2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Transmission Fluid

This collection covers transmission fluid and a shift additive for 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The factory fill for the 5R110W automatic is Motorcraft MERCON SP, and the rule that matters most is simple: go by the dipstick or owner's guide, and never mix MERCON SP with MERCON LV.

Transmission fluid for the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Across 6.4L trucks there are three different drivetrain fluids, depending on how the truck is equipped, and each has its own spec. The 5R110W TorqShift automatic takes Motorcraft MERCON SP (XT-6-QSP), 17.5 quarts total, with a 30,000-mile service interval. Some rebuilders note that late units may specify MERCON LV, which is why the dipstick or owner's guide is the final word. The ZF six-speed manual runs MERCON V, 5.8 quarts. On 4x4 trucks the transfer case takes MERCON LV, 2.0 quarts. For everything else on this engine, see the Powerstroke hub.

Why fluid matters on this transmission

Heat is hard on a 5R110W. The safe range runs about 175 to 200 F, and damage risk rises above about 200 F. Dark or burnt fluid is one of the warning signs, along with a trans temp warning and limp mode. Chronic heat burns clutch packs and drums. Fresh fluid will not fix a failing torque converter, which sheds debris into the pump, valve body and cooler, but checking the fluid is the easiest way to catch trouble early. After a fluid service, the transmission needs a relearn because it uses adaptive learning.

Choosing a fluid

Match the spec named on the product to the spec your truck calls for. The Blue Diamond ATF+4/DEXRON III/MERCON V fluid names MERCON V, the spec for the ZF manual. The Blue Diamond Dexron VI and Mercon LV fluid names MERCON LV, the spec for the transfer case. The Type F and G56 fluids name other specs and are not MERCON SP products. For the ADRENALINE fluids and the Lucas multi-vehicle ATF, check each listing for the specs it meets. If a listing does not name the spec your transmission calls for, call us before you pour it in.

What we carry

Hot Shot's Secret fluids in gallon jugs: ADRENALINE Nano Shift, ADRENALINE Speed Shift and ADRENALINE Pro Shift +4, plus Blue Diamond Type F, Blue Diamond G56 Severe Duty SAE 50, Blue Diamond ATF+4/DEXRON III/MERCON V, and Blue Diamond Dexron VI and Mercon LV. Hot Shot's Secret also makes Shift Restore, a transmission fluid additive. Lucas Oil 10418 is a multi-vehicle automatic transmission fluid.

Fitment notes

Fluid is not a truck-specific part, so fitment comes down to the spec. Check the dipstick or owner's guide before you buy, and never mix MERCON SP and MERCON LV in the same transmission. Total capacity is 17.5 quarts for the 5R110W, 5.8 quarts for the ZF manual and 2.0 quarts for the transfer case. Verify by VIN if you are unsure which transmission is in the truck.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix MERCON SP and MERCON LV?

No. Identify which one your 5R110W uses before you service it, and stick with it. The factory spec for 2008-2010 is MERCON SP, but some rebuilders note late units may call for LV, so the dipstick or owner's guide settles it.

What do the manual transmission and transfer case take?

The ZF six-speed manual takes MERCON V, 5.8 quarts. The 4x4 transfer case takes MERCON LV, 2.0 quarts. Those are separate from the MERCON SP in the automatic, so buy for each one by its own spec.

Do I need a relearn after changing the fluid?

Yes. The 5R110W uses adaptive learning, and a relearn is called for after a fluid service. The fluid interval is 30,000 miles under both normal and severe use.
