2020 was a big year for the Super Duty. The truck got its mid-cycle refresh, the third-generation 6.7L Powerstroke came in at 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, and the TorqShift 10R140 10-speed went in behind it. Ford's 2020 towing guide rates the F-250 at a 23,500 lb GCWR standard and 30,000 lb with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package (535), with conventional towing up to 20,000 lb and gooseneck up to 22,800 lb on select configurations. The F-350 SRW is rated to 20,000 lb conventional and 22,800 lb gooseneck. The F-350 DRW reaches 35,750 lb gooseneck with the 4.10 axle, and the F-450 tops out at 37,000 lb gooseneck at a 45,300 lb GCWR. These trucks also brought real towing tech: trailer tow mirrors with a 360-degree view on the 8-inch screen, Pro Trailer Backup Assist and an integrated trailer brake controller.
What fails and why
The documented towing problems on these trucks are mostly recalls, not worn-out parts. The integrated trailer brake controller is covered by software recalls 22V193000 and 25V132000 on 2021-2022 trucks, and 26V104000 on 2021-2026 trucks where the trailer module can lose communication. The symptoms are trailer brakes that will not apply and trailer lights dropping out. Certain 2021 F-350 and F-450 trucks are under recall 21V379000 for a cracked left-hand fifth-wheel mounting bracket under the bed. Certain 2020 F-350s are under 21V087000 because the payload printed on the tire and loading label was overstated, which could lead to overloading; that one is a relabel at the dealer, not a broken part. The last issue is geometry. On 6.75-ft short-box trucks, Ford warns a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer can contact the cab in a 90-degree turn if the combination has not been checked.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Ford's factory towing gear is worth keeping. The tow mirrors, Pro Trailer Backup Assist and integrated trailer brake controller are OEM-grade features on 2020-2022 trucks. Owners add on in the bed and at the axle. An under-bed gooseneck like the B&W Turnoverball GNRK1116 is the common choice for 2017-2022 Super Duty trucks, and Ford's own prep package adds pucks for OEM-compatible fifth-wheel and gooseneck heads. For load leveling, Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 air springs fit leaf-spring Super Duty pickups and work with most side-mount fifth-wheel hitches. Whatever you add, tongue and pin weight come out of payload: figure about 10% of loaded trailer weight on a bumper hitch and 15% on a fifth-wheel or gooseneck.

Fitment notes
Match the ball mount to the receiver. Base F-250s without the tow package have a 2.5-inch receiver. F-250s with the Trailer Tow Package, F-350 SRW diesels and all dually trucks have a 3-inch receiver with a 2.5-inch reducer and a 5/8-inch pin. The F-250's fifth-wheel rating is capped at 19,000 lb by the hitch, even when its gooseneck rating is 22,800 lb. Under-bed hitches and air springs do not always play together; Air Lift's kit excludes Una-Goose hitches. If you install Ford's prep crossmember, plan on leaving the bed liner out, because Ford's instructions say it cannot be reinstalled afterward. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2020-2022 F-250 have a 2.5-inch or 3-inch receiver?
It depends on the package. An F-250 without the Trailer Tow Package has a 2.5-inch receiver, while one with the package has a 3-inch receiver with a 2.5-inch reducer and a 5/8-inch pin. Look at the receiver opening before you order a ball mount.
How much can a 2020 F-350 dually with the 6.7L pull on a gooseneck?
Ford's 2020 towing guide rates the F-350 DRW at 32,400 lb gooseneck with the 3.55 axle and 35,750 lb with the 4.10, at 40,000 and 43,400 lb GCWR. Your exact number depends on cab, axle and options, so check the guide and your door label.
Will air springs work with my under-bed gooseneck hitch?
Usually, but check. Air Lift's LoadLifter 5000 kit for these trucks fits most side-mount fifth-wheel hitches but is not compatible with Una-Goose hitches or cab-and-chassis trucks. Tell us which hitch you run and we will confirm fitment before you order.
Are there recalls I should know about before towing with a 2021 or 2022 Super Duty?
Yes. Trailer brake controller software recalls 22V193000 and 25V132000 cover 2021-2022 trucks, and 26V104000 covers 2021-2026 trucks. Certain 2021 F-350 and F-450 trucks also have recall 21V379000 for a cracked left-hand fifth-wheel bracket. A Ford dealer can tell you if your VIN has anything open.
