Call or Text (352) 722-5295The flex plate on the 2004.5-2007 Ram 5.9L Cummins
Every automatic truck on this platform has the 48RE, and the flex plate bolts between the crankshaft and the torque converter. Manual trucks are a different story: the G56 that arrived in mid-2005 came with a dual-mass flywheel, and the NV5600 before it also runs a flywheel, so these parts do not apply to either. Because the transmission has to come out to reach the flex plate, the sensible time to change it is when the transmission is already out, such as when a built 48RE and upgraded converter go in. Built 48RE packages are sold by horsepower and use level, and every pound-foot that reaches the converter passes through this plate first.
What we carry
XDP offers the XD645 Tow Series flex plate, the XD647 Billet Tow and Race Series flex plate, and the XD654 flex plate bolt kit. BD Diesel offers the 1041210 billet flex plate and the 1041212 HI5 12-bolt billet flex plate. DNR Customs supplies a Cummins flex plate install kit for the job.
How to choose
Start with how the truck works. XDP splits its line into a Tow Series plate and a billet Tow and Race Series plate, so the names tell you who each is aimed at. BD's HI5 12-bolt plate is a different design from its standard billet plate, so match the plate to the converter you are running and check the listing for what it pairs with. Whatever plate you choose, put it in with fresh hardware from the XDP bolt kit or the DNR Customs install kit rather than reusing old bolts. The plates are titled 1994-2007, which covers your 5.9L; a 2007 truck built after January 1, 2007 has the 6.7L and a 68RFE, so check the engine first. See the rest of the engine on our Cummins page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace the flex plate when I replace the transmission?
It is the cheapest time to do it, since the transmission has to come out to reach the plate. If you are installing a built 48RE and converter for more torque or heavier towing, a billet plate and new bolts go in for little extra labor. Call us if you want help matching a plate to the converter.
Will these fit my manual G56 truck?
No. The flex plate is an automatic-transmission part. G56 trucks came with a dual-mass flywheel, and that is a separate part from what is listed here.
