Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolers and hard parts for the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
This part of the catalog handles two jobs on the 5R110W TorqShift: keeping the fluid cool and putting the transmission back together right. Behind the 6.4L, the 5R110W handles up to 650 lb-ft in F-250 and F-350 pickups, and towing keeps it under load for long stretches. Everything here either helps the truck stay in its safe temperature range, measures it, or replaces a hard part inside the unit. Engine parts for this truck are on the Powerstroke hub.
What fails and why
A stuck cooler bypass valve is a confirmed cause of overheating, with a trans temp warning, limp mode, dark or burnt fluid and lost pulling power on grades. The factory single-disc torque converter adds to the problem: as it slips, it sheds debris that scores the pump and plugs the valve body and the cooler itself. Chronic heat then burns the clutch packs and the forward and direct drums, and the main pump gear can shatter. Codes P0731 through P0735 point to internal slip. Towing on grades also brings gear hunting and unstable lockup, a shift-strategy issue that builds heat.
Cooling first, then hard parts
For a truck that tows, an auxiliary transmission cooler and a temperature gauge are the standard pair. If the converter or transmission has just been replaced, the cooler gets replaced too, because the old one holds debris from the failure and can void the warranty on the new parts. If gear hunting on grades is the heat source, the BD TapShifter gives you manual gear control so you can hold a gear. When the unit is coming apart, the usual service parts are the solenoid body, torque converter, pump, valve body, TSS and OSS speed sensors, filter and fluid. Replace the solenoid body as a unit rather than chasing single solenoids, and plan on a relearn afterward.
What we carry
Mishimoto offers the MMTC-F2D-08SL transmission cooler listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks, plus universal fluid coolers in several core sizes, a heavy-duty cooler with fan and a universal transmission and power steering cooler. BD Diesel offers Xtruded auxiliary and double-stacked coolers, the 1030606 auxiliary cooler, an electric cooler fan and the 1031370 TapShifter for 2008-2010 Power Stroke trucks. ATS Diesel Performance brings a 5R110 master rebuild kit and billet input and intermediate shafts. XDP MFG has the XD306 modified direct clutch solenoid. You will also find the Alliant Power AP63497 transmission fluid temperature sensor and the Mahle B33590 transfer case gasket.
Fitment notes
The universal coolers are not truck-specific, so plan where the core mounts and how the lines run before you order. The Mishimoto MMTC-F2D-08SL and the BD TapShifter are listed for 2008-2010 trucks. The ATS shafts and rebuild kit, the XDP solenoid and the Alliant sensor also cover the 6.0L because both engines used the 5R110W. The Mahle transfer case gasket applies to 4x4 trucks only. None of the 5R110W internals fit the ZF six-speed manual or the 2011-and-later 6R140. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the 6.4L-specific Mishimoto cooler or a universal one?
The MMTC-F2D-08SL is listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks, so it is the one built around your truck. Universal coolers from Mishimoto and BD let you choose core size and add a fan or a stacked core, but you plan the mounting and lines. If you tow heavy, pair any cooler with a transmission temperature gauge.
What does the BD TapShifter do?
It gives you manual control of gear selection on the 5R110W. On a 6.4L that hunts gears and cycles the converter lockup when towing on grades, holding a gear stops the hunting and the heat that comes with it. It is listed for 2008-2010 Power Stroke trucks.
Can I reuse my old transmission cooler after a converter failure?
No. A failed converter sheds debris that ends up in the cooler, and reusing it can send that debris into the new parts and void the warranty. Replace the cooler whenever the converter or transmission is replaced.
