Component shopping gets easier once you know what GM put there. The front is independent, sprung by torsion bars through upper and lower control arms. The rear is a semi-elliptical multileaf pack, two-stage on a Sierra 2500HD and three-stage on a 3500HD. Factory shocks were 35 mm twin-tube on the 2500HD and 46 mm monotube on the 3500HD, and the front stabilizer bar measured 36 mm or 34 mm depending on which truck you have. Z71 Off-Road trucks came with 36 mm twin-tube gas shocks, jounce bumpers and skid plates. Control arms, ball joints, shocks, sway bar links, torsion keys and cab mounts are the categories owners replace on this chassis, and every one of them belongs to the 2001-2010 Duramax HD group.
What fails and why
A Sierra that has been leveled is the first case. Raising the front with cranked bars or taller keys changes the geometry, and the ball joints, tie rods, idler and pitman arms go faster afterward; the owner hears a clunk and chases tire wear. The second case is a loaded rear end. The two-stage pack under a 2500HD sags with a fifth-wheel pin or a camper in the bed, the truck noses up and feels loose, and helper springs or bags are the normal fix. Worn shocks are the third, and they are the easiest to miss, because the truck gets worse slowly.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Buy for ride height and duty. Stock height and no trailer: a direct-fit twin-tube is all you need. Leveled or lifted: use a shock built for that height, not a stock-length one. Towing heavy: a monotube or remote-reservoir shock handles the heat better. Carrying weight on and off: air helper springs, with a compressor and controller if you would rather not fill them by hand. Making power or working off pavement: traction bars to control axle wrap, stronger sway bar end links, and a bump stop kit to protect the lower control arm at full compression.
What we carry
Air spring hardware comes from Air Lift: LoadLifter 5000 and 5000 Ultimate Plus kits, stainless steel upgrades, spacers in two, four and six inch heights plus angled versions, a universal cradle, air hose, replacement on-board compressors, WirelessOne and WirelessAIR tanks with EZ mounts and load controllers. Shocks are Bilstein B6 4600, B8 5100, B8 5160 and remote-reservoir units, sold by position and drivetrain. Traction bars come from Wehrli Custom Fabrication in 60-inch and 68-inch lengths with brackets, hardware and replacement bushings and heims, and from BDS Suspension in fixed and Recoil form with a mounting kit. BDS also lists an upper control arm kit and a front skid plate for 4-6 inch BDS lifts. Merchant Automotive has the off-road lower control arm bump stop kit and BD Diesel the upgraded sway bar end links.
Fitment notes
Nothing here crosses into 2011, because that refresh brought a new frame, new control arms, new torsion bars and new leaf springs. Sierra 3500HD trucks were built with single or dual rear wheels and the rear parts differ. Kits listed for a Sierra 1500 are not HD parts. If the truck already sits higher than stock, air spring kits need spacers to reach. Verify by VIN, or use the fitment checker on the product page and we will confirm by phone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell a two-stage rear pack from a three-stage?
Go by the truck: Sierra 2500HD trucks use the two-stage pack and 3500HD trucks the three-stage, with different shocks and stabilizer bars. If you are not sure which you own, send us the VIN and we will read it.
Is a B8 5100 a drop-in on a stock Sierra 2500HD?
It is built for leveled and lifted ride heights. On a truck still at factory height, the B6 4600 is the matching replacement. Both are listed here by front or rear position and by drivetrain.
Can I add traction bars without a lift?
Yes. Traction bars tie the axle to the frame to control leaf spring wrap, and they work on a stock-height truck. The bracket and hardware install kits are listed separately from the bars themselves, so order both.
