Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins showed up mid-2007, but the chassis under it stayed the same. These are third-generation HD trucks, badged Dodge Ram, and most chassis parts span 2003-2009, with many running through 2013. Dodge kept live axles on the 2500 and 3500 for longevity and durability while the 1500 went independent. On the 4x4 the front is a solid axle on coil springs, located by a four-link and a single track bar, with leaf springs and overload leaves in back. From the factory the truck sits about 3 inches nose-low.
The 2WD trucks are different up front. They use an independent front end, so 4x4 lift kits, track bars and front shocks do not cross over. Read the drivetrain in every product title before you add it to the cart.
What fails and why
Death wobble is the headline problem on these trucks. It is a violent shake in the front end, usually set off by a bump, often with wander and a clunk from the track bar. Thuren Fabrication ranks the factory track bar as the primary cause on 1994-2013 Rams. The stock bar has rubber bushings and exaggerated bends, and it is the only lateral support for the steering assembly, so even small bushing deflection adds up. Putting new bushings in the stock bar does not cure it. On a lifted truck, Thuren puts the life of an OEM bar at roughly 20,000 miles.
Ball joints are the other documented early failure. Control arms, sway bar end links, shocks and hub bearings round out the wear list. Tires matter too: Thuren ranks tire choice third among wobble causes, so a shake that starts right after a tire change points there first.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck sits at stock height and you just want it to drive straight, start with the track bar. An adjustable or heavy-duty bar is the first part to buy for death wobble. Then look at shocks and end links, which are on the same wear list.
If you want to level or lift, know where the lines fall. Thuren's all-around setup is 3 inches up front and 3/4 to 1 inch in the rear. Up to 3 inches you need coils, shocks and a track bar, and the stock control arms are fine. Past 3 inches you need control arms, longer brake lines and possibly driveline work. Past 4 inches you need a drop pitman arm with aftermarket steering. For hauling and towing, the rear is where the work happens: long-travel leaf springs or overload changes for ride, and air bags for heavy towing.

Fitment notes
Suspension here is a chassis fitment, not an engine fitment, so many titles read 2003-2009 or 2003-2013. Check three things before you order: 2WD or 4WD, 2500 or 3500 (and single or dual rear wheels), and model year. The 2500 and 3500 rear spring packs differ, and Thuren advises measuring each truck because trim and options change the weight. BDS lists separate long-arm kits for 2008 and for 2009-and-later trucks, and some are 2500-only. The steering linkage changed from the Y-link to the T-style layout during 2008, which matters once a lift gets into steering parts. The 4500/5500 Chassis Cab is a different chassis, and most pickup parts do not interchange. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What causes death wobble on a 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 or 3500?
The factory track bar is the primary cause. Its rubber bushings and bent shape let the front axle move side to side, and that movement turns into a violent shake after a bump. Tire choice ranks third on Thuren's list, so a wobble that starts after new tires deserves a look there too.
Will new bushings in my stock track bar stop the wobble?
No. Replacing the bushings alone does not fix the OEM bar, because the bar itself flexes. The fix is an adjustable or heavy-duty track bar, like the BD Diesel 1032013-F in this collection. BD also sells the 16mm bushing sleeve for that kit when it needs service.
How much lift can I run on the stock control arms?
Up to 3 inches. At that height you need coils, shocks and a track bar, but the factory arms are adequate. Above 3 inches plan on control arms, longer brake lines and possibly driveline work, and above 4 inches a drop pitman arm with aftermarket steering.
Do these parts fit a 2WD truck?
For front-end parts, only the ones marked 2WD. The 2WD trucks use an independent front end, so 4x4 lift kits and track bars will not bolt on. The Daystar 2WD leveling kits and the Bilstein B6 4600 rear shock listed for 2003-2012 2WD trucks are examples of 2WD parts here.
Should I add air bags if I tow with my Ram?
Air bags are the usual rear upgrade for heavy towing on this truck. Air Lift LoadLifter helper spring kits work alongside the factory leaf springs, and you can add a compressor and controller to adjust them. For tow and payload limits, go by the door-jamb sticker and owner's manual for your exact truck.
