2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Transmission Pans

This page holds replacement transmission pans for 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the 6.4L Powerstroke and the 5R110W TorqShift automatic. Know this about the TorqShift: heat is what hurts it under tow. Damage risk climbs above about 200 F, and chronic overheating burns clutch packs. A pan swap is a good time to check the fluid and service it on Ford's schedule.

Transmission pans on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Most 2008-2010 Super Dutys with the 6.4L came with the 5R110W TorqShift, a five-speed heavy-duty automatic Ford used from 2003 through 2010 behind both the 6.0L and the 6.4L. Ford's fluid spec for these years is MERCON SP, 17.5 quarts total, on a 30,000-mile interval for normal and severe duty. Dropping the pan is how you reach the filter, which sits on the list of common 5R110W service parts along with the solenoid body, pump, valve body and the TSS and OSS speed sensors. Because the 5R110W ran behind both engines, several pans here list 6.0L fitment too, and a few list years back to 1994.

What to watch for when the pan comes off

Pans aren't on the list of known 5R110W trouble spots. What matters is the fluid that comes out. Dark or burnt fluid is one of the overheating symptoms on the 5R110W, along with trans temp warnings, limp mode and lost pulling power on grades. A stuck cooler bypass valve is a confirmed cause, and damage risk rises above about 200 F. Heat that goes on long enough burns the clutch packs and the forward and direct drums. Another known trouble spot is the stock stamped-steel converter: it can slip and shed debris that scores the pump and plugs the valve body and cooler. Gear hunting on grades, where the transmission keeps shifting up and down, adds heat of its own.

Choosing the right pan

Every pan in this collection is an aftermarket design, and several titles call out deep, deep-sump or heavy-duty aluminum construction. A deeper pan is built to hold more fluid than a stock-depth pan, so check each product page for how much it adds and for its fill instructions. A pan isn't a substitute for cooling, though. The upgrades aimed straight at towing heat on this transmission are an auxiliary or upgraded transmission cooler and a temperature gauge. Gear hunting on grades is a shift-strategy issue rather than wear, and the heat it builds won't be solved by a bigger pan.

What we carry

Pans here come from Pacific Performance Engineering, Mishimoto, Mag-Hytec, BD Diesel and ATS Diesel Performance. PPE's heavy-duty aluminum 5R110 deep pan covers 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L trucks. Mishimoto's MMTP-F2D-89 is listed for 1994-2010 7.3L, 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke trucks. The Mag-Hytec F5R110W is listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L. BD's 1061716 deep sump pan lists 1994-2010 Powerstroke fitment, and the ATS 301-900-3104 deep pan names the E4OD, 4R100 and 5R110 for 1994-2010 trucks. ATS also offers its 402-009-1000 drain plug, made to fit ATS pans and differential covers. For everything else on this engine, go to the Powerstroke hub.

Fitment notes

These pans fit the 5R110W automatic. Trucks with the ZF six-speed manual, which runs MERCON V, don't use them. Several titles span years and engines beyond the 6.4L, so confirm your truck by VIN with the fitment checker or call the shop before you order. If you're adding the ATS drain plug, make sure it's going into an ATS pan. Refill with the fluid named on your dipstick or in the owner's guide, never mix MERCON SP and MERCON LV, and plan a relearn after the fluid service.

Frequently asked questions

What fluid goes back in after a pan swap on a 2008-2010 6.4L?

Ford specifies MERCON SP for the 2008-2010 5R110W, 17.5 quarts total, changed every 30,000 miles. Go by the fluid named on your dipstick or in the owner's guide, and never mix MERCON SP with MERCON LV. A deep pan adds capacity, so follow the pan maker's fill instructions to get the level right.

Does the TorqShift need a relearn after I service the fluid?

Yes. The 5R110W uses adaptive learning, and a relearn is required after fluid service or a solenoid-body replacement. Build it into the job along with the fluid, the filter and the new pan, and have it done before the truck goes back to towing.

Will a deep pan keep my transmission from overheating when I tow?

Don't count on a pan alone. Overheating under tow on this transmission traces to things like a stuck cooler bypass valve, and damage risk rises above about 200 F. The upgrades aimed at towing heat are an auxiliary or upgraded transmission cooler and a temperature gauge so you can watch it. Treat the pan as a companion to those, not a replacement for them.
