Call or Text (352) 722-5295Building up the 48RE behind the 5.9L Cummins
Chrysler gave the 48RE a 10-lobe pump, a bigger direct drum, a 93-tooth forward clutch spline and six-pinion planets over the 47RE, and it still carries a 560-570 lb-ft input rating against an engine making 600-610 lb-ft. Builders have watched input shafts snap at as little as about 500 rear-wheel horsepower. BD Diesel's answer is billet input, intermediate and output shafts, a 48RE geartrain, valve bodies including a full manual version and one with the governor pressure solenoid and transducer, a 48RE pressure enhancer, and Stage 1 through Stage 4 Build-It kits, with a Stage 4 offered with a torque converter. If you are adding power, match the build to it and keep any power upgrade to CARB EO-numbered parts, verified per product and model year.
Cooling, mounts and controls
For cooling, Mishimoto has truck-specific replacement coolers titled for 2003-2007 and 2003-2009 trucks, radiator and cooler bundles, and a range of universal coolers including one with a fan. BD adds Xtruded and standard auxiliary coolers, including a double-stacked unit, plus an electric cooler fan. Fleece Performance Engineering has a cooler and line kit, and CSF offers the 20009 OEM-style replacement cooler. Anchor supplies transmission mounts, one with a heat shield. On the controls side there is an ATS Diesel Performance 47RE/48RE governor pressure switch (transducer), a Fleece TTVA connector pigtail, a BD tapshifter, a BD overdrive lockout and BD short shift kits.
Fitment notes
The year range in each title matters inside this platform. The short shift kits are titled 2003-2005, the overdrive lockout 2005, the pressure enhancer and TTVA pigtail 2005-2007, and the Anchor mounts start at 2006, so a 2004.5 truck should check every listing. Universal coolers need you to plan the mounting and lines. For 2007, confirm the 5.9L; trucks built after January 1, 2007 have the 6.7L and a 68RFE. More for this engine is on our Cummins page.
Frequently asked questions
Which BD Build-It stage do I need?
Pick by power and use. BD's Stage 1 through Stage 4 kits are titled for 2003-2007 48RE trucks, and the Stage 4 is also sold with a torque converter. Built 48RE parts are sold by horsepower level for a reason, so tell us your power level and how you tow and we will help match a kit.
Should I use an OEM-style cooler or an auxiliary cooler?
If the factory cooler needs replacing, the CSF 20009 and the Mishimoto truck-specific replacement coolers go where the original did. Auxiliary and universal coolers from BD and Mishimoto add cooling alongside it, which suits a truck that tows hard. Builders also add a double-deep finned pan to help a 48RE run cooler.
