Call or Text (352) 722-5295Intercooler and piping on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
This engine has no front-mount intercooler. Ford put an air-to-water charge air cooler in the engine valley and cools it with the secondary coolant loop, which moves heat better than an air-to-air design. Boost leaves the Garrett turbo through a short hot-side tube, passes through the cooler, and exits through the plastic cold-side pipe into the intake manifold. So when you shop intercooler piping for this truck, you are looking at two short tubes with their boots, couplers and adapters, not a long boost-tube run through the grille. Everything else for this engine is on our Powerstroke hub.
What fails and why
Cold-side pipe. The factory plastic pipe can break and strand the truck. The signs are a sudden loss of boost, a loud hiss and limp mode. There is no set mileage for it, but trucks that tow and tuned trucks are more exposed.
Charge air cooler. The air-to-water core can leak internally and put coolant into the intake. Watch for coolant loss, white steam, or coolant in the cold-side pipe.
Oil in the cooler. An overdue CCV separator sends oil mist through the intake tract and coats the cooler. The CCV is a service item every 30,000 to 40,000 miles, and it is worth doing before you install a new cooler or pipes.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Swapping a broken plastic pipe for another plastic pipe leaves the same weak spot in place. An aluminum cold-side pipe with silicone boots fixes it for good, and the Mishimoto kit keeps every factory emissions part and carries CARB EO D-759-4. If the cooler itself is the problem, an aftermarket air-to-water core is the replacement. Mishimoto's bar-and-plate unit with cast end tanks is rated at 22% more flow under the same EO, and Pacific Performance Engineering (PPE) and SPE Motorsport offer their own intercoolers. On the hot side, pipes from S&B, SPE, PPE, Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab) and aFe replace the turbo-to-cooler tube, and the aFe Bladerunner hot and cold side kit covers both tubes in one box. For any part without an EO number listed, confirm its status before installing on a truck that has to pass a California or emissions inspection.

Fitment notes
Many pipes here are labeled SO, for standard output, and most list fitment from 2017 into later years; read each listing's year range. The Mishimoto intercooler is listed for 2017-2023, the aFe Bladerunner pipes for 2017-2022, and some SPE and PPE parts reach back to 2011. Mishimoto's CARB EO D-759-4 lists 2017-2018, so a 2019 truck in California needs that EO confirmed before install. Chassis cabs use a ball-bearing Garrett GT3582V turbo and a 330 hp calibration, so confirm fitment on F-350, F-450 and F-550 cab-and-chassis trucks. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my 6.7L lose boost with a loud hiss and go into limp mode?
On a 2017-2019 truck, the factory plastic cold-side intercooler pipe is a known cause. It can break with no warning, and towing and tuned trucks see it more. Replace it with an aluminum pipe and silicone boots so it does not happen again.
How can I tell if the air-to-water intercooler is leaking?
An internal leak puts coolant into the intake. You will see coolant loss, white steam, or coolant in the cold-side pipe. The cooler runs on the secondary coolant loop, which is separate from the engine's primary loop, so keep that in mind when you trace where the coolant is going.
Is an aluminum intercooler pipe legal on my truck?
The Mishimoto aluminum cold-side pipe kit keeps every factory emissions part and carries CARB EO D-759-4, but that EO lists 2017-2018. A 2019 truck that has to meet California rules needs the EO confirmed first. For other brands, check the product page for an EO number.
What is the difference between the hot side and the cold side?
The hot side is the short tube that carries boost from the turbo to the charge air cooler. The cold side carries cooled air from the charge air cooler to the intake manifold, and on this truck the factory cold-side pipe is plastic. That plastic pipe is the documented weak point, so start there.
