Filtration on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

From the factory, the EcoDiesel relies on one engine-mounted fuel filter and water separator between the in-tank lift pump and the CP4.2. The housing has a bottom drain plug, a reusable water-in-fuel sensor and a 12-volt heater to keep fuel from gelling. FCA requires the replacement filter to meet a 3-micron rating, and the owner guide warns that a filter missing the filtration and water-separation spec can severely impact fuel system life. The service kit includes a new canister O-ring, and the new filter goes in dry. Do not pre-fill it.

What goes wrong

Water and debris do the damage. When the Water In Fuel message and chime come on, drain the separator before you start the engine. Contaminated fuel is one of the commonly cited stressors for CP4-family pumps, and the EcoDiesel's CP4.2 is under recall 22V-406 for failures that send metal through the rails, injectors and return lines. Metal shavings in the fuel filter are one of the symptoms owners report. Follow the filter interval in your own owner guide, and never stretch it on this truck.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The baseline is simple: a spec-compliant 3-micron filter in the factory housing, and the separator drained at every oil change, which is FCA's own recommendation. If you want more protection, a frame-mounted system adds a lift pump plus its own water separator and particulate filter ahead of the engine. That is an added layer, not a replacement. The factory engine-mounted filter stays in service either way.

FASS Titanium Signature Series and No-Drop Series 140F 110GPH fuel systems, in standard and PLUS versions, listed for the 2014-2019 3.0L EcoDiesel. Fitment notes

These parts are for the Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel on the DS body, not heavy-duty Rams. The FASS and AirDog replacement filters service those brands' own systems; they do not replace the factory engine-mounted filter. Match standard or XL length to the housing on your FASS system. The Raptor pumps are universal, so plan your mounting, wiring and plumbing before you order. Frame-mounted kits can be cab-specific, and your tank may be 26 or 32 gallons, so confirm both. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put any fuel filter in the factory EcoDiesel housing?

No. FCA requires a filter that meets a 3-micron rating and its water-separation spec, and the owner guide says a filter that misses it can severely impact fuel system life. With a recalled CP4.2 downstream, that is not the place to cut corners.

Should I pre-fill a new fuel filter on my EcoDiesel?

No. The owner guide says never pre-fill the new filter, because of the risk of debris getting into the system. Install it dry with the new canister O-ring from the service kit, and reuse the water-in-fuel sensor.

What is the difference between the FASS standard and XL filters?

The XL versions, like the XWS3002XL and PF3001XL, are extended-length elements, and the Filter Pack XL bundles the longer filters. Match the filter length to the housings on your FASS system. If you are not sure which you have, call us before you order.

Does a FASS or AirDog system change how often I service the factory filter?

Follow the fuel filter interval in your owner guide regardless. Service the aftermarket system's filters on the maker's schedule, and keep draining the factory separator at every oil change.
