2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Fuel System Parts

Fuel system parts for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: lift pumps, filtration, additives, rail fittings, lines and tank parts. The one thing every EcoDiesel owner should know is that the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump is under NHTSA recall 22V-406, and clean, water-free fuel at the 3-micron rating FCA specifies is the cheapest insurance you can buy for it.

Fuel system on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel is a VM Motori-built 60-degree V6, and its fuel system is modern common rail from tank to tip. An electric lift-pump module sits inside the tank with the fuel level sender built in. It pushes fuel forward to an engine-mounted filter and water separator that has a bottom drain, a water-in-fuel sensor and a 12-volt heater to fight gelling. From there, a Bosch CP4.2 twin-plunger pump, gear-driven off the exhaust camshaft, builds up to 2,000 bar, about 29,000 psi, in two rails that feed solenoid injectors, one per cylinder.

FCA keeps the rules short. Run ultra-low sulfur diesel only, stay at B5 or below for everyday use, and use a fuel filter that meets a 3-micron rating. The owner guide warns that a filter that misses the filtration and water-separation spec can severely impact fuel system life. On a truck with a CP4.2, take that warning literally.

What fails and why

The CP4.2 is the headline. NHTSA recall 22V-406, FCA campaign Z46, covers 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels for pump failures that shed metal debris into the rails, injectors and return lines. Owner complaints describe hard starts, stalling, loss of power, a check engine light and metal shavings in the fuel pressure regulator or filter. Those complaints cluster between about 116,000 and 240,000 miles, but a failure can happen at any mileage, and some owners report repeat failures after the recall repair. The recall procedure replaces the pump and inspects or replaces contaminated rails, injectors and lines, not just the pump.

Water is the next threat. When the Water In Fuel message and chime come on, drain the separator before you start the engine again. In cold country, gelled fuel shows up as long cranking, a no-start or lost power. Two tank items round out the list. Recall 17V-434 replaced 2017 Ram 1500 fuel tanks with a broken control valve that could leak fuel if the truck ended up inverted. And NHTSA complaints from some 2015-2016 owners describe corroded tank straps letting the tank sag, mostly on rust-belt trucks.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For most EcoDiesels, the best upgrade is discipline. Keep 3-micron filtration on schedule and drain the separator at every oil change. That is FCA's own recommendation and the cheapest CP4.2 insurance there is. Follow the fuel filter interval in your owner guide and never stretch it on this engine.

If you want more supply margin, there are two routes. The Fleece PowerFlo is a drop-in replacement for the factory in-tank module, part numbers 68161407AB/AE and 68217575AE, with twin gerotor pumps rated at 68-70 psi, an integral level sender and no tank modification. Frame-mounted lift pump and filtration systems from FASS and AirDog add their own water separator and particulate filters ahead of the engine. Either way, keep the factory engine-mounted filter in service at the 3-micron rating.

What we carry

FASS covers the Titanium Signature Series and No-Drop Series 140F 110GPH systems listed for the 2014-2019 EcoDiesel, plus Extreme Water Separator filters, an extended-length particulate filter and filter packs. AirDog brings 150GPH Universal Raptor pumps, a low-pressure indicator light, 2-micron and 10-micron replacement filters and a WS100 water separator. Fleece Performance Engineering supplies the PowerFlo in-tank lift pump, the SureFlo performance sending unit and a black anodized billet fuel cap. Exergy Performance handles high-pressure rail plugs, unions, tees and supply fittings, along with its diesel additive in regular and Winter Blend.

You will also find Dynomite Diesel universal oversized high-pressure injection lines, XDP fuel tank sumps and Diesel Power Plus additive, Merchant Automotive diesel fuel additive, a MAHLE injection pump mounting gasket, and PPE billet fuel and DEF caps. For more supply-side options, browse our lift pumps and fuel additives pages.

Fitment notes

Everything here is for the Ram 1500 half-ton with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 on the DS body. None of it is for Ram 2500 or 3500 trucks. Parts for 2014-2018 EcoDiesels and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic generally interchange. The 2020-and-later DT Ram 1500 uses a redesigned third-generation EcoDiesel, and its parts generally do not.

Lift-pump kits can be cab-specific. At least one frame-mounted kit for this truck fits Crew Cab only, so confirm your cab and your tank: 26 gallons standard, 32 gallons optional on Quad and Crew Cab and standard on the Regular Cab 8-foot box. Your truck left the factory with a capless filler, so read each billet cap's product page for how it fits. The DEF filler sits right beside the fuel filler behind the driver-side door. Never put additives, diesel or gasoline in the DEF tank; contamination means replacing the entire DEF system. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Is my 2014-2017 EcoDiesel covered by the CP4.2 recall?

Recall 22V-406, FCA campaign Z46, covers 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels, and Ram owner notices began going out in March 2024. Run your VIN through a recall lookup or ask a Ram dealer whether the work is done. The repair replaces the high-pressure pump and inspects or replaces contaminated parts. Some owners report repeat failures afterward, so filtration and water draining still matter.

What fuel can I run in a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?

Ultra-low sulfur diesel, 15 ppm, only. FCA allows up to B5 biodiesel for routine use. B6 through B20 is only for areas where the state mandates it, and then the fuel should be used within 15 days and oil and fuel-filter service drops to 8,000 miles.

Do I still need the factory fuel filter if I add a FASS or AirDog system?

Yes. FCA requires a 3-micron filter that meets its water-separation spec on the engine, and a frame-mounted system cleans fuel before it gets there. Treat the aftermarket unit as an added layer. Keep servicing the engine-mounted filter and draining its separator.

What should I do when the Water In Fuel light comes on?

Drain the engine-mounted filter and water separator through its bottom drain before you start the engine again. The owner guide is clear on that. When you replace the filter, install the new one dry, because pre-filling it risks introducing debris.

Does my EcoDiesel need a winter fuel treatment?

FCA recommends a Mopar diesel fuel treatment, or an equivalent, below 20 F when winterized or No. 1 ULSD is not available. The truck also has a 12-volt heater in the filter housing to help against gelling. Exergy Winter Blend and other diesel treatments are in this collection.
