2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Oil System Parts

This page covers engine oil, filters, oil pans, gaskets and oil system hardware for 2020-2022 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke. The one thing to know: DPF regens can wash fuel into the oil, which is why Ford ties oil changes to the oil life monitor and engine hours, not miles alone.

The oil system on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke holds 13.0 quarts with the filter on 2011-2022 pickups. Ford specifies SAE 10W-30 Super Duty diesel oil meeting WSS-M2C171-F1, a CK-4-era spec, above 0 F, and 5W-40 for colder weather. For severe duty, 5W-40 or 15W-40 is also listed. The Motorcraft filter is FL-2051S. The pistons on this engine are oil-cooled, so the oil does two jobs: it lubricates the moving parts, and it pulls heat out of the pistons.

What fails and why

The big one on every 6.7L year is fuel dilution, which owners call making oil. During a DPF regen the engine injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature, and some of it washes past the rings into the crankcase. Frequent short trips and long idle time make it worse, and so do interrupted regens. You will see the dipstick level creep up, the oil look thin, or a diesel smell in the oil. That is the reason Ford's schedule counts engine hours and oil life, not just miles. The oil system also feeds the crankcase vent. Oil mist passes through the valve cover breather into the charge-air side, so an oily intercooler is a CCV symptom before it is a turbo problem.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For oil and filters, factory spec is the goal. Pick a 10W-30 that lists Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 on the label for normal use, or a 5W-40 for cold or severe service. Ford's 2022 schedule changes it every 7,500 to 10,000 miles or when the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor says so, never past one year or 350 engine hours, and every 5,000 miles or 200 hours on severe duty. Additives and stabilizers are optional, and none of them replace a change. Oil pans are a different story. The Dorman lower pan is a stock replacement. The PPE heavy-duty cast aluminum pan and the Mag-Hytec diesel oil pan are the aftermarket options if your pan is damaged or you want to move away from the stock pan. Billet drain plugs and fill caps are small hardware upgrades.

Fitment notes

The 13-quart capacity applies to 2011-2022 pickups. The 2023 and newer engine takes 15 quarts, so do not fill by a newer truck's number. Most filters, pans, plugs and caps here are listed across 2011-2025 or 2011-2026 and cover your truck. The MAHLE lower pan gasket is listed for 2011-2022 and the vacuum pump gasket for 2017-2024, so both include 2020-2022. Oil itself is not a fitment question, but the spec on the label is, so match viscosity and the Ford spec to how you use the truck. If anything on a listing is unclear, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What oil should I run in a 2020-2022 6.7L Powerstroke?

Ford calls for SAE 10W-30 meeting WSS-M2C171-F1 above 0 F and 5W-40 for colder use. For severe duty, 5W-40 or 15W-40 is also listed. Check the label for the Ford spec before you pour it in.

How often do I change the oil on my 2020-2022 F-250 or F-350?

Ford's 2022 schedule says every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or when the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor says so, and never past one year or 350 engine hours. Severe duty drops it to 5,000 miles or 200 hours. Short trips and idling push fuel into the oil, so lean toward the shorter interval if that is how you use the truck.

My oil level keeps rising. What is going on?

On the 6.7L, a rising dipstick with thin oil or a diesel smell points to fuel dilution from DPF regens. It happens on all years and gets worse with short trips and idling. Change the oil and keep to the oil life monitor and engine hour limits from then on.

Do I need an aftermarket oil pan?

Only if your pan is damaged or you want to move away from the stock pan. The Dorman lower pan is a stock replacement, and the PPE cast aluminum pan and the Mag-Hytec pan are the aftermarket choices. Plan on a new MAHLE lower pan gasket with any pan swap, and the XDP bolt kit if your old hardware is tired.
