The 2020 update changed how fuel leaves the tank. From 2011 through 2019, the 6.7L Powerstroke carried its lift pump in a frame-mounted diesel fuel conditioning module. For 2020, Ford moved it inside the tank. From there, fuel runs through a 10-micron frame-mounted primary filter with a water separator and a 4-micron engine-mounted secondary filter, then into the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump, which feeds two rails and eight piezo injectors at up to 36,000 psi. Because the lift pump already lives in the tank, aftermarket sumps on these trucks are used mainly to feed an external lift pump such as a FASS or AirDog system, not to replace a factory part.
Why fuel supply matters on this engine
The CP4.2 is fuel-lubricated and depends on clean fuel. Water and debris are the other CP4 killers, next to the biodiesel deposits named in Ford's recall 24S78 (NHTSA 24V957), which covers 2020-2022 Super Duty diesels and is remedied with PCM and TCM software, not a new pump. When a CP4 fails, it can contaminate the whole fuel system: the injectors, both rails, the high-pressure and return lines, the low-pressure parts, the tank and the sending unit. That is the case for an external lift pump. AirDog and FASS systems listed for 2017-2022 trucks add filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4, and a sump is one way to plumb that pump into the tank.
Choosing a sump
The main split is whether the sump carries the return line. XDP makes the XD182, a one-hole sump, and the XD243, a one-hole design with a fuel return. G&R Diesel's GRD00153 is a bottom sump with an integrated return. BD Diesel's Flow-Max fuel tank sump, part 1050330, is the other option. Match the sump to your lift pump kit's plumbing: if the kit sends fuel back to the tank, a sump with the return built in keeps that to one opening. Any sump goes into the bottom of the tank, so plan to drain the tank and do the work alongside the lift pump install.
What we carry
Sumps here come from XDP, BD Diesel and G&R Diesel, in plain and return-equipped versions. For the pump that draws from them, see our lift pumps.
Fitment notes
Lift pump, tank and sending-unit parts do not cross the 2020 split, so do not order from a 2017-2019 listing without checking. Lift pump vendors split their kits 2011-2016, 2017-2022 and 2023-up; a 2017-2022 kit is the right family for your truck, but read the in-tank pump notes for 2020-up before you buy. If you are replacing the tank anyway, the S&B 68 gallon long-bed tank is built transfer-pump ready. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sump if I keep the factory lift pump?
No. On 2020-2022 trucks the factory lift pump sits inside the tank, so the stock system does not use an aftermarket sump. A sump comes into play when you add an external lift pump such as a FASS or AirDog system.
Why add an external lift pump to a 2020-2022 6.7L?
The Bosch CP4.2 is lubricated by the fuel it pumps, and water and debris in that fuel are among the things that kill it. AirDog and FASS systems listed for 2017-2022 trucks add filtration and water separation ahead of the pump. A sump gives that system its pickup at the bottom of the tank.
What should I do if I find metal in my fuel filter?
Stop driving. Metal flakes in a fuel filter are the CP4 red flag, and more driving sends more debris toward the injectors. A CP4 failure can contaminate the injectors, both rails, the high-pressure and return lines, the tank and the sending unit, so get it diagnosed before anything else goes on the truck.
