2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Fuel Additives

Diesel fuel treatments for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel: winter blends, general fuel treatments and a lubricity treatment from Exergy, Alliant Power, XDP and Merchant Automotive. One thing to know before you pour anything in: no additive is a fix for the CP4.2 high-pressure pump recall. Check that by VIN first, then treat your fuel.

Fuel additives for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel runs Bosch common-rail injection at 29,000 psi, fed by a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump. Ram approves B20 biodiesel for this engine. Cold weather is a recurring topic among Gen 3 owners, with a forum thread devoted to diesel fuel and anti-gel. That is where most owners start with additives: keeping fuel flowing when temperatures drop.

What an additive can and can't do

A treatment is a fuel-quality product. Winter blends are sold to help fuel stay usable in the cold, and general treatments are sold to condition the fuel. None of that reverses an internal pump failure. The CP4.2 was recalled on every year this page covers (22V406 for 2018-2019, 22V767 and 23V263 for 2020-2023), and the recall remedy, a new pump plus inspection of the rest of the fuel system, is the only factory-backed fix. Get that handled, then pick a treatment.

Choosing a treatment

If your truck sees freezing weather, keep a winter blend on hand before the first cold snap. If you run more than one diesel or treat every tank, the cases of 12 save trips. Read each label for the dose per gallon and when to add it, since products differ. A 2021 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel spec sheet lists a 23-gallon tank, but don't assume yours matches; confirm your tank size before you dose.

Fitment notes

Fuel treatments are not tied to a model year, so the same bottle works in a 2018 Ram 1500, a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic or a 2020-2023 DT. If you blend biodiesel, stay within B20. Follow the label rather than doubling up, and don't treat an additive as a substitute for fuel filter service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an anti-gel additive in my EcoDiesel?

If you see freezing temperatures, it is worth keeping on hand, and anti-gel is a recurring topic among Gen 3 owners. Alliant Power WINTERGUARD and the Exergy winter blends are the cold-weather products on this page. If your truck never sees a freeze, a general treatment is the better fit.

Can I use these additives with biodiesel?

Ram approves B20 in the EcoDiesel. Check each product's label for biodiesel guidance before you mix, since we can't speak for every formula. Stay within B20 regardless of what you add.

Will a lubricity additive protect the CP4.2?

We can't promise that, and the sources we rely on don't show it. The pump is under recall on every model year here, and the recall is the only factory-backed fix. Use a treatment for what it is sold for, and keep the recall current by VIN.

Do these work in both Gen 2 and Gen 3 EcoDiesels?

Yes. Additives go in the fuel, not on a bracket, so model year doesn't change fitment. Dose by your tank size and the label on the bottle.
