2016-2022 GMC Canyon 2.8L Duramax Parts & Upgrades

These are the parts for a 2016-2022 GMC Canyon running the 2.8L Duramax LWN, the engine that let a midsize pickup pull 7,700 lb. The page covers fuel filtration, compliant DPF-back exhaust, trailering and air-spring hardware, shocks, fluids and filters. Worth knowing up front: most of this truck's maintenance list is cheap, and the one expensive scheduled job is the 150,000-mile timing belt.

What GM built into the Canyon diesel

The 2.8L Duramax LWN arrived in the Canyon for 2016, a year into the second-generation truck, and it stayed at 181 hp and 369 lb-ft through 2022 without a single rating change. The U.S. calibration gives up a little peak power to hold roughly 90 percent of torque across a wider rpm band, which is why the truck feels unbothered at altitude and behind a trailer. One transmission was ever offered with it: the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed, rated at exactly the engine's 369 lb-ft of input torque, with Tow/Haul and the exhaust brake worked through the variable-geometry turbo's vanes. There was never a manual. Diesel trucks got the 3.42 rear axle (RPO GU6), a 21-gallon tank approved for B20, ceramic glow plugs and an engine with a toothed belt driving both camshafts and the Denso high-pressure pump. It belongs to the Duramax family but shares almost nothing with the 6.6L V8, and GM retired it in North America after 2022.

Trouble spots owners actually see

Most of this platform's documented emissions-side history sits in the DEF system, and most of that is cold-weather related. The heaters that keep DEF liquid are serviced with the tank assembly rather than on their own. Two documented oddities are worth knowing before anyone sells you parts: a 2019 truck can set a false DEF quality code when the tank is under about 30 percent during a sustained right-hand turn, and GM's instruction is to fill it and clear the code, and 2022 trucks carry an emissions recall, N222359340, that reflashes the ECM so the DEF pump stops trying to push frozen fluid. A truck parked for months can crystallize DEF in the injector, and after a DEF pump replacement a dry filter in the new pump can throw P20E8 and P249C until GM's leak-test, overnight soak and re-test is followed. Beyond DEF the list is short and specific: a water-rush or gurgle at the heater core on 2015-2019 trucks that GM cures with a revised surge tank and a long bleed; a visible left-side lean on 2015-2018 trucks corrected with a rear shim and sometimes a diesel-specific front spring; intermittent slip or no engagement in Reverse on 2019-2020 trucks traced to the 6L50's center-support housing; fluid dripping near the transfer case on 4x4s; and carbon in the intake with a sticking EGR valve past roughly 100,000 miles, because the calibration runs heavy EGR. The timing belt and the 2016-2017 turbo compressor whine are the two big-ticket items, both documented, both worth checking on a used truck.

Keep it stock or step it up

Towing is what most Canyon diesels do, so start there. The rating is 7,700 lb, 7,600 lb on some 4WD crew cabs, with payload in the 1,450-1,500 lb range, and tongue weight plus a weight-distribution hitch uses that up quickly. Rear air springs are the normal answer to the squat; the bolt-on kit documented for this platform is rated at 1,800 lb and does not fit AT4 or ZR2 suspensions. Service the 6L50 with Dexron VI and the OE filter kit at 45,000 to 60,000 miles if you tow, keep 75W-90 in the rear axle with friction modifier where it is called for, and let the standard exhaust brake and Tow/Haul do the slowing on grades instead of the brake pedal. On the engine, keep OE-spec fuel filters on the cluster's monitor and carry a spare, use a lubricity or cetane additive to offset low-cetane pump fuel, and change oil sooner than 7,500 miles if the truck idles or runs short trips. Compliant power upgrades do exist: an enclosed-box high-flow intake with a CARB EO covering 2016-2018 trucks, a bolt-on 3-inch DPF-back that leaves the DOC, DPF and SCR exactly where GM put them, and CARB EO-numbered calibration documented for 2016-2020 trucks that requires all factory emissions equipment in place. None of that makes the small GT17V turbo or the stock injectors stronger, so if you tow near the rating, spend on filtration and cooling first.

What we carry

Trailering is where this collection runs deepest: B&W Trailer Hitches Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts, including a shank cut for MultiPro/MultiFlex tailgate trucks, other hitch hardware, Air Lift rear air springs with an onboard compressor, Daystar leveling kits, Bilstein shocks and BDS Suspension sway-bar links. Fuel and filtration: FASS and AirDog lift pump systems, FASS extreme water-separator and particulate filter packs, ACDelco TP1007 fuel filters and PF2262G oil filters, XDP fuel tank sumps with and without a return, and Exergy Performance injection parts. Exhaust and turbo: MBRP DPF-back systems, resonators and universal mufflers, PPE stainless tips, silicone hump couplers and titanium turbo blankets, and Alliant Power turbocharger installation kits with the studs and crush washers you should not reuse. Add S&B intake filters, filter wraps and cleaning kits, Mishimoto cooling parts, transmission coolers, ACDelco Dex-Cool, Dayco serpentine belts, Edge EAS EGT and pressure-sensor kits, Lucas Oil and XDP fuel additives, and thread chasers, filter tools and work benches for the bay.

Before you order

Verify three things: cab and bed, trim, and whether the listing was written for a van. DPF-back systems are wheelbase-specific, 128.3 in for the extended cab or crew short bed and 140.5 in for the crew long bed, so bed length decides which kit ships. Trim matters more on the Canyon than people expect. All Terrain ran through 2020, AT4 and Elevation arrived with the 2021 refresh, Denali came a year after the diesel did, and the new fascia and grille in that refresh split front-end and lighting parts at 2021. Rear air-spring kits documented for this platform exclude AT4 suspensions, and GM's own front leveling kit skips 2WD trucks and 20-inch wheels. The LWN also went into Savana 2500/3500 vans, where it runs an 8L90 eight-speed, a different air filter, a different fuel filter and far more coolant, so never cross-shop a van listing onto a Canyon. Diesel availability by trim and cab was never universal, DEF tank assemblies vary by year, the FASS kit is listed for 2016-2020, and retailers disagree on the replacement Garrett turbo's late-model coverage. Check by VIN, use the fitment checker, or call us before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Which Canyon trims came with the 2.8L Duramax?

GMC sold the second-generation Canyon as SL, Base, SLE, SLT and All Terrain through 2020, added Denali a year after the diesel launched, then replaced All Terrain with AT4 and added Elevation for the 2021-2022 refresh. The diesel was not offered across all of them, or across every cab and bed, so the RPO list or the VIN is the only reliable answer for your truck. Trim also decides parts: AT4 suspensions reject some air-spring and leveling kits, and 2021-2022 front-end parts differ from 2016-2020.

What really limits a Canyon diesel's towing?

Not the engine. It is rated at 7,700 lb, 7,600 lb on some 4WD crew cabs, and the 6L50 behind it is rated at exactly the engine's 369 lb-ft. Payload is the real ceiling at roughly 1,450-1,500 lb, which tongue weight and a weight-distribution hitch consume fast, and the rear end sags before anything else complains. Air helper springs and a Dexron VI fluid and filter service at 45,000 to 60,000 miles are the two things most tow rigs want.

Why do I get a Service Emission System message when it is cold?

Usually the DEF side. The tank and supply line have heaters that thaw DEF in freezing weather, and they are serviced with the tank assembly rather than separately. Two exceptions are documented: a 2019 Canyon can set a false DEF quality code when the tank is low during a sustained right-hand turn, where GM says to fill and clear instead of replacing parts, and 2022 trucks have an emissions recall that reflashes the ECM so the DEF pump waits for frozen fluid to thaw. Rule those out before anyone replaces a pump.

What is the clunk or whine coming from the rear axle?

If it clunks over driveway aprons and railroad tracks with the brakes off, it is usually axle-shaft end play from worn C-locks; GM's fix on 2015-2021 trucks is thicker service C-locks once end play reaches 0.32 mm. If the clunk is still there with the brake applied, look at the leaf-spring shackles and the spring pads instead. A whine or growl from about 20 mph up on 2017-2019 trucks built before June 17, 2019 with the 3.42 axle is a separate bulletin: a machining step in the carrier-bearing bore, fixed with carrier bearings or a complete axle.

Can I add power and keep it street legal?

Yes, within limits. CARB EO-numbered calibration is documented for 2016-2020 Canyons and requires every factory emissions device in place, with an optional transmission calibration for shift points and converter lockup. The 2021-2022 trucks have no documented exempt option, and switch-on-the-fly tuning was not available late in the run. A high-flow enclosed intake carries an EO for 2016-2018 and is listed 49-state after that, and a DPF-back exhaust leaves the aftertreatment alone. Also worth knowing: the throttle delay off the line is factory torque management, not a fault.
