Fitment

For 2020-2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD/3500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the 6.6L L5P Duramax and the GM 10L1000 10-speed automatic transmission.

Not for 2017-2019 L5P trucks. Those years run the six-speed Allison 1000, which is a DEXRON VI transmission. The 10L1000 must get DEXRON ULV, not DEXRON VI. This fluid is listed for 2020-2026 trucks, so verify fitment by VIN or call us if you are not sure which transmission you have. More L5P service parts are on our Duramax page.

Why this part

In a 10L1000 the fluid does several jobs at once. It provides power to the hydraulic system that makes the transmission work, it optimizes lubrication of the internal components, and it helps prevent damage by reducing heat caused by friction. ACDelco GM Original Equipment fluids are the true OE fluids installed when GM builds its vehicles, and GM supports them for GM vehicles. This one is designed, engineered and tested to rigorous standards and backed by General Motors.

Fluid condition matters on this transmission. Torque converter clutch shudder, a rumble-strip vibration at light throttle or steady cruise that gets worse once the fluid is hot, is a well-documented 10L1000 complaint, and degraded fluid and heat are among its causes. Regular DEXRON ULV fluid and filter service is the recommended first step before anyone condemns a converter. Tow-heavy trucks are better served by a 30,000-45,000 mile fluid and filter interval than by the longer factory schedule. Heat can also come from a twisted or kinked cooler line, which GM has documented on these trucks, or a thermal bypass valve stuck closed, so fresh fluid is one part of a heat problem and not always the whole fix.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use DEXRON VI in my 2022 Silverado 2500HD?

No. The 10L1000 in 2020 and newer L5P trucks must get DEXRON ULV, not DEXRON VI. DEXRON VI is the spec for the 2017-2019 Allison 1000 six-speed.

Will new fluid fix converter shudder?

It can be part of the fix. Degraded fluid and heat are known causes of 10L1000 shudder, so fresh DEXRON ULV and a new filter are the first step. Fluid alone cannot repair friction material that is already damaged, so updated TCM software and a check of converter slip, the valve body and cooler flow come next.

Should I change the filter at the same time?

Yes. The recommended service is fluid and filter together. For 2020-2026 L5P trucks we stock the ACDelco TF938 filter and seal kit.
