Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension components on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
On a 4x4 F-250 or F-350 from these years, the front axle is a coil-spring Dana 60 monobeam. Radius arms run back from the axle to the frame, and a track bar keeps the axle centered side to side. The rear is a Hotchkiss setup on leaf springs longer than 66 inches, sized that way to resist windup. Components are the pieces that wear out on that layout or get added to it: shocks at each corner, the track bar and its bushings, sway-bar links, bump stops, and on the rear, traction bars and air springs. Many of them list fitment across several Powerstroke Super Duty generations, from the 6.0L through the early 6.7L.
What wears out
The wear list on this front end is short and consistent: track-bar bushings, radius-arm bushings, ball joints, sway-bar end links and the steering damper. As the track-bar and radius-arm bushings wear, the axle can move side to side under the truck. You feel it as a clunk over bumps, a truck that wanders, or a wobble. This is a high-mileage problem, not a new-truck one. End links deserve their own note: they are year-specific, and the 2008-2010 trucks use a link with a bushing at the top and the bottom.
When that wear stacks up, these solid-axle Super Dutys can develop death wobble, the violent shake that starts after a bump. Worn parts and short caster are the two triggers, which is where a caster kit comes in.
Replace or upgrade
If the track bar itself is straight and the joints are the problem, a bushing kit is the simpler fix. SPE Motorsport sells its track bar bushing kit alone or with a removal tool kit for getting the old bushings out. If you would rather replace the bar, BD Diesel's adjustable track bar and track bar bracket swap in for the factory pieces. On a leveled truck that wobbles, caster correction plus a track bar or stabilizer is the fix, and the SPE fixed caster kit covers the caster side.
On the rear, traction bars tie the axle to the frame so the leaf springs don't wrap up when you lean on the throttle with a load behind you. Air springs work alongside the leaf packs to level a loaded truck; add a compressor if you want to adjust pressure from the truck instead of at an air hose.
What we carry
Bilstein shocks in B6 4600, B8 5100 and B8 5160 series, front and rear, plus Bilstein B12 front coil springs with 2 inches of lift for the F-250 4x4. Track bar parts from BD Diesel (adjustable track bar, bracket, replacement bushing kit) and SPE Motorsport (bushing kit, bushing and removal tool kit, fixed caster kit). Wehrli Custom Fabrication traction bar kits in 60-inch and 68-inch lengths, the bracket and hardware install kit, and replacement bushings and heims. Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 helper spring kits, WirelessONE compressor systems, load controllers, spacers and a universal air spring cradle. BDS Suspension adds a rear sway bar link kit for 4-inch lifts and a 1-inch leveling coil spacer, and No Limit Fabrication has a low-profile front bump stop.
Fitment notes
Shocks are listed front or rear and 2WD or 4WD, and some rears are model-specific, like the Bilstein 4600 for the F-350 SRW. The Bilstein B12 coils are listed for the F-250 4x4. Many F-250 and F-350 parts do not fit the wide-track front end on F-450 and F-550 trucks. The Wehrli traction bar kits are universal, so measure your truck and confirm bracket placement before you order. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
What causes a clunk and wander from the front of my 2008-2010 Super Duty?
On a high-mileage truck, worn track-bar and radius-arm bushings are a common cause. They let the axle shift side to side, which you feel as a clunk over bumps and a truck that won't hold its lane. Check the ball joints, sway-bar end links and steering damper while you're under there.
Should I replace the track bar or just the bushings?
If the bar is straight and the mounts are sound, new bushings bring it back. SPE Motorsport's bushing kit and BD Diesel's replacement bushing kit cover that job. If you want to change the bar itself, BD Diesel's adjustable track bar and bracket replace the factory parts.
Are traction bars worth adding on a 6.4L?
The 6.4L makes 350 hp and 650 lb-ft in F-250 and F-350 pickups. Ford answered windup with rear leaf springs longer than 66 inches, and traction bars add another layer of control on trucks that tow heavy or get driven hard. The Wehrli kits here are universal, so pick the 60-inch or 68-inch length that fits your truck.
What does a fixed caster kit do?
It corrects front caster. On these trucks, short caster is one of the triggers for death wobble, and when wobble follows a level, caster correction plus a track bar or stabilizer is the fix. The SPE Motorsport kit lists 2005-2024 Super Duty fitment.
