Call or Text (352) 722-5295The intake horn on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins
After the turbo on the 6.7L Cummins, charge air passes through the front-mount intercooler and returns through a 3.15-in composite cold-side tube. That tube feeds the intake horn, a cast elbow mounted on the intake manifold with the grid heater inside it. Together the factory elbow and grid-heater plate are the main restriction in the charge path. The 2019+ engine computer is also very sensitive to restriction on the filter side, so the whole path matters. For the 2021-2024 high-output 3500, Ram raised the turbo's boost limits, along with fuel flow, to reach 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft, which pushes more air through the horn.
What fails and why
The horn itself is more of a bottleneck than a failure part. The trouble spots are around it. The coupler and clamp joining the cold-side tube to the horn belong to the set of charge-path joints that wear and leak on this truck, along with the plastic cold-side tube itself, and a leak there can set underboost code P0299. Inside the horn, the grid heater bolt is worth checking whenever it's off. Its habit of loosening and dropping into the manifold belongs mostly to 2007.5-2018 engines and is very rare on 2019+, but missing it can cost you the number 6 cylinder. When the horn goes back on, use fresh gaskets.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock truck, reseal what's there: MAHLE's throttle valve gasket and intake manifold gasket set are listed for this engine. For more airflow, the upgrade is the horn. The Banks Monster-Ram flows 72.7 lb/min against stock's 38.6, an 88.3% increase, using a cast high-flow plate and a 750 W coil heater in place of the factory grid. It reuses the stock mounting points and carries CARB EO D-161-170 as a 50-state compliant part. The S&B 76-1012 intake elbow is another replacement horn for 2019-2024 trucks. WCFab's Stage 2 high-flow intake bundle kit packages intake-side parts together for owners doing the whole path at once. Banks' 3.5-in boost tubes, in our intercooler and piping collection, work with either the stock horn or the Monster-Ram, so the order you do them in is up to you.
What we carry
Banks Power Monster-Ram intake and grid heater upgrades: 42799 for 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 42805 for 2019-2024 chassis cab. S&B 76-1012 intake elbow. BD Diesel 1041520 Killer Grid Heater Upgrade Kit. Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab) WCF100331 Stage 2 high-flow intake bundle kit. MAHLE G33078 throttle valve gasket and MS20647 intake manifold gasket set.
Fitment notes
Pickup and chassis cab use different Monster-Ram part numbers; the 42805 is the chassis-cab version. The MAHLE throttle valve gasket and BD grid heater kit are listed across 2007.5-2024 6.7L engines, while the MAHLE intake manifold gasket set, S&B elbow and WCFab kit are listed for 2019-2024. Ram changed the intake manifold for 2025 and dropped the grid heater for glow plugs, so a 2019-2024 horn should not be assumed to fit a 2025+. Check each product page for its emissions listing, and verify by VIN with the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Monster-Ram outflow the stock horn?
Banks measured 72.7 lb/min for the Monster-Ram with its coil heater, against 38.6 lb/min for the stock elbow with grid heater, an 88.3% increase. On this engine the stock elbow is the most restrictive part of the charge path.
Do I give up the grid heater with an aftermarket horn?
Not with the Monster-Ram. It replaces the factory grid with a 750 W coil heater, upgradable with Banks' billet heaters, so you keep a cold-start aid. For any other elbow, read the listing to see what heater it uses before you order.
Is there a separate horn for the chassis cab?
Yes. Banks lists the Monster-Ram 42805 for 2019-2024 Ram chassis cab and the 42799 for 2500 and 3500 pickups. Order by truck type, then verify by VIN.
