Call or Text (352) 722-5295Servicing and rebuilding the 5R110W in a 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Behind the 6.4L in most F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty trucks sits the 5R110W TorqShift, a five-speed automatic Ford used from 2003 through 2010. It runs Motorcraft MERCON SP, 17.5 quarts total, on a 30,000-mile service interval. The parts that see the most attention are the solenoid body, torque converter, pump, valve body, the TSS and OSS speed sensors, the filter and the fluid. The rest of this collection is about keeping heat down and holding up to towing: coolers, deeper pans and tow-rated flex plates. Engine-side parts live on the Powerstroke hub.
What wears out
The factory torque converter has a stamped-steel shell and a single-disc lockup clutch. It slips, shudders and sheds debris that scores the pump and plugs the valve body and cooler, and it can set P0740 or P0741. Heat does the rest. Damage risk rises above about 200 F, and a stuck cooler bypass valve is a confirmed cause of running hot. Long-term heat burns the clutch packs and the forward and direct drums, and codes P0731 through P0735 point to internal slip. If shift trouble traces to the solenoids, the standard repair is a complete solenoid body, not one solenoid at a time.
Repair, refresh or build
A refresh is a filter, the right fluid and a relearn. A repair after a converter failure means a new converter, a new cooler and a flush, because the old cooler holds debris and can void the warranty on the new parts. A build goes further: a heavy-duty multi-disc billet converter, a complete solenoid body and a system flush, plus hard parts like billet shafts if the unit is coming apart anyway. If you tow, add an auxiliary cooler and a temperature gauge. If the truck hunts gears on grades, a TapShifter lets you hold the gear and keep the heat down.
What we carry
From BD Diesel: Multi-Disc and Torqforce torque converters, a billet flex plate, filter kits, a deep sump pan, Xtruded auxiliary and double-stacked coolers, an electric cooler fan and the TapShifter. From ATS Diesel Performance: a 5R110 master rebuild kit and billet input and intermediate shafts. Mishimoto supplies a vehicle-specific 6.4L transmission cooler, universal fluid coolers, a cooler with fan and a transmission pan. XDP MFG has Tow Series and Billet Tow and Race flex plates, a flex plate bolt kit and a modified direct clutch solenoid. Pacific Performance Engineering makes a heavy-duty aluminum deep pan and the deep filter that goes with it, and Mag-Hytec makes a transmission pan listed for the 6.4L. Fluid and a shift additive come from Hot Shot's Secret, with a multi-vehicle ATF from Lucas Oil. Rounding it out are an Alliant Power fluid temperature sensor and a Mahle transfer case gasket.
Fitment notes
Most parts here are listed for 2008-2010 trucks, and many also cover the 2003-2007 6.0L because both engines used the 5R110W. Read the year range in each title. The XDP XD651 flex plate is listed for the 6.6L Duramax, not the 6.4L. Universal coolers need a mounting spot and line routing planned for your truck. The PPE deep filter is made for use with the PPE deep pan. ZF six-speed manual trucks use none of the 5R110W hard parts, and the 5R110W hard parts do not carry into the 2011 Super Duty and its 6R140. Never mix MERCON SP and MERCON LV. Verify by VIN when unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace one solenoid or the whole solenoid body?
For a shift complaint that traces to the solenoids, the standard repair on the 5R110W is the complete solenoid body, not individual solenoids. A single part like the XDP XD306 modified direct clutch solenoid makes sense when you or your transmission shop have a specific reason to change that one piece. Either way, the transmission needs a relearn afterward.
What do codes P0731 through P0735 mean on a 6.4L?
They point to internal slip in the 5R110W. If the truck has also run hot or shows rpm flare without acceleration, burned clutch packs and drums are a real possibility, and that is rebuild territory. Check whether the fluid is dark or burnt, then call us before you buy parts.
What should I replace along with a torque converter?
Replace the transmission cooler, since the failed converter's debris sits in it. If you are moving to a heavy-duty multi-disc converter, the full upgrade pairs it with a complete solenoid body and a system flush. The transmission has to come out for the converter, so it is also the time to decide on a flex plate.
Can I use any filter with a deep pan?
Not always. PPE makes its 328051050 deep filter for use with the PPE deep pan, so match the filter to the pan you run. The BD filter kits are listed for 2008-2010 and 2003-2010 Power Stroke trucks; check each pan's listing for the filter it calls for.
