Call or Text (352) 722-5295Transmission parts for the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 6R140 is the only transmission Ford put behind the 6.7L Powerstroke in 2015-2016. It holds 17.4 to 18.5 quarts, takes the Motorcraft FT-187 filter and the BC3Z-7A191-B pan gasket, and its converter can lock up as low as 900 rpm. Its oil cooler sits on the secondary cooling loop rather than the engine's primary loop. Those details decide which parts you reach for on a service and which ones belong on a towing or power build.
Sorting parts by the job
Start with the reason the truck is on the lift.
- Routine service: fluid, a filter service kit and a pan gasket. Ford's interval is 150,000 miles normal and 50,000 miles severe, and towing trucks belong on the severe schedule.
- Towing: auxiliary coolers, an electric cooler fan and deep or cast-aluminum pans.
- Added power: billet flex plates, a billet intermediate shaft, interlocking pressure plate kits and an aftermarket torque converter. If you tune, the documented compliant approach is an in-line tuner that manages line pressure and shift strategy.
- Controls and repair: pressure controllers, a pressure enhancer solenoid, a solenoid body, a line kit and a wiring pigtail.
What we carry
BD Diesel supplies the Proforce 4D 6R140 torque converter, interlocking pressure plate kits, a filter service kit, a billet flex plate, Xtruded auxiliary and double-stacked coolers, an electric cooler fan, and the 6R140 pressure controller and pressure enhancer solenoid. Mishimoto brings a cast-aluminum 6R140 pan, the MMTC-F2D-11SL direct-fit cooler and a range of universal coolers. ATS Diesel Performance has a billet intermediate shaft, a billet flexplate and the Co-Pilot Tow Edition. SPE Motorsport covers a solenoid body, a transmission line kit, a rear cover and a deep pan. You will also find XDP flex plates and a bolt kit, a PPE heavy-duty deep pan, a Mag-Hytec pan, MAHLE pan and transfer case gaskets, an Alliant Power pigtail, and fluid from Motorcraft, Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil.
Fitment notes
Most parts here are listed for 2011-2019, which matches the 6R140's run behind the 6.7L. A few are narrower: the Mishimoto MMTC-F2D-11SL cooler and the BD Diesel full interlocking pressure plate kit are listed for 2011-2016. The MAHLE transfer case gasket is for 4x4 trucks, and the transfer case takes its own 1.9 to 2.0 quart fill. Fluid spec needs a check too, since original documentation calls for MERCON LV and some current schedules list MERCON ULV. Verify by VIN when a listing and your truck don't line up.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need for a basic 6R140 fluid and filter service?
The FT-187 filter, the BC3Z-7A191-B pan gasket and 17.4 to 18.5 quarts of fluid in the spec your owner's manual lists. The BD Diesel filter service kit and the MAHLE 6R140 pan gasket on this page are made for that job. Towing trucks should follow the 50,000-mile severe interval.
Where does the transmission cooler sit on the 2015-2016 6.7L?
On the secondary cooling loop, the low-temperature circuit that also serves the charge-air cooler and fuel cooler. That holds for 2011-2019 trucks; Ford moved it to the primary loop in 2020. Auxiliary coolers from BD Diesel and Mishimoto add cooling capacity on top of the factory setup.
Do I need build parts if my truck is stock?
Usually not. There is no widespread hard-part failure pattern on record for the 2015-2016 6R140; the documented issues are software campaigns. Build parts like billet flex plates and pressure plate kits make sense once you add compliant tuning or tow heavy on a regular basis.
