Three transmissions show up in these trucks. The 48RE automatic is the common one: four speeds, ATF+4, about 4 quarts at a pan service and 14.5-16.5 quarts dry, with electronic governor pressure control and, from mid-2004, an electric TTVA in place of the old throttle valve cable. Its 560-570 lb-ft input rating sits under the 600-610 lb-ft this engine makes. Manual trucks have the NV5600 through 2005 or the Mercedes G56 from mid-2005, and the G56 uses a dual-mass flywheel. Most of the parts on this page are for the 48RE, so start by confirming which one you have.
What wears out
On the automatic, builders see failures between 100,000 and 150,000 miles even on stock trucks, announced by slipping, no lock-up, no overdrive, burnt fluid or shifts that are off. On a truck with more power, input shafts have broken at as little as about 500 rear-wheel horsepower. On the G56, the dual-mass flywheel is the known weak point under heavy hauling or extra power, with chatter, rattle and clutch engagement trouble as the tell.
Service parts vs. build parts
If the transmission is healthy, service parts are where your money goes furthest. Shops that build 48REs change fluid and filter and adjust the bands every 30,000 miles, well ahead of the 100,000-mile owner's-manual interval, and a double-deep finned pan helps with cooling. If the truck is past that point or making more power, build parts take over: valve bodies, billet shafts, converters and staged build kits that let a 48RE handle substantially more than stock. Any power upgrade should be CARB EO-numbered, verified per product and model year.

Fitment notes
Read the year range in each title. The 48RE shares its ratios with the earlier 47RE but not its internals, so buy parts listed for the 48RE; parts labeled 47RE/48RE are made for both. Some items are year-specific inside this platform: the short shift kits are titled 2003-2005, the overdrive lockout 2005, the pressure enhancer and TTVA pigtail 2005-2007, and the Anchor mounts start at 2006. A 2005 manual truck can be an NV5600 or a G56. For 2007, confirm you have the 5.9L and not the 6.7L. Browse the rest of the engine on our Cummins page.
Frequently asked questions
What should I replace at a 48RE service?
Fresh ATF+4, a new filter and a pan gasket, plus a band adjustment. A pan service takes about 4 quarts. If you are dropping the pan anyway, that is the time to consider a deep finned pan.
Why are so many 48RE parts labeled 727?
The 48RE descends from Chrysler's A727 three-speed with an overdrive unit bolted on. That is why the Mag-Hytec pans and filter and the Mahle gasket on this page carry 727 in their names while still being titled for 5.9L Cummins trucks through 2007.
What is the TTVA, and why is there a pigtail for it?
The TTVA, or transmission throttle valve actuator, is the electric motor that replaced the 48RE's mechanical throttle valve cable starting in mid-2004. The Fleece pigtail is a replacement connector for it, titled for 2005-2007 trucks, so the plug can be repaired without replacing the whole harness.
