Call or Text (352) 722-5295Engine oil on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
A full change takes 13.0 quarts with the filter, so four one-gallon jugs cover it with three quarts left for top-off. Ford's filter is the Motorcraft FL-2124S. Viscosity on this engine follows ambient temperature: 10W-30 is listed for temperatures above 0F, and 5W-40 for temperatures above -20F. If your truck lives somewhere it never sees 0F, 10W-30 covers it. Either way, the oil-fill cap and owner's guide have the final word on grade and specification.
Fuel dilution and your oil
The main thing working against oil on this engine is fuel dilution, which owners call making oil. During active DPF regeneration the engine adds post-injection fuel to heat the exhaust, and some of it washes past the rings into the crankcase. The oil level climbs, the oil thins, and you may smell diesel on the dipstick. It is tied to duty cycle, not mileage, and hits hardest on trucks that idle a lot or run short stop-and-go trips. If that is your truck, shorten the oil interval and check the level between changes.
What we carry
Hot Shot's Secret makes up most of this shelf: Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw engine oils, including full-synthetic CK-4 oils in 10W-30 and 5W-40, plus the ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils, TBN Booster oil stabilizer, FR3 friction reducer and the Original Stiction Eliminator. Lucas Oil adds a synthetic-blend 10W-30 CK-4, 15W-40 CK-4 oils including a synthetic, the Magnum High TBN 15W-40, Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer in regular and synthetic versions, and TB Zinc Plus break-in additive. You'll also find XDP's X-Factor oil additive and an SPE Motorsport oil pan for the 6.7L. More engine parts are on our Power Stroke parts hub.
Choosing a grade
This collection carries oils used across many diesels, so not every grade on the page is the right one for a 6.7L. The 0W-20 light-duty diesel oil and the 5W-20 and 20W-50 racing grades, for example, are not the 10W-30 or 5W-40 listed for this engine. If you want to run another grade such as 15W-40, check your owner's guide first. Pick the viscosity first, then the brand and base stock. Additives are optional extras; none of them stand in for the right oil changed on time.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 2017-2019 F-250 or F-350 6.7L hold?
13.0 quarts with the filter. Four one-gallon jugs covers a full change with three quarts left over for top-off. The factory filter is the Motorcraft FL-2124S.
Should I run 10W-30 or 5W-40 in my 6.7L Powerstroke?
It depends on ambient temperature. SAE 10W-30 is listed for temperatures above 0F and SAE 5W-40 for temperatures above -20F, so a truck that never sees 0F is covered by 10W-30. Confirm against your oil-fill cap and owner's guide before you buy.
Why is the oil level on my dipstick going up?
That is usually fuel dilution. Post-injection fuel from active DPF regeneration can wash into the crankcase, raising the level, thinning the oil and leaving a diesel smell. Trucks with lots of idle time or short trips should shorten the oil interval and watch the dipstick level.
