The Mag-Hytec 727 Transmission Pan Filter is a stock-replacement filter for the Chrysler/Dodge 727 automatic behind the 5.9L Cummins in 1989-2007 Dodge Ram trucks. It installs in place of the factory filter and is designed to meet or exceed OE specifications, so it is the filter to have on hand for every pan-drop service.
Fitment
Fits 1989-2007 Dodge Ram trucks with the 5.9L Cummins and a Chrysler/Dodge 727 automatic. That covers the 1989-1993 and 1994-1998 12-valve, the 1998.5-2002 24-valve and the 2003-2007 common-rail engines. On 2003-2004 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks the automatic is the 48RE, except some early-2003 standard-output trucks that came with the 47RE. This is an automatic transmission filter, so it does not apply to trucks with a manual transmission. Verify fitment by VIN or call the shop.
Why this part
Fluid and filter changes are the basic upkeep on these automatics. On 2003-2004 trucks, towing in overdrive can push fluid temperatures over 260°F, which triggers protective downshifts. The 48RE intermediate band is also known to stretch and lose friction material by 120,000-150,000 miles, and burnt fluid is one of the signs. Every time you drop the pan to change the filter, you get a look at the fluid and at what has settled in the pan.
