Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel system on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 2020 refresh brought the third-generation 6.7L Powerstroke, and the fuel system changed with it. Injection pressure went from 30,000 psi to as much as 36,000 psi, and Ford fitted all-new 19 mm piezo injectors with 8-hole nozzles that can fire up to eight times per stroke to control noise and optimize combustion. The lift pump moved out of the frame-mounted fuel conditioning module and into the tank. From there, fuel passes a 10-micron frame-mounted primary filter with a water separator and a 4-micron secondary filter on top of the engine, on the left side, before the Bosch CP4.2 pressurizes it and sends it to two rails feeding eight injectors. Ford calls for ultra-low-sulfur diesel and allows biodiesel blends up to B20.
What fails and why
The CP4.2 is the weak point, and Ford has put it in writing. Recall 24S78 (NHTSA 24V957000) covers 295,449 2020-2022 Super Duty diesels because biodiesel deposits can form on the pump's roller components and lead to pump failure. Ford ties those deposits to aged biodiesel, including fuel left in the tank during extended parking. The dealer remedy is PCM and TCM software, not a new pump, and recall 26S17 (26V158000) re-covers trucks that were repaired incorrectly. Water and debris are the other pump killers, because the CP4 depends on clean fuel for lubrication.
Watch for extended cranking, a check engine light, unusual pump noise, a power derate or a no-start. Rail pressure codes P0087, P0088 and P0191 are the first electronic sign. If you find metal flakes in a fuel filter, stop driving. A failed CP4 can contaminate the high-pressure pump, all eight injectors, both rails, the high-pressure and return lines, the low-pressure parts and the tank and sending unit, and failures have been documented as early as 200 miles. One more item for certain 2021 trucks: recall 22S01 (NHTSA 22V013000) covers a void in the engine-mounted filter cap that can become a pinhole leak, so a diesel smell or weep at the top of that filter deserves a look.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Stock-style maintenance is the base layer. Change both filters on schedule or earlier and drain the water separator monthly; Ford's 2022 schedule lists filters every 15,000 to 22,500 miles in normal service and 10,000 to 15,000 in severe service, and fuel with high impurity levels can call for changes sooner. Lubricity additives are the common preventive step for a fuel-lubricated pump. Past that, upgrades are about protection. A FASS or AirDog lift pump system adds filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4. A disaster prevention (bypass) kit feeds the CP4 case clean fuel and filters its return to protect the rest of the system if the pump fails. The S&S Diesel Motorsport DCR conversion goes furthest, replacing the CP4.2 outright with a Stanadyne-designed two-piston pump.
What we carry
For filtration and supply: FASS Titanium Signature Series and Drop-In Series systems, water separator and particulate filters and filter packs; AirDog pumps and replacement filters; Fleece Performance Engineering engine-mounted filter assemblies, a fuel filter bypass and injector return line repair fittings; and SPE Motorsport filter systems and billet drain valves. For CP4 protection: the S&S Diesel Motorsport CP4 Disaster Prevention Kit, Fuel Leak Prevention Kit and DCR Pump Conversion, plus the SPE Disaster Prevention 2.0 kit. For the repair after a failure: Alliant Power and XDP MFG fuel contamination kits, with or without the pump, an Alliant Power pump install kit and fuel pressure sensor, and Mahle injector seal and O-ring kits. Exergy Performance rail and supply fittings, Dynomite Diesel Products injectors and high-pressure lines, and XDP tank sumps and a billet drain valve round out the hard parts. On the additive shelf: Hot Shot's Secret, Lucas Oil, Exergy, XDP and Merchant Automotive treatments, including winter anti-gel blends. Shopping across platforms? Fitment notes
The 2020 split matters in this system. 2017-2019 trucks carry the lift pump in a frame-mounted conditioning module; 2020-2022 trucks have it in the tank, so lift pump, tank and sending-unit parts do not cross over. Lift pump kits are sold in 2011-2016, 2017-2022 and 2023+ families; a 2017-2022 kit is the right family for your truck, but read the 2020+ in-tank pump notes before ordering. Factory filter numbers have superseded more than once, so match filters by VIN, not by year alone. XDP tank sumps are used mainly to feed an external FASS or AirDog pump on these trucks, since the factory pump lives in the tank. Pickups and chassis cabs share the engine but have different fuel tank layouts, so confirm cab-and-chassis fitment separately. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Does the CP4 recall on a 2020-2022 F-250 or F-350 replace the pump?
No. Recall 24S78 (NHTSA 24V957000) is remedied with PCM and TCM software updates, with no hardware replaced. Recall 26S17 (26V158000) re-covers trucks that were repaired incorrectly the first time. Check your VIN with Ford or NHTSA to see whether either one is open on your truck.
What should I do if I find metal in my fuel filter?
Stop driving the truck. Metal flakes in a filter are the CP4 red flag, and every mile can push more debris toward the injectors. A full failure can mean replacing all eight injectors, both rails and the high-pressure and return lines, plus cleaning or replacing the tank and sending unit, which is why this collection includes complete contamination kits.
How often should I change the fuel filters on a 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke?
Ford's 2022 schedule lists 15,000 to 22,500 miles in normal service and 10,000 to 15,000 miles in severe service, with the water separator drained monthly. Diesel Hub lists 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 engine hours for severe use. If you buy fuel at questionable stations, change them sooner.
Is a FASS or AirDog system worth it when the truck already has an in-tank lift pump?
On this engine the value is the extra filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4, not just the pump. AirDog's II-5G 165 GPH system and FASS's 2017-2022 systems are both cataloged for these trucks. Because 2020-2022 trucks have the factory pump in the tank, read the install notes for your year before ordering.
Can I run biodiesel in a 2020-2022 Super Duty?
Ford allows blends up to B20. The catch is age: Ford links the CP4 recall deposits to aged biodiesel, including fuel that sat in the tank during long parking. If your truck sits for long stretches, keep the fuel fresh and storage short.
