Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel system on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel is a 3.0L V6 built by VM Motori in Italy, and in the Ram truck lineup it only went into the half-ton 1500. Fuel delivery is Bosch common-rail, sold as MultiJet II in Ram's launch literature. On the low-pressure side, the in-tank pump pushes fuel through the filter to the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump. The CP4.2 loads the rails at 29,000 psi, and that figure is the same on the 2018-2019 second-generation engine and the 2020-2023 third-generation engine. What changed for 2020 was the injector nozzles. Ram approves B20 biodiesel for this engine.
What fails and why
The CP4.2 is the weak point on this platform, and it is documented, not rumor. Stellantis recalled the pump across every model year here: campaign 22V406 (Z46) for 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic trucks, 22V767 (Z96) for 2020-2022, and 23V263 for 2021-2023 per NHTSA. When the pump fails internally, it sheds metal debris through the rails, injectors and lines and starves the engine of fuel. Signs to watch for:
- A fuel leak at the pump
- Pump noise louder than normal
- A check engine light or a Service Electronic Throttle Control message
- Loss of power, a stall or a no-start
It can happen at any mileage. The factory remedy is a new pump plus inspection or replacement of the other fuel-system parts the debris reached.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Start with the recall. It is the only factory-backed fix for the CP4.2, and a dealer runs it by VIN. Once that is handled, the job is clean, dry fuel and steady supply. Stock-style filter service is enough for a lot of daily drivers. An added filtration and water-separation system makes sense if you tow often or fill up at stations you don't know. It keeps water and dirt out of what reaches the pump. It does not change what is inside the CP4.2, and nothing on this page does.

Fitment notes
Know which truck you have. A 2018 Ram 1500 and a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic are DS-body trucks with the second-generation engine. The redesigned 2019 DT Ram 1500 was never sold with a diesel, so any 2019 EcoDiesel is a Classic. 2020-2023 trucks are DT bodies with the third-generation engine, and the 2023 was sold only as a Crew Cab 4x4. Several bolt-on parts here, including the FASS systems, the Fleece pump and sending unit and the MAHLE gasket, are titled for 2014-2019 trucks, so a 2020-2023 owner should confirm with the fitment checker. PPE lists one fuel cap for 2014-2018 trucks and another for 2019-2023, so a 2019 Classic owner should confirm which one fits. Injector nozzles changed for 2020, so match anything injector-related by part number. A 2025 Ram 1500 with a 3.0L is a gasoline Hurricane six, not an EcoDiesel. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Ram 1500 EcoDiesel covered by a CP4.2 pump recall?
Most likely. NHTSA lists 22V406 for 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic trucks, 22V767 for 2020-2022, and 23V263 for 2021-2023. The remedy is essentially the same in each: a new pump plus other fuel-system parts. Run your VIN with NHTSA or a Ram dealer to see which campaign applies and whether it has been done.
What are the warning signs of a failing high-pressure pump?
The recall notices point to a fuel leak at the pump, unusual pump noise and a check engine light or Service Electronic Throttle Control message. From there it can progress to loss of power, a stall or a no-start. Metal shavings found in the fuel system mean the pump has come apart and debris has moved downstream.
Will a FASS or AirDog system prevent a CP4.2 failure?
No part on this page fixes the pump, and we won't sell it to you that way. The recall is the factory fix. A filtration system adds water separation and particulate filtration ahead of the pump so cleaner fuel goes in. That is worth having for its own reasons, but it does not change the pump's internals.
Can I run biodiesel in my EcoDiesel?
Ram approves B20 for this engine, so stay at or below a 20 percent blend. Cold-weather fuel and anti-gel come up often among Gen 3 owners, and we carry Exergy winter-blend additive in single bottles and cases for that.
Do fuel parts for a 2018 truck fit a 2021?
Not always. The 2018-2019 trucks run the Gen 2 engine in the DS body, while 2020-2023 trucks run the Gen 3 engine in the DT body. Injector nozzles changed between them, and several products here are titled only for 2014-2019. Check the fitment checker on the product page or call us with your VIN.
