Call or Text (352) 722-5295Filter service on the 2004.5-2007 Ram 5.9L Cummins 48RE
The 48RE is built on Chrysler's A727 three-speed with an overdrive unit added, which is why so many of its service parts carry the 727 name. It runs ATF+4 and takes about 4 quarts when you drop the pan. The owner's-manual schedule lists fluid and a band adjustment at 100,000 miles. Shops that build these transmissions do fluid, filter and band every 30,000 miles, and on an unbuilt truck we think that shorter schedule is money well spent, because the 48RE is the weak link behind this engine.
What we carry
The Mag-Hytec 727 transmission pan filter is the one that sits in the pan. BD Diesel adds the 1064017 in-line transmission filter kit and the 1604008 replacement transmission filter; read the listing to see which job each one does. PPE rounds it out with the 228051001 filter spacer block with O-ring.
Choosing the right filter
All of these are titled for 1989 or 1994 through 2007 Cummins trucks, so they cover the 48RE in your 2004.5-2007 truck. If you run the factory pan, you need a pan filter, a new gasket and ATF+4. If you are switching to a deep aftermarket pan, check that pan's listing to see whether it calls for a spacer or a specific filter before you order. For 2007, make sure the truck has the 5.9L and the 48RE; trucks built after January 1, 2007 got the 6.7L and a different transmission. Our Cummins page has the rest of the parts for this engine.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the 48RE filter?
The owner's-manual schedule puts the fluid service at 100,000 miles. Transmission builders recommend fluid, filter and band adjustment every 30,000 miles, and that is the interval we suggest on a truck that tows or works.
Will a 727 filter fit my 48RE?
Yes. The 48RE descends from the A727 three-speed, and the Mag-Hytec 727 pan filter is titled for 1989-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks. Run your truck through the fitment checker on the product page to be sure.
