Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fluid specs for the 2004.5-2007 Ram 5.9L Cummins
- 48RE automatic: ATF+4. About 4 quarts at a pan service, 14.5-16.5 quarts dry.
- G56 six-speed manual (mid-2005 to 2007): Ram specifies ATF+4, while Mercedes lists gear oils. Capacity is about 6.1 quarts on 2005-2009 trucks.
- NV5600 six-speed manual (through 2005): Mopar fluid 4874464, 4.75 quarts, or 5 with the filter.
- NV271 or NV273 transfer case: ATF+4, 2.0 quarts. Follow the owner's manual for the interval.
Why fluid matters on this truck
The 48RE is rated for 560-570 lb-ft and the engine makes 600-610 lb-ft, so the automatic works above its rating from the factory. Burnt fluid is one of the signs of a failing 48RE, along with slipping and lost overdrive. The owner's-manual schedule lists a 48RE fluid service at 100,000 miles; shops that build these units change fluid and filter every 30,000 miles, and we would follow the shorter schedule on any truck that tows. On the G56, heavy loads can push heat past what the factory design manages, and fluid breakdown is one of the symptoms.
What we carry
Hot Shot's Secret makes most of the fluid here. The Blue Diamond ATF+4/DEXRON III/MERCON V lists ATF+4 right on the label, which makes it the straightforward pick for the 48RE and the transfer case. The ADRENALINE line includes Pro Shift +4, Nano Shift and Speed Shift; read each label against the ATF+4 spec. For G56 trucks there is Blue Diamond G56 Severe Duty SAE 50. Hot Shot's also offers Shift Restore, a transmission fluid additive. The Blue Diamond Type F and Dexron VI and Mercon LV bottles are labeled for other specs, so check them against ATF+4 before they go in this truck. Lucas Oil 10418 Multi-Vehicle ATF is here too; confirm the spec on the label.
Fitment notes
Know which transmission you have before you buy. A 2005 manual can be an NV5600 or a G56, and they call for different fluids. A 2007 truck built after January 1, 2007 has the 6.7L and a 68RFE, so confirm the engine. If your G56 has been running gear oil, stay consistent or talk to us before switching. Everything else for this engine is on our Cummins page.
Frequently asked questions
What fluid goes in my G56?
Ram specifies ATF+4 for the G56, while Mercedes, who built it, lists gear oils. Find out what is in yours now and stay with it, or call us before you change over. On 2005-2009 trucks the G56 holds about 6.1 quarts.
How much ATF does a 48RE pan service take?
About 4 quarts of ATF+4 when you drop the pan and change the filter. The transmission holds 14.5-16.5 quarts dry, so a pan service only replaces part of the fluid.
