2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Short & Long Blocks

This page is for short block and long block replacements on 2020-2022 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke. Before anything else, know this: Ford reworked the block, pistons, rods and crank for 2020, so a replacement block has to be built for 2020-2022 internals, not borrowed from an older truck.

Short and long blocks for the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

A short block is the engine block with the crankshaft, rods and pistons installed. A long block adds the cylinder heads and valve train. On the third-generation 6.7L Powerstroke, those core parts changed for 2020. Ford strengthened the compacted graphite iron block and head castings, moved to forged steel short-skirt pistons, dropped compression from 16.2:1 to 15.8:1, and fitted strengthened powdered-metal fractured-cap rods with a new medium-carbon alloy steel crank. The assembled engine weighs roughly 990 lb dry and 1,100 lb wet, so a swap is a hoist-and-engine-stand job, not a driveway weekend.

When a block makes sense

This engine carries a B10 life rating of 500,000 miles, and its known weak point is the CP4.2 fuel pump rather than the rotating assembly. That means a block is not a routine part. Owners land here when an engine is damaged past the point of a repair, when a high-mileage truck is due for a rebuild, or when they want a fresh bottom end to build on. Before you commit to a block, get the engine diagnosed so you know what failed and why. Putting a new block behind the same root cause just repeats the failure.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A block replacement can go two ways. An OE-style block puts the engine back to factory spec for a work truck or tow rig. A built block uses prepared parts for an engine that will see more than stock duty. The SPE Motorsport OE+ short block is the option in this collection; read the product page for exactly what SPE changes from stock and what is included. Either way, plan the rest of the job at the same time: head fasteners, gaskets, oil and a filter for the first fill, all of which are on the other engine pages for your truck.

What we carry

Right now this collection holds the SPE Motorsport S100241 OE+ Short Block, listed for 2011-2023 6.7L Power Stroke engines. For the parts that go with it, check the heads and studs, oil system and valve cover pages for your 2020-2022 truck.

Fitment notes

The SPE listing spans 2011-2023, but Ford changed the internals and castings for 2020, and short and long blocks do not interchange across that line. Call us before you order so we can confirm the build matches a 2020-2022 engine. The 2023 High-Output engine is a separate case, with 15.2:1 compression, stainless manifolds and a water-jacketed compressor housing, so a 2020-2022 long block is not an HO part. Chassis cab engines use a different turbo and calibration, and engine assemblies are VIN-specific. Have your VIN ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 2011-2019 short block in my 2020-2022 truck?

Not as a straight swap. For 2020 Ford changed the pistons, rods, crank, block and heads, and dropped compression from 16.2:1 to 15.8:1. Short blocks and long blocks are not interchangeable across that split, even though displacement and the bolt pattern are the same family.

What is the difference between a short block and a long block?

A short block is the block with the crank, rods and pistons. A long block adds the cylinder heads and valve train. On a 2020-2022 6.7L the heads were strengthened along with the block, so if you go long block, both halves need to match these years.

Will an engine from a 2020-2022 chassis cab work in my pickup?

Do not assume it. Chassis cab 6.7L engines are rated 330 hp and 825 lb-ft with a different turbo and calibration than the 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft pickup, and engine assemblies are VIN-specific. Give us both VINs and we will check.
