2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Air Intake Parts

This is the air intake section for the 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke: intakes, filters, intercoolers, charge pipes, boots, sensors and gaskets. The one thing every owner of this truck should know is that the factory cold-side intercooler pipe is plastic, and it is this platform's best-known boost leak.

Air intake on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Ford's in-house 6.7L Powerstroke uses reverse-flow aluminum heads. The intake ports sit on the outboard side of each head, and the turbo lives in the engine valley. Air comes in through a fender-fed airbox that holds a pre-filter and a main element, then feeds the Garrett GT32 SST. That turbo is a single-sequential unit with one double-sided compressor wheel, and it draws air through two compressor inlets, one conventional and one upper inlet. Compressed air leaves through the hot-side pipe to the intercooler, comes back through the cold-side pipe to the throttle valve, and enters the upper and lower intake plenums. The intercooler is not a plain air-to-air core. It is a liquid-cooled charge air cooler on the secondary coolant loop, so intercooler parts on this truck include coolant fittings, not just air boots. After Ford's early recalibration, 2011-2014 pickups are rated at 400 hp and 800 lb-ft, and all of that depends on a sealed charge air path.

What fails and why

The big one is the cold-side intercooler pipe. On 2011-2016 trucks the factory pipe is plastic, and it can crack, split or blow apart under boost and heat cycling, often with no warning. When it goes you get sudden power loss, a hiss, limp mode and an underboost code like P0299. Smaller leaks are sneakier. A torn boot, a tired coupler or a leaking intercooler seal costs power without setting a code and raises exhaust temperatures. A smoke test finds it, and an oily film at the joint usually marks the spot. That oil is crankcase ventilation mist. It collects in the charge pipes and intercooler over the 30,000 to 50,000 miles between CCV services and cuts the intercooler's heat transfer. At high mileage, the air-to-water intercooler can also leak internally and let secondary coolant into the intake tract. Watch for secondary coolant loss, white smoke and coolant residue in the charge pipes.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For filters, the factory parts are a Motorcraft FA-1909 pre-filter and FA-1902 element. Inspect them at every oil change and replace as needed, about 45,000 miles in normal service. For the cold-side pipe, putting in another plastic pipe puts you back where you started. Reinforced silicone or aluminum pipe kits with bead-rolled ends and T-bolt clamps are direct replacements for the factory pipe and need no tuning. If you want more airflow after that, an enclosed cold air intake is the next step. The S&B 75-5104 for 2011-2016 F-250 and F-350 tests at 31.70% less restriction than stock with 99.26-99.66% filtration. It comes with a MAF plate and gasket so it does not set a check-engine light, and it carries CARB EO D-590-13. Banks Power's Ram-Air 42215 is also listed for 2011-2016 Super Duty 6.7L trucks. The order we recommend: seal the cold-side pipe and boots first, then add the intake.

What we carry

This collection covers the whole charge air path. Intakes come from S&B (the 75-5104 cold air intake and 75-6000 open air intake), Banks Power, No Limit Fabrication and SPE Motorsport. Hot-side and cold-side pipes come from Mishimoto, PPE, S&B, SPE Motorsport, XDP and BD Diesel, and No Limit adds turbo discharge boots and a hot-side boot kit. For the intercooler itself, there are Mishimoto and PPE air-to-water intercooler kits and the SPE Booklung billet intercooler. S&B supplies replacement elements, filter wraps and the Precision II cleaning and oil kit, with more filters from MAHLE, SPE and No Limit. Alliant Power and XDP cover MAF, MAP, ambient air temperature and charge air temperature sensors. MAHLE adds intake manifold and throttle body gaskets, and BD Diesel adds positive air shutdown valves. You can also shop the full Powerstroke catalog or browse all intakes.

Fitment notes

Pickups in this range are the F-250 and F-350 in single and dual rear wheel form plus the F-450 crew cab dually, in XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and, from 2013, Platinum trim. F-350, F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs use a different turbo and a 300 hp calibration, so confirm a part lists chassis cab fitment before ordering. Year splits matter too. Because the 2011-2014 GT32 has twin inlets, some intake tubes and airbox parts split at 2015, when Ford moved to the GT37. If your 2011-2014 truck has had a later-style turbo installed, tell us before you order intake piping. S&B's CARB EO for the 75-5104 covers the F-250 and F-350 only; the F-450 and F-550 have no EO for that intake. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my 6.7L Powerstroke suddenly lose power and set P0299?

On a 2011-2014 truck, check the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe first. It can crack or blow apart under boost with no warning, and the result is a hiss, limp mode and an underboost code. If the pipe is intact, look for oily residue at the boots and couplers, which marks a leak.

Do I need a tune after replacing the cold-side intercooler pipe?

No. Reinforced silicone and aluminum cold-side pipe kits are direct replacements for the plastic factory pipe and do not need tuning. Fresh boots and T-bolt clamps at both ends are part of doing the job right.

Is there a CARB-legal cold air intake for the 2011-2014 6.7L?

Yes. The S&B 75-5104 carries CARB EO D-590-13 for 2011-2016 F-250 and F-350 trucks. That EO does not cover the F-450 or F-550, so call us first if you drive one of those.

Why is there coolant in my intercooler pipes?

The intercooler on this engine is an air-to-water unit on the secondary coolant loop. At high mileage it can leak internally and send secondary coolant into the intake, which shows up as secondary coolant loss, white smoke and residue in the charge pipes. The fix is a replacement intercooler, and this collection has air-to-water intercooler kits from Mishimoto and PPE.

How often should I change the air filter on a 2011-2014 6.7L?

The maintenance schedule calls for inspecting the FA-1909 pre-filter and FA-1902 element at every oil change and replacing them as needed, about 45,000 miles in normal service. The inspection is what tells you when, so do not skip it.
