The 6R140 converter on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Every 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke pickup uses the TorqShift 6R140 six-speed automatic; Ford offered no other transmission. It has SelectShift, tow/haul and a diesel-only PTO provision. First gear is 3.974 and sixth is a 0.674 overdrive, and converter lock-up works down to 900 rpm. These years pair the 6R140 with the 440 hp / 860 lb-ft engine calibration.

Choosing a converter

The sources we work from do not show a widespread hard-part failure on the 2015-2016 6R140; the documented issues are software campaigns. So a converter is usually a planned purchase, made during a transmission rebuild or by an owner who tows heavy and wants a converter built for that work. Read each product page for the use and power level the converter is designed around.

What we carry

The BD Diesel 1030238 Proforce 4D 6R140 torque converter and the ATS Diesel Performance Five Star performance torque converter. Each lists 2011-2019 6.7L fitment, which covers 2015-2016.

Fitment notes

The 2011-2019 6R140 family spans two engine calibrations: 400 hp / 800 lb-ft on 2011-2014 and 440 hp / 860 lb-ft on 2015-2016. Verify by VIN, and refill with the fluid your owner's manual calls for, because sources disagree between MERCON LV and MERCON ULV. Capacity is 17.4 to 18.5 quarts with an FT-187 filter.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 2011-2019 converter fit my 2015-2016 truck?

The converters here list 2011-2019 6.7L fitment for the 6R140, which includes 2015-2016. Confirm by VIN or with the fitment checker before you order.

Is there a known converter problem on these years?

Not one the sources document. The known 6R140 issues on 2015-2016 trucks are software campaigns, such as recall 14V204 for 2015 trucks built September 13, 2013 through March 28, 2014, which fixed a momentary Reverse engagement on a Park-to-Drive shift with a dealer software update.
