2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Oil System Parts

Engine oil, oil filters, oil pans, gaskets, oil coolers, drain plugs and additives for the 2015-2016 F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke. The thing to know: active DPF regeneration puts fuel in the oil on this engine, so how often you change it matters as much as which oil you pour in.

The oil system on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

A gerotor oil pump in the front cover feeds the engine, and capacity is 13.0 quarts with the filter. The factory filter is Motorcraft FL-2124S, which supersedes FL-2051S; it uses synthetic media, carries 21% more filter mass and has a silicone anti-drainback valve. For 2012-2016 Ford's oil spec is WSS-M2C171-E, which Ford treats as API CJ-4. Viscosity depends on how you use the truck and how cold it gets: 10W-30 above 0°F for normal driving, 5W-40 above -20°F for towing, severe duty and biodiesel, and 15W-40 above 20°F. The rest of our Ford diesel parts are on the Powerstroke hub.

What fails and why: fuel dilution

When the DPF loads with soot, the engine runs an active regeneration and post-injects fuel to heat the exhaust. Some of that fuel ends up in the crankcase. Every 6.7L does it, and trucks that idle, make short trips or work stop-and-go get the worst of it. The signs are an oil level that rises on the dipstick, oil that looks thin and a fuel smell in the oil. Oil analysis gives you the real number: up to 5% fuel between changes is considered normal, above 5% is abnormal and above 7% is severe. Extended drains on a regen-heavy truck let the oil thin out further, which is why the change interval matters so much here.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Ford allows up to 10,000 miles between changes under normal use and 5,000 under severe use. Diesel Hub recommends holding to 5,000 miles on this engine unless you run oil analysis, and using a 5W-40 when you tow, work the truck hard or run biodiesel. That interval change is the most useful upgrade in this collection. Beyond oil, the upgrades are hardware: the PPE heavy-duty cast aluminum pan, the Mag-Hytec pan, billet and magnetic drain plugs, and a Mishimoto performance oil cooler. For a stock repair, the Dorman lower pan, the Mishimoto replacement cooler and the Mahle gaskets and cooler mounting kit put things back to factory form.

Fitment notes

Most oil-system parts span the 6.7L years, but not all. The Mahle OS32478 upper oil pan gasket set and the SPE upper pan gasket are listed 2015-2019, while the Mahle OS32438 lower pan gasket covers 2011-2022. The Alliant Power oil pressure sensor is listed 2011-2016, and the Mishimoto magnetic drain plug lists 2012-2016 for the 6.7L. Some oils here, like the 5W-20 and 20W-50 racing grades and the 0W-20 light-duty oil, fall outside the viscosities Ford lists for this engine. For a street truck, stick with 10W-30, 5W-40 or 15W-40 by temperature and duty. Verify by VIN if you are unsure of your truck's build.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil does a 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke take?

It takes 13.0 quarts with the filter. That is a quart more than three gallons, so buy accordingly. Note where the level sits on the dipstick after a fresh change, because a level that climbs later is your first clue to fuel dilution.

Should I run 10W-30 or 5W-40?

Ford lists 10W-30 for normal use above 0°F and 5W-40 above -20°F for towing, severe duty and biodiesel, with 15W-40 acceptable above 20°F. If your truck tows or runs biodiesel, Ford puts it in the 5W-40 column. Whichever you pick, check the jug against the Ford spec for these years, WSS-M2C171-E.

How do I know if fuel dilution is a problem on my truck?

Watch the dipstick. An oil level that climbs between changes, thin oil or a fuel smell all point to it. Oil analysis gives you a percentage: up to 5% is considered normal and above 7% is severe. If your numbers run high, move to 5,000-mile changes and keep sampling.

Which oil filter fits my truck?

The factory filter is Motorcraft FL-2124S, which replaced FL-2051S. In this collection, the PPE MicroPure XR and the Mahle OC1662 are both listed for the 6.7L Powerstroke from 2011 on. Swap the filter at every oil change.
