everything the truck is built around. A 4500HD, 5500HD or 6500HD is a chassis cab, sold to be upfitted, with its own frame, exhaust routing, cooling package, fuel plumbing and body. Suspension, brakes, driveline and anything that bolts to the chassis are specific to these trucks. Treat the engine as familiar and the truck as its own thing.
Fuel cleanliness is the job
On a medium-duty Duramax, the high-pressure fuel system is both the expensive part and the one most affected by how the truck is fueled. These trucks often fill from yard tanks, transfer tanks and smaller rural stations rather than high-turnover pumps, which is exactly where water and debris come from. Alliant Power catalogs an L5D-specific fuel contamination kit for the 2019-2024 trucks, and that tells you where the risk sits. Keeping the filters on schedule, draining the separator, and running a reputable fuel treatment is the cheapest maintenance you will do on one of these.
What we carry
The L5D side of our catalog is deliberately service-focused. Alliant Power supplies the remanufactured HP4 high-pressure pumps and their installation kits, the L5D fuel contamination kit, injector and EGR gasket kits, and LUBRIGUARD fuel treatment. FASS covers water separator and particulate filtration, including the extended-length elements and filter packs. ACDelco Dex-Cool and Mishimoto coolants handle the cooling system, with Mishimoto and Pacific Performance Engineering turbo blankets and heat wrap for under-hood heat. MBRP mufflers and resonators and PPE stainless tips cover the exhaust side. XDP contributes fuel tank sumps, thread chasers and additives, S&B the filter service kits and shop trays, and Edge Products the pressure sensors for monitoring. Fuel additives and turbo accessories round it out.
Before you order
Confirm the truck before the engine. These pages cover the 2019-and-later Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD chassis cab; a 2500HD or 3500HD pickup is the L5P and belongs on its own pages, even though the two share a long block. Because chassis cabs are sold incomplete and finished by an upfitter, two trucks of the same year and model can differ in exhaust routing, fuel tank location, wheelbase and bodywork, so a part that clears on one may not on another. Check wheelbase and body type as well as year, and verify by VIN when a part bolts to the chassis rather than the engine. If you run a mixed fleet of these and pickups, keep the filter part numbers separate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the L5D the same engine as the L5P?
Same 6.6L Duramax family, different calibration and duty rating. The L5D is the commercial version, rated 350 hp against the pickup L5P's higher numbers, and it is matched to an Allison six-speed rather than the pickup transmission. Engine-internal and fuel-system service parts often cross over; anything attached to the chassis does not.
What years did the L5D run?
From the 2019 model year, when GM returned to the medium-duty market with the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD. Output stayed at 350 hp throughout, with torque rising from 700 to 750 lb-ft for 2024. If you are shopping for a 2017 or 2018 medium-duty Chevrolet, it is not an L5D.
Can I use L5P pickup parts on my 4500HD?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what the part bolts to. Shared engine hardware such as the HP4 pump, gaskets and some filtration is commonly listed across the 6.6L range. Suspension, brakes, exhaust, cooling and anything chassis-mounted is specific to the medium-duty truck. Read the fitment on the listing rather than assuming, and call us if it is ambiguous.
Why is there so much filtration in this collection?
Because it is what these trucks need most. The high-pressure fuel system does not tolerate water or debris, and medium-duty trucks are more likely than pickups to be fueled from yard and transfer tanks where both turn up. Alliant Power listing an L5D-specific fuel contamination kit for the 2019-2024 trucks is a fair indication of how often that goes wrong.
I run a fleet of these. Can you help with ordering?
Yes. Call the shop with your year, model and wheelbase and we will confirm the right part numbers before anything ships, which matters more than usual on upfitted trucks. We are a working diesel repair shop in Wildwood, Florida, and we are happy to put a repeat filter and service list together so reordering is straightforward.
