Call or Text (352) 722-5295Differentials on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Up front, 4x4 F-250 and F-350 trucks run a Dana 60 with a 9.75-inch ring gear, filled with 2.7 to 2.9 quarts of 80W-90. Two-wheel-drive trucks have Twin-I-Beam front suspension and no front differential at all. In the rear, the axle depends on model and GVWR, and so does the gearing. Diesel ratios behind the 6.7L Powerstroke were 3.31 or 3.55 on single-rear-wheel trucks, 3.55 or 4.10 on the F-350 dually, and 4.30 on the F-450 pickup. Ford offered limited-slip and electronic-locking rear differentials by model, so two trucks with the same ratio can still have different hardware inside the housing.
What fails and why
Differentials on this generation do not have a documented chronic failure pattern. Ford strengthened the axles for 2017, and service is driven by the fluid interval: the rear at 100,000 miles normal or 50,000 severe, the front at 150,000 normal or 50,000 severe. Limited-slip rears take Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier with the gear oil at each change. Whine or seepage around a cover gets diagnosed one truck at a time. The rule that does not bend: if the axle has been submerged, replace the fluid immediately.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the factory cover is straight and dry, a fluid change with the right grade and a new gasket is a complete service, and the MAHLE P32716 and P38155TC gaskets are listed here for that job. Owners who want more move to an aftermarket cover. PPE builds its covers from heavy-duty cast aluminum, AFE splits its line into Street Series and Pro Series, and Mag-Hytec, SPE Motorsport and BD Diesel all offer covers for the Ford axle patterns. For traction, Ford's factory electronic locker can be retrofit with Ford parts where the axle supports it, and the SPE Motorsport Full Lock Differential Kit is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks.
What we carry
- PPE heavy-duty cast aluminum covers for the Dana M300 and M275 14-bolt rears, the Sterling 10.25/10.5 12-bolt rear and the Dana 50/60 10-bolt front
- AFE Street Series and Pro Series front and rear covers
- Mag-Hytec, SPE Motorsport and BD Diesel covers, plus the SPE Full Lock Differential Kit
- MAHLE cover gaskets and an ATS Diesel Performance drain plug for ATS pans and covers
- Gear oil from Hot Shot's Secret (ADRENALINE and Blue Diamond), Lucas Oil and Royal Purple, plus Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier
Fitment notes
Read the axle tag or door-jamb axle code before ordering. The Dana M275 and M300 both show up as 14-bolt rears in the cover listings here, but they take different covers and different fluid volumes. Check SRW versus DRW on every cover listing, since some are single-rear-wheel only. The F-450's wide-track front axle does not share shafts or hubs with the narrow-track F-250/F-350 axle. And if you are shopping for a dually, the Dana 80 left the F-350 after 2016.
Frequently asked questions
Can I identify my rear axle by counting cover bolts?
Partly. The covers in this collection are listed as 12-bolt for the Sterling 10.25/10.5 and 14-bolt for the Dana M275 and M300, so a 12-bolt cover points to the Sterling. The M275 and M300 share the 14-bolt count, so the axle tag or door-jamb code has to settle it.
Which axles need Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier?
Ford calls for XL-3 in limited-slip units. On these trucks that covers the 3.55 limited-slip offered on SRW 4x4s, the 3.55 and 4.10 limited-slip options on the F-350 dually and the F-450's 4.30 limited-slip. XL-3 is in this collection.
What rear ratio does my truck have?
Diesel trucks were built with 3.31 or 3.55 on SRW models, 3.55 or 4.10 on the F-350 DRW and 4.30 on the F-450. The axle tag or door-jamb code shows yours. The ratio matters when you order gears or a locker; covers and fluid are chosen by the axle model.
Do these parts fit 2020 and newer Super Duty trucks?
Some do. Many covers here are catalogued from 2017 into later model years, and some gaskets span several Powerstroke generations. Check the years on each product page and use the fitment checker before you order for a newer truck.
