2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Differential Fluid

Gear oil and friction modifier for the front and rear differentials on 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke. The grade depends on the axle: Ford's spec is 80W-90 for the front Dana 60, 75W-85 for the 2017-and-later Sterling 10.50 rear, and 75W-140 for the Dana M275 and M300 rears.

Differential fluid for the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Capacities are modest, so buy for the top of your axle's range. The front Dana 60 on 4x4 trucks holds 2.7 to 2.9 quarts. In the rear, the Sterling 10.50 holds 3.3 to 3.6 quarts, the Dana M275 3.6 to 3.8 and the Dana M300 3.8 to 4.5. Limited-slip rears also get Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier. Ford's interval is 150,000 miles normal or 50,000 severe for the front, and 100,000 normal or 50,000 severe for the rear. If an axle has been under water, change the fluid right away. No chronic rear-axle failure is documented on the 6.7L Powerstroke Super Duty of this era, so clean fluid on schedule is most of the job.

Choosing a grade

Match the viscosity first, then pick the brand. Lucas Oil Heavy Duty 80W-90 matches the front Dana 60 spec. Lucas Oil Synthetic 75W-140 and Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W-140 match the Dana M275 and M300 spec. Ford lists 75W-85 for the 2017-and-later Sterling 10.50, so check the product page and your owner's manual before putting a different grade in that axle, or call us and we will help you pick.

Frequently asked questions

How much gear oil does my rear axle take?

Sterling 10.50: 3.3 to 3.6 quarts. Dana M275: 3.6 to 3.8 quarts. Dana M300: 3.8 to 4.5 quarts. All three were used on 2017-2019 trucks, so read the axle tag before you buy.

Does the front axle take the same oil as the rear?

No. The front Dana 60 on 4x4 trucks takes 80W-90 at 2.7 to 2.9 quarts, while the rear takes 75W-85 or 75W-140 depending on the axle. Two-wheel-drive trucks have Twin-I-Beam front suspension and no front differential to fill.

When do I add Motorcraft XL-3?

Ford calls for it in limited-slip axles, added with the gear oil at each change. On these trucks that includes the 3.55 limited-slip on SRW 4x4s, the limited-slip options on the F-350 dually and the F-450's 4.30 limited-slip.
