The 5R110W behind the 6.4L holds 17.5 quarts of Motorcraft MERCON SP, and the service interval for that fluid is 30,000 miles. The filter is one of the standard service parts on this transmission, and it matters here. The factory torque converter sheds debris as it wears, and that debris scores the pump and plugs the valve body and cooler. Changing the filter with every fluid service is the easy part of keeping this transmission healthy. For the rest of the truck, start at the Powerstroke hub.
Choosing a filter
Start with the pan. With the factory pan, a filter kit listed for your year is the straightforward choice. If you run a PPE heavy-duty deep pan, use the PPE 328051050 deep filter built for it. Then plan the whole service, not just the filter: the right fluid, the filter and a relearn afterward, since this transmission uses adaptive learning. Buy fluid that matches the dipstick or owner's guide, and never mix MERCON SP with MERCON LV. If the old fluid comes out dark or burnt, treat it as a heat warning and look at cooling before you button it back up.

Fitment notes
These filters are for the 5R110W automatic only; trucks with the ZF six-speed manual do not use them. The 2003-2010 listings also fit the 6.0L, which used the same transmission. Nothing here fits the 2011-and-later Super Duty with the 6R140. Verify by VIN if you are not sure what is in your truck.

How often should I change the transmission filter on a 6.4L?
The service interval for the 5R110W's MERCON SP is 30,000 miles under both normal and severe use, and the filter goes in with the fluid. If the fluid comes out dark or burnt, treat that as a heat warning and look at cooling. After the service, the transmission needs a relearn.
Which filter do I need if I run a PPE deep pan?
Use the PPE 328051050 deep filter, which is made for the PPE deep pan. With the factory pan or another brand's pan, check the pan's listing for the filter it calls for, or call us with your truck's details.
Do I need a relearn after a filter change?
Yes, plan on it. The 5R110W uses adaptive learning, and a relearn is called for after a fluid service. It is part of the job, not an extra.
