Call or Text (352) 722-5295Air intake on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The fifth-generation Ram 2500 and 3500 got an all-new 6.7L Cummins for 2019. Outside air comes in through functional hood scoops and a front airbox with a factory ram-air scoop, passes a panel filter, and runs through an S-shaped plastic snorkel to the Holset HE300VG variable-geometry turbo. Compressed air leaves through a 2.70-in hot-side tube with crush-bent corners, crosses the front-mount intercooler, and comes back through a 3.15-in composite cold-side tube (Mopar 52014735AB). From there it enters the cast intake elbow, or horn, which holds the grid heater, and then the intake manifold. Ram fed the 2019 truck the largest intercooler it had put on these pickups to that point, behind a bumper with bigger openings. On Banks' flow bench the stock elbow moved 38.6 lb/min, the tightest spot in the whole charge path.
What fails and why
Underboost is the big one. Ram TSB 09-003-26 covers code P0299 on 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.7L (sales codes ETL and ETM). The repair is a PCM update, the wiTECH Air Handling Test on 2023-2024 trucks, and a new air filter, Mopar 68645327AA. Symptoms are reduced power and slow spool, and it can show up at any mileage after a filter change.
Next is the charge path. Boost-tube couplers, clamps and the plastic cold-side tube are the wear and leak items, and intercooler leaks show up in owner complaints on 2020 3500s alongside DPF and EGR faults. A boost leak can bring the same P0299 plus more frequent regens. A filter that doesn't seal can pass dust to the turbo, and chipped compressor fins are a common reason a used turbo ends up scrapped. The grid heater bolt that loosens and drops into the manifold is mostly a 2007.5-2018 problem and very rare on 2019+, but it's worth a look whenever the elbow is off. On 2021-2023 trucks, make sure the grid heater relay recall (23V-060, FCA 13A) has been done.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck is stock and you just want it to run right, stay close to factory: the correct filter, fresh couplers and clamps, an OEM-style intercooler if the core leaks, and new gaskets any time the intake comes apart. If you want more airflow, the upgrades go after the restrictions Ram left in place.
- Intake: the Banks Ram-Air 42279 replaces the S-shaped snorkel with a straight connection, keeps the factory ram-air scoop, and carries CARB EO D-161-174.
- Elbow: the Banks Monster-Ram 42799 swaps the cast grid-heater elbow for a high-flow plate with a 750 W coil heater. Banks measured 72.7 lb/min against stock's 38.6 and lists it under EO D-161-170.
- Boost tubes: Banks 26006 steps both sides to 3.5 in, with 68% more hot-side flow area and 24% more on the cold side, and works with either the stock elbow or the Monster-Ram.
The 2021-2024 high-output engine got its extra power partly from higher turbo boost limits, so charge-air cooling matters more on those trucks.
What we carry
Intakes from Banks Power, S&B, AFE and Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab): the Banks Ram-Air, the S&B 75-5132 cold air intake, the AFE Pro Dry S Momentum HD, and WCFab's Stage 1 and Stage 2 high-flow bundle kits and 5-in intake with air box. Elbow and grid heater upgrades from Banks (Monster-Ram 42799 for pickups, 42805 for chassis cab), the BD Diesel Killer Grid Heater kit, and the S&B 76-1012 intake elbow. Intercoolers and piping from CSF (6101 OEM+ replacement intercooler), Mishimoto (intercooler and pipe kit, factory-fit boot kit), PPE (hot and cold side pipe kit, silicone couplers), WCFab pipe kits and reducer boots, and the Banks 26006 boost tubes. Filters, a filter wrap and a cleaning and oil kit from S&B, Banks and WCFab. Gaskets and head sets from MAHLE, a Cummins genuine IAT sensor, a PPE MAP sensor relocation spacer, and BD Diesel positive air shutdowns, including the E-PAS emergency engine shutdown.
Fitment notes
This collection is for the 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins, sold in trims from Tradesman and Big Horn to Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited. The Power Wagon was gas only, so it isn't covered. Chassis-cab 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks share the engine family, but some parts are specific: Banks makes a separate Monster-Ram (42805) for chassis cab. The 2025 refresh moved to glow plugs and a new intake manifold, so don't assume anything here carries over to 2025+. Know whether you have the standard-output engine (2500 and 3500) or the high-output engine (3500 pickup only), and verify by VIN with the fitment checker on each product page. Emissions listings are on each product page; the Banks intake, elbow and boost tubes above are listed 50-state compliant.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 2019+ Cummins set P0299 after an air filter change?
Ram TSB 09-003-26 covers P0299 underboost on these trucks, and the 2019+ engine computer is very sensitive to filter restriction. The bulletin's repair includes a PCM update and a new Mopar 68645327AA filter. If the code shows up after a filter change, confirm the filter first, then check the couplers and clamps for a boost leak.
What is the most restrictive part of the stock intake?
The cast intake elbow that holds the grid heater. Banks measured it at 38.6 lb/min, against 72.7 lb/min for its Monster-Ram elbow with coil heater, an 88.3% gain. The Monster-Ram reuses the stock mounting points and is listed 50-state compliant.
Do I have to change the elbow to run bigger boost tubes?
No. The Banks 26006 tubes work with either the stock elbow or the Monster-Ram, so you can do them in either order. Stock tubes are 2.70 in on the hot side and 3.15 in plastic on the cold side; the Banks kit steps both to 3.5 in.
Will these intake parts fit a 2025 Ram?
Don't assume it. For 2025 Ram replaced the grid heater with glow plugs and changed the intake manifold. This collection is built around 2019-2024 trucks, so check each listing and verify by VIN.
How often should I replace the air filter?
Diesel Hub lists 30,000 miles or 24 months, sooner in dusty conditions. On the factory airbox, Ram's bulletin names Mopar 68645327AA. With an aftermarket intake, use the replacement element made for that intake, and make sure it seals.
