Call or Text (352) 722-5295Traction bars on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
The rear of these Super Duty trucks is a Hotchkiss design, which means the leaf springs both carry the load and locate the axle. Ford made the rear springs longer than 66 in to stiffen them against windup, and the 2008 F-250 SRW runs a two-stage leaf pack over a full-floating axle. The front is a coil-sprung Dana 60 with radius arms and a track bar, so on this truck a traction bar is strictly a rear-axle part. The bar runs from a bracket on the frame to a mount at the axle and keeps the housing from rotating as the engine's torque, 650 lb-ft in F-250 and F-350 pickups, works against the springs.
When a traction bar makes sense
There is no documented factory failure here to fix. On a stock truck the long springs do the job. Owners add traction bars when they want the axle held square under hard pulls from a stop, instead of leaving all of that work to the leaf packs. If your truck tows light and lives on pavement, you may never need them. If you pull heavy loads from a stop on a regular basis, they're worth a look.
Universal bars or a truck-listed kit
WCFab's bars are universal. You can buy them as complete Dodge/Ford kits in 60-in and 68-in lengths, or buy the 68-in bars on their own and pair them with WCFab's bracket and hardware install kit. Universal means you set the bracket location to suit your wheelbase. The BDS Suspension Recoil kit is listed for short-bed 4WD Super Duty trucks, so it suits owners who want a kit called out for their configuration.
What we carry
Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab) builds the universal pieces here: Dodge/Ford universal traction bar kits in 60-in and 68-in lengths, universal 68-in bars, a Ford/Dodge/universal bracket and hardware install kit, and the WCF207-26 bushing and heim set for when the joints wear. BDS Suspension adds its Recoil traction bar kit for short-bed 4WD Super Duty trucks.
Fitment notes
These trucks came as Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab with a short box or an 8-ft box, on wheelbases from 137 in to 172.4 in, so bar length and bracket position change from truck to truck. The F-450 pickup came only as a dually crew cab with the 8-ft box. Check the fitment notes on each product, then verify by VIN. For engine-side parts, start at the Powerstroke hub.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the 60-inch or the 68-inch WCFab kit?
It depends on your cab, bed and wheelbase, which run from 137 in to 172.4 in on this generation. Measure from where the frame bracket will go to the axle mount and compare that to the kit lengths. If you're not sure, call the shop with your VIN and we'll help you pick.
Can I replace just the bushings and heims on WCFab bars?
Yes. WCFab sells the bushing and heim set as its own part, WCF207-26. That lets you refresh worn joints without replacing the bars.
Will traction bars cure front-end wobble on my 6.4L Super Duty?
No. Traction bars work on the rear axle only. Front-end wobble on 2008-2010 Super Duty trucks is tied to low factory caster and worn track-bar bushings, radius-arm bushings, ball joints and steering parts, so the fix is up front.
