Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Ford kept a solid front axle under the second-generation Super Duty. On a 4x4 F-250 or F-350, the front is a coil-spring Dana 60 monobeam held in place by radius arms and a track bar. Ford fitted those coils with rate codes from roughly 4,000 to 6,000 lb, so the spring on your truck depends on how it was built. Out back is a Hotchkiss leaf-spring rear with springs longer than 66 inches to resist axle windup, and a truck like the 2008 F-250 SRW pairs a two-stage leaf with a full-floating axle. That rear layout let Ford rate springs and axles model by model, so a rear part for an F-350 is not automatically right for an F-250.
Whether you drive an XL work truck, a Lariat, a King Ranch or a Harley-Davidson on 20-inch wheels, the chassis basics are the same. The Powerstroke under the hood changed for 2011, but plenty of the suspension parts in this collection list fitment from 2005 through 2016.
What fails and why
Suspension trouble on these trucks is mostly a high-mileage story. The track-bar bushings and radius-arm bushings wear, and once they do, the axle can shift side to side. Owners describe it as a clunk over bumps, a truck that wanders in its lane, or a wobble. The usual wear list on this front end reads the same every time: track-bar bushings, radius-arm bushings, ball joints, sway-bar end links and the steering damper. End links are year-specific too. The 2008-2010 design uses a bushing at the top and the bottom, so a link from another Super Duty year may not match.
Then there is death wobble. Solid-axle Super Dutys from these years have a reputation for it: a violent shake in the front end, set off by a bump, when steering or track-bar parts are worn or caster is short. If the shake shows up after you level the truck, the fix is caster correction plus a track bar or steering stabilizer, not just a spacer.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck sits at factory height and you want it to drive right again, stay close to stock. Replace shocks in the correct front or rear and 2WD or 4WD fitment, renew the track-bar bushings, and fix anything else in the front end that has play.
If you plan to level or lift, plan the whole package instead of one part. A 2.5-inch front level is the common setup on these years. Lifts around 4 to 4.5 inches are the next step up, and the well-worn path pairs the height with matched shocks and a high-mount steering stabilizer. If the truck tows or hauls, look at the rear. Air springs working alongside the leaf packs help level a loaded truck, and traction bars tie the rear axle to the frame so the springs don't wrap up under load.
What we carry
Bilstein covers the damping side with B6 4600, B8 5100 and B8 5160 series shocks for front and rear, 2WD and 4WD, plus B8 5112 and B8 5162 series leveling kits and B12 front coil springs with 2 inches of lift for the F-250 4x4. BDS Suspension builds the lift kits: 4, 6 and 8-inch systems for 2008-2010 4WD trucks with radius-arm or 4-link front ends, FOX 2.5 coil-over conversions, leveling coil spacers and a rear sway bar link kit for 4-inch lifts. Daystar adds Comfort Ride leveling kits in 1-inch and 2.5-inch heights and a body mount kit for 2008-2016 trucks.
For the front-end wear parts, BD Diesel offers an adjustable track bar, a track bar bracket and a replacement bushing kit, and SPE Motorsport has track bar bushing kits, a bushing removal tool kit and a fixed caster kit. Air Lift handles the rear with LoadLifter 5000 and LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate helper spring kits, WirelessONE and WirelessAIR compressor systems, load controllers and air spring spacers. Wehrli Custom Fabrication supplies 60-inch and 68-inch traction bar kits, brackets, and replacement bushings and heims, and No Limit Fabrication has a low-profile front bump stop.
Fitment notes
Read each title before you order. Shocks are split front and rear and by 2WD or 4WD, and some are model-specific, such as a Bilstein 4600 rear shock built for the F-350 SRW. The BDS lift kits and most leveling kits here are for 4WD trucks. Many F-250 and F-350 kits do not fit the wide-track front end used on F-450 and F-550 trucks, and the 6.4L F-450 pickup came only as a dually crew cab with an 8-foot box, so treat it as its own truck. Some parts here list 2005-2016 fitment and some are 2008-2010 only; go by the year range, drivetrain and model in the title. When in doubt, verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 2008-2010 F-250 shake hard after hitting a bump?
That violent front-end shake is death wobble, and these solid-axle Super Dutys have a reputation for it. It shows up when track-bar or steering parts are worn or caster is short. Check the usual wear list first: track-bar bushings, radius-arm bushings, ball joints, sway-bar end links and the steering damper. Fix every worn piece you find, not just the first one.
What should I install with a leveling kit on a 6.4L Super Duty?
A 2.5-inch front level is the common setup on these trucks. If wobble shows up afterward, the fix is caster correction and a track bar or stabilizer, not just the spacer. The SPE Motorsport fixed caster kit and the BD Diesel adjustable track bar in this collection address both sides of that, and matched shocks finish the package.
Do I need air bags to tow with my 6.4L?
It depends on the load. Air springs earn their place when the truck squats under a heavy trailer or camper and you want it level again. Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 kits work with the factory leaf springs, and a compressor system lets you adjust pressure as the load changes.
Which Bilstein shock fits my truck?
Start with three facts about your truck: front or rear, 2WD or 4WD, and how high it sits. The titles here call out front or rear and, on most, the drivetrain, and some are model-specific, like the rear 4600 for the F-350 SRW. If the truck is leveled or lifted, choose a shock built for that height and confirm it on the product page or with us before ordering.
Will these parts carry over if I move to a 2011 or newer Super Duty?
Some will. 2011 brought the all-new third-generation Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke, yet many shocks, leveling kits and track bar parts here list 2005-2016 fitment. The complete BDS lift kits are a different story: they are listed for 2008-2010 trucks only. Check the year range in each title.
