The injection pump on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel's high-pressure pump is a Bosch CP4.2, a twin-plunger design driven gear-to-gear off the exhaust camshaft. It takes fuel from the electric in-tank lift pump after that fuel passes the engine-mounted 3-micron filter and water separator. Then it builds up to 2,000 bar, about 29,000 psi, for two common rails and the solenoid injectors. Everything downstream depends on it, and the parts upstream are what keep it fed with clean fuel.

What fails and why

The CP4.2 can fail internally and shed metal debris into the rails, injectors and return lines, causing fuel starvation and loss of power. NHTSA recall 22V-406 covers 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels along with 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0L diesels, and Ram owner notices went out from March 2024. Owners describe hard starts, stalling, loss of power, a check engine light and metal shavings in the fuel pressure regulator or filter. Complaints run from about 116,000 to 240,000 miles, but a failure can come at any mileage, and some owners report repeat failures after the recall repair.

Repair, replace or protect

Under the recall, the dealer replaces the high-pressure pump and inspects or replaces contaminated components. Whoever does the work, the rule is the same: after a CP4.2 failure, check every fuel-system part for debris before it goes back in service, including rails, injectors and lines. Any time the pump comes off the engine, seal it with a new mounting gasket rather than reusing the old one.

Protection costs less than repair. Low supply pressure and contaminated fuel are commonly cited stressors for CP4-family pumps, so keep the lift pump healthy and run filtration at the 3-micron rating FCA requires. Drain the separator at every oil change. That is FCA's own recommendation and the cheapest CP4.2 insurance there is.

What we carry

This collection carries the MAHLE G33616 fuel injection pump mounting gasket, listed for the 2014-2019 3.0L EcoDiesel. It is the seal you need when the high-pressure pump comes off and goes back on. For the parts that feed the pump, see the lift pump and filtration collections for this truck.

Fitment notes

The G33616 is listed for 2014-2019 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. That covers the 2014-2017 DS-body Ram 1500 on this page, plus the same engine in 2018 trucks and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. The 2020-and-later DT Ram 1500 runs a redesigned third-generation EcoDiesel, and its parts generally do not interchange. Nothing here fits a Ram 2500 or 3500. Verify by VIN before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CP4.2 on my 2014-2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel under recall?

Recall 22V-406, FCA campaign Z46, covers 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels. Check your VIN with a Ram dealer or a recall lookup to see whether the work is open or complete.

Can I just swap the pump after a CP4.2 failure?

Not without checking the rest of the system. A failed CP4.2 can push metal into the rails, injectors and return lines. FCA's recall procedure inspects and replaces contaminated components, not just the pump, and a repair outside the recall should follow the same logic.

How do I protect the CP4.2 on my EcoDiesel?

Keep supply and filtration healthy. FCA requires 3-micron filtration and recommends draining the separator at every oil change. Low supply pressure and contaminated fuel are commonly cited stressors for CP4-family pumps.
