2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Exhaust Parts

This is the exhaust system collection for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke. Every one of these trucks left the factory with a DOC, an SCR catalyst with DEF injection and a DPF. The parts here are built to work with that hardware: manifolds, up-pipes, downpipes, sensors, gaskets, DPF-back systems, mufflers and tips.

Exhaust system on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke runs reverse-flow heads, so the exhaust ports face into the valley between the cylinder banks. Cast manifolds sit in that valley under the turbo, and short up-pipes feed a Garrett GT3788V variable-geometry turbo on pickups. Chassis cabs use a ball-bearing Garrett GT3582V instead. From the turbo, the downpipe carries exhaust back to the aftertreatment under the cab. Ford's order is the DOC first, closest to the engine, then the SCR catalyst where DEF is injected, then a silicon-carbide DPF. The DPF burns off soot on its own above roughly 572 degrees F exhaust temperature. When it needs help, an active regen injects extra fuel to push exhaust temperature past 1,000 degrees F. Pickups carry a 7.4-gallon DEF tank and chassis cabs a 7.2-gallon tank. The exhaust brake is built into the turbo: the variable vanes do the work, and you pick On, Off or Auto from the cab.

What fails and why

The hard part to watch is the exhaust manifold. Factory cast manifolds on 2015-2019 pickups and 2017-2019 chassis cabs can crack from heat cycling, mostly on worked or high-mile trucks. The signs are an exhaust leak tick at idle, soot around the manifold flanges and broken studs. Since broken studs come with the territory, plan on new studs and gaskets along with the manifold.

The rest of the trouble depends on how the truck is driven. Active regen only completes above roughly 35 mph, so a truck that idles or crawls all day keeps loading the DPF with soot and can dilute its oil with fuel. Frequent regen messages and a rising oil level are the tells. Many owners also report rough running during an active regen; Hot Shot's Secret attributes much of that to injector deposits and sticking injectors rather than the DPF itself. On 2017-2018 trucks, a DEF gauge stuck on full is a known issue. Ford TSB 18-2278 fixes it with a PCM reprogram, which also resets the transmission adaptives, so shifts feel firm for a few days.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

When a manifold cracks, you can replace just the bad side or step up to a thick-wall kit. BD Diesel's 1043008 kit uses 0.275-inch walls and longer studs, carries CARB EO D-553-17, and covers 2015-2019 pickups and 2017-2019 cab-chassis trucks. Behind the aftertreatment, the compliant upgrade is a DPF-back system that keeps every factory emissions device in place. The Banks Monster 49795 runs 5-inch 409 stainless from the DPF outlet back, Banks rates it at 82 percent less backpressure than stock, and Banks states no CARB EO is required for it. If your truck spends a lot of time idling, the factory operator-commanded regen, where equipped, helps regens finish. Ford lists it as standard on 2019 XL diesel trucks.

What we carry

For the tailpipe end of the exhaust, MBRP supplies Armor Lite, Armor Plus and Armor BLK filter-back systems in 4-inch and 5-inch, single and dual exit, along with universal mufflers, resonators, adapters and a wide range of tips. Banks Power adds the Monster 49795 5-inch single-exit system. On the hot side, BD Diesel and SPE Motorsport offer exhaust manifolds, flanges and adapters, Pacific Performance Engineering offers high-flow up-pipes, and No Limit Fabrication and SPE offer stainless downpipes. Mahle and Dorman cover gaskets and hardware: manifold gasket sets, manifold hardware kits, up-pipe and tailpipe gaskets, downpipe V-band clamps, and gaskets for the factory EGR cooler and valve. Alliant Power and XDP supply particulate-matter, back-pressure and EGT sensors. Mishimoto adds heat wrap and tips, and ATS Diesel Performance has a 45mm wastegate adapter.

Fitment notes

DPF-back systems are cab and bed specific. The Banks 49795 fits 2017-up F-250, F-350 and F-450 single- and dual-rear-wheel trucks in SuperCab and Crew Cab, short or long bed, but not the Regular Cab long bed. Chassis cabs route their exhaust differently and need cab-chassis-specific parts, so chassis-cab owners should confirm every part before ordering. Year ranges vary by part. Several manifold and up-pipe parts list 2015-2019 or 2011-2019, while many MBRP systems and the Banks system are listed for 2017 through later model years. Read the year range in each product title, and verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Will a DPF-back exhaust change my DPF or SCR?

No. A DPF-back system replaces only the piping behind the DPF and SCR assembly and keeps all factory emissions devices on the truck. The Banks 49795 starts at the DPF outlet, and Banks states no CARB EO is required for it. Check each MBRP system's product page for its own fitment details.

Why does my 6.7L keep running regens?

Active regen only completes above roughly 35 mph. If the truck idles or crawls in traffic most of the day, the regen can't finish, soot keeps building and the messages keep coming. That pattern can also push fuel into the oil, so keep an eye on the oil level. A sustained drive at speed, or the factory operator-commanded regen where your truck has it, helps the cycle finish.

How do I know if an exhaust manifold is cracked?

Listen for an exhaust leak tick at idle, look for soot at the manifold flanges and check for broken studs. Those are the usual signs on 2015-2019 pickups and 2017-2019 chassis cabs, mostly on trucks that work hard or have high miles. The manifolds sit in the valley under the turbo, so call the shop if you want help pinning it down before you buy parts.

My DEF gauge always reads full. Is the sender bad?

Not necessarily. On 2017-2018 6.7L trucks, a DEF gauge that reads full regardless of level is covered by Ford TSB 18-2278, and the fix is a PCM reprogram. The reprogram also resets transmission adaptives, so expect firmer shifts for a few days afterward.

Does the 2017-2019 6.7L have a factory exhaust brake?

Yes. A driver-controlled exhaust brake with On, Off and Auto settings is standard on the 6.7L. It works through the variable-geometry turbo's vanes, and you choose the mode from the cab.
