2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Fuel Tanks

Fuel and DEF caps for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel, in billet aluminum from PPE and Fleece. They replace the factory caps on the filler necks. What matters most is the year split: some caps are listed for 2014-2018 trucks and others for 2019-2023, so match the cap to your model year before you order.

Fuel Tanks and Caps on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

An EcoDiesel owner fills two tanks: diesel and diesel exhaust fluid. The DEF feeds the SCR aftertreatment that Ram built into every year of this engine. Ram's 2021 EcoDiesel spec sheet lists a 23-gallon fuel tank; we have not verified other configurations, so do not assume yours matches. Ram approves B20 biodiesel for this engine. The caps in this collection seal both fillers and give you a billet replacement for a factory cap that is worn, lost or broken.

What fails and why

The tanks and caps are not where this engine gets into trouble. The documented fuel-system failure on the EcoDiesel is the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump, which can fail internally and push metal debris through the rails, injectors and lines. Warning signs include a fuel leak at the pump, excessive pump noise, a warning light, loss of power or a stall. Every year in this range is covered by one of the HPFP recalls, 22V406, 22V767 or 23V263, depending on model year. Caps get replaced for simpler reasons: left on the pump island, cracked, or worn at the seal.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A factory replacement cap does the job. The billet caps here are the upgrade: machined aluminum with an anodized finish, and on the PPE fuel caps, a magnet built into the cap. Color helps at the pump, too. PPE's fuel caps are anodized green and its DEF cap is anodized blue, which makes the diesel and DEF fillers easy to tell apart at a glance. Fleece offers its billet fuel cap in black or green for owners who want a different look.

What we carry

PPE: the 273001000 billet fuel cap with built-in magnet in green anodize, listed for 2014-2018 EcoDiesel; the 273003000 billet fuel cap with built-in magnet in green anodize, listed for 2019-2023 EcoDiesel; and the 273005000 billet DEF cap in blue anodize, listed for 2014-2023 EcoDiesel. Fleece Performance Engineering: the FPE-FC-1316-BLK black anodized and FPE-FC-1316-GRN green anodized billet fuel caps, listed for 2014-2018 EcoDiesel.

Fitment notes

Match the year on the listing. PPE 273001000 and the Fleece caps are listed for 2014-2018 EcoDiesel trucks, which in this collection means the 2018 Ram 1500. PPE 273003000 is listed for 2019-2023 EcoDiesel. The PPE 273005000 DEF cap is listed for 2014-2023, so it covers every year on this page. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic shares the DS body with the 2018 truck but falls inside PPE's 2019-2023 listing; if you have a Classic, use the fitment checker or call us with your VIN. Remember that the 2023 EcoDiesel was a Crew Cab 4x4 only, and the engine was never offered in a Ram 2500 or 3500.

Frequently asked questions

Which fuel cap fits a 2021 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?

PPE 273003000, which is listed for 2019-2023 EcoDiesel trucks. The PPE 273001000 and the Fleece caps are listed for 2014-2018, so they are meant for the 2018 truck on this page. The 273005000 DEF cap fits every year here.

Will a billet cap help with the CP4.2 pump problem?

No. A cap seals the filler; it does not change how the high-pressure pump works. The factory-backed fix for the CP4.2 is the HPFP recall. Check by VIN whether 22V406, 22V767 or 23V263 applies, and have the downstream fuel parts inspected when a pump is replaced.

Can I run biodiesel in my EcoDiesel?

Ram approves B20 biodiesel for this engine in its launch literature. Blends above B20 fall outside that approval, so stick to B20 or below.

Why is the DEF cap blue?

PPE's DEF cap is anodized blue and its fuel caps are anodized green, which makes the two fillers easy to tell apart. Putting the wrong fluid in the wrong tank is a mistake you want to avoid, and a color-coded cap is a simple guard against it.
