Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins
The 2003 model year brought an all-new third-generation Ram 2500 and 3500 with a new frame and suspension, but Dodge kept live axles front and rear on the heavy-duty trucks for longevity and durability. Up front, a solid axle rides on coil springs. Two upper and two lower control arms locate it fore and aft, and a single track bar holds it side to side. Out back, leaf springs with overload leaves carry the load. That track bar is the only part supporting the steering assembly, so any slop in its bushings shows up in your hands on the steering wheel. Whether your 5.9L Cummins Ram tows, hauls or just commutes, the front end is where it needs the most attention.
What fails and why
Most front-end complaints on these trucks trace back to a short list of parts:
- Track bar bushings. The factory bar uses two-piece rubber bushings that start breaking down early. A sixteenth of an inch of movement in a bushing compounds through every connection in the steering, and you feel it as wander, a steering wheel that sits off-center and a clunk on turn-in.
- Death wobble. Violent shaking of the front end at speed, usually set off by a bump, that does not stop until you slow down. Opposing caster forces drive it, and the rubber-bushed factory track bar is the main culprit. Even slight radial play is enough, and it can show up at any mileage.
- Steering damper. A tired damper lets small wobbles grow. Shimmy after bumps that takes a while to settle is the sign. It ranks second only to the track bar as a wobble contributor.
- Ball joints. No radial play is allowed, and only about 1/16 inch of axial play. Worn or seized, corroded joints add steering friction, causing wander, poor return to center and uneven tire wear, mostly on high-mileage trucks and trucks on heavier tires.
- Rear sag. The factory leaf packs sag under a load or a trailer. The nose sits high, the headlights aim up and steering feel suffers with a trailer behind you.
To check the track bar, park on asphalt with the engine running and have a helper swing the steering wheel back and forth about 90 degrees while you watch both ends of the bar. Any visible bushing deflection is a serious problem.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A factory-style replacement puts back exactly what was there, rubber bushings included. That is fine for parts the factory got right, but the suspension specialists who build these trucks call the track bar a mandatory upgrade because of its design. A heavy-duty adjustable track bar with a proper joint in place of rubber bushings is the first upgrade to make on any 2003-2004 Ram, with a quality steering damper next to control the caster forces the bar leaves behind.
If you want more height, about 3 inches up front with 3/4 to 1 inch in the rear is the best all-around setup, and the stock control arms handle it. Stock shocks do not have the range of travel once the truck is lifted, so plan on longer shocks and longer sway-bar links. Lifting the front also moves weight rearward and drops the rear about 1/2 inch, so plan both ends together. Past 3 inches, the control arms have to be replaced or adjusted and the track bar lengthened, but never beyond 39-1/8 inches center to center. For rear sag, air springs with an onboard compressor are the common route.
What we carry

Fitment notes
These trucks were sold as the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500, and our catalog files them under RAM. That covers Regular Cab and Quad Cab trucks, the single-rear-wheel 2500 and the 3500 in single or dual rear wheel form. Most front-end parts are cataloged as 2003-2013 2500 and 2003-2012 3500 fitments, which is why so many titles here show those year spans. Watch the drivetrain split: the Daystar leveling kits and several Bilstein shocks come in separate 2WD and 4WD versions, and every BDS lift kit here is a 4WD part. A few listings name only the 6.7L in the title, so run the fitment checker on the product page or verify by VIN before you order. After any lift or level, get an alignment: caster runs 3.2 to 4.8 degrees depending on year and model, total toe should be 0.00 to 0.05 degrees, and with a 2 to 3 inch lift the cam adjusters go vertical. Grease any greaseable joints with synthetic grease every 5,000 miles.
Frequently asked questions
What causes death wobble on a 2003-2004 Ram 2500 or 3500?
The main culprit is the factory track bar and its rubber bushings. Even slight radial play lets opposing caster forces build into violent front-end shaking after a bump. A worn steering damper lets small wobbles grow, and worn ball joints add to it. Start with the track bar, then look at the damper and ball joints.
How do I check my track bar at home?
With the truck on asphalt and the engine running, have a helper turn the steering wheel back and forth about 90 degrees while you watch both ends of the bar. If you can see the bushings deflect, the bar needs attention. Even 1/16 inch of movement compounds through the steering linkage.
How much lift can I run on the stock control arms?
Up to about 3 inches in front. Beyond that the control arms need to be replaced or adjusted and the track bar lengthened, with 39-1/8 inches center to center as the maximum safe length. Once the truck is lifted, longer shocks and sway-bar links are part of the job.
My Ram squats when I hook up a trailer. What helps?
Rear sag under load is a common concern on these trucks, with the nose sitting high and the headlights aimed up. Air springs with an onboard compressor are the common route for sag control, and Air Lift LoadLifter kits plus WirelessONE and WirelessAIR systems are in this collection. Your weight ratings still come from the label in the driver's door jamb.
Do I need an alignment after leveling or lifting?
Yes. Reset caster with the cam adjusters vertical for a 2 to 3 inch lift, and set total toe to 0.00 to 0.05 degrees. Caster specs run 3.2 to 4.8 degrees depending on year and model, so have the alignment shop use the exact spec for your truck.
