Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
A gerotor oil pump in the front cover feeds the engine, and capacity is 13.0 quarts with the filter. Ford's filter number is Motorcraft FL-2124S, which supersedes FL-2051S. The pan is steel with a conventional drain plug. For viscosity, Dieselhub lists SAE 10W-30 for ambient temperatures above 0F and SAE 5W-40 above -20F; confirm the grade and Ford spec on your oil-fill cap and in the owner's guide. The 2015 engine update that carried into these trucks added IROX-coated lower main bearings. The rest of the engine is under Powerstroke parts.
What fails and why
Fuel dilution is the main oil-system concern on this engine. During active DPF regeneration, post-injection fuel washes past the rings into the crankcase. The dipstick level rises, the oil smells like diesel, and oil life gets shorter. It follows duty cycle, not mileage: F-250s and F-350s that idle a lot or run short stop-and-go trips get it worst. If that describes your truck, shorten the oil interval and keep watching the dipstick level.
The CCV separator is the other oil-related item. When it loads up, crankcase pressure rises, oil gets pushed into the turbo inlet and intercooler, and seals start to seep. Dieselhub recommends servicing it every 30,000-40,000 miles.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Most trucks need only stock-replacement parts: the right oil, a good filter, and fresh pan or filter-housing gaskets when those come apart. The upgrades here are hardware. PPE's heavy-duty cast aluminum oil pan and the Mag-Hytec pan replace the factory steel pan. SPE's billet stainless drain plug and XDP's black-phosphate pan bolt kit replace factory hardware. Mishimoto sells both a replacement oil cooler and a performance version.
What we carry
Oil comes from Hot Shot's Secret, with Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw CK-4 oils plus TBN Booster, FR3 Friction Reducer and Stiction Eliminator, and from Lucas Oil, with CK-4 oils, Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer and TB Zinc Plus break-in additive. Both lines include 10W-30 and 15W-40 grades, and Hot Shot's adds 5W-40; check the owner's guide before choosing a 15W-40 for this truck. Filters include the Mahle OC1662 and the PPE MicroPure XR. Mahle also covers the oil filter housing gasket, oil cooler mounting kit and upper and lower pan gaskets, next to the SPE Motorsport upper pan gasket and billet drain plug. Pans come from PPE, Mag-Hytec and Dorman, with XDP pan bolts and X-Factor oil additive, Mishimoto oil coolers and a Dorman CCV filter.
Fitment notes
Watch year ranges on gaskets: the Mahle OS32478 upper pan gasket set and SPE S100467 upper pan gasket are listed for 2015-2019, while the Mahle OS32438 lower pan gasket covers 2011-2022. The Dorman 904-702 CCV filter is listed for 2017-2019 cab and chassis trucks. Pickups from 2018-2022 use a filter-less CCV separator with a removable lid, and 2016-2019 trucks may have mixed types, so look at what is on your driver-side valve cover before ordering. Oil coolers and the oil cooler mounting kit are listed for 2011-2019. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What oil weight does the 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke take?
Dieselhub lists SAE 10W-30 for ambient temperatures above 0F and SAE 5W-40 above -20F. Confirm the grade and Ford spec printed on your oil-fill cap and in the owner's guide before you buy. Capacity is 13.0 quarts with the filter.
Why does my oil smell like diesel?
That is the classic sign of fuel dilution. Fuel from DPF regeneration post-injection gets past the rings and into the oil, and the dipstick level rises with it. If you idle a lot or drive short trips, shorten your oil interval and watch the level.
Which oil filter fits?
Ford's number is Motorcraft FL-2124S, which supersedes FL-2051S. On this page, the Mahle OC1662 and PPE MicroPure XR filters are listed for the 6.7L Powerstroke across these years.
Does my truck have a CCV filter?
It depends on the truck. Pickups from 2018-2022 use a filter-less separator with a removable lid, and 2016-2019 trucks may have mixed types. The Dorman 904-702 filter here is listed for 2017-2019 cab and chassis trucks, so check your driver-side valve cover first.
