2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Fuel Additives

Diesel fuel additives and winter treatments for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel. The thing to know on this truck: additives go in the diesel tank only. The DEF filler sits right beside the fuel filler behind the driver-side door, and FCA says contamination of the DEF tank means replacing the entire DEF system.

Fuel treatment on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel was built for ultra-low sulfur diesel, 15 ppm, with no more than B5 biodiesel for routine use. FCA fits a 12-volt heater in the engine-mounted fuel filter housing to fight gelling, and the owner guide goes a step further. When temperatures drop below 20 F and winterized or No. 1 ULSD is not available, FCA recommends a Mopar diesel fuel treatment or an equivalent. That is the factory's own case for keeping a winter treatment on hand if your truck sees real cold.

What goes wrong

Gelled fuel shows up as long cranking, a no-start or lost power in freezing weather. Water in the fuel triggers the Water In Fuel message and chime, and the fix for that is draining the separator before you start the engine, not pouring in a bottle. The expensive mistake is a fuel additive in the DEF tank. FCA says never put additives, diesel or gasoline in the DEF tank, and contamination means replacing the entire DEF system.

Choosing an additive

Think seasonally. A winter blend earns its place when a cold snap arrives before winterized fuel reaches your local pumps. An everyday diesel treatment is for owners who want a conditioner in the tank on every fill. Read each label for the dose rate and what the product is built to do, and match the bottle size to how you fuel. Case packs make sense for fleets or for anyone who treats every tank. No additive replaces clean ULSD, a 3-micron fuel filter and a drained separator.

What we carry

Exergy Performance Diesel Additive in 4 oz cases of 12, 16 oz bottles and 16 oz cases of 12, with a Winter Blend in the same sizes. Alliant Power Ultraguard, Winterguard and Lubriguard diesel fuel treatments. XDP Diesel Power Plus in a 16 oz bottle, and Merchant Automotive 10508 diesel fuel additive. Browse the full fuel additives page for more.

Fitment notes

Fuel additives are not truck-specific the way a lift pump is, but this page is filtered for the Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel, not heavy-duty Rams. Use them in the diesel tank only, follow the label dose, and keep routine biodiesel at B5 or below per FCA. If you run B6 to B20 under a state mandate, FCA wants that fuel used within 15 days and oil and fuel-filter service at 8,000 miles.

Frequently asked questions

When does my EcoDiesel need an anti-gel treatment?

FCA recommends a diesel fuel treatment when temperatures fall below 20 F and winterized or No. 1 ULSD is not available. Gelled fuel shows up as long cranking, a no-start or lost power in the cold. Exergy Winter Blend and Alliant Power Winterguard are the cold-weather options here.

What happens if I pour fuel additive into the DEF tank?

FCA says never put fuel additives, diesel or gasoline in the DEF tank, and contamination requires replacing the entire DEF system. The DEF filler sits beside the diesel filler behind the same driver-side door, so take a second look before you pour.

Will an additive clear a Water In Fuel warning?

No. The owner guide says to drain the engine-mounted water separator before starting the engine when the Water In Fuel message comes on. Drain it first, then keep an eye on where you buy fuel.
